Some basic, and certainly valid, measures are net income, return on our investment portfolio and, of course, progress toward the $1.5 billion goal for Create the Future: The Wisconsin Campaign. We are pleased to report that thanks to your generosity, we have again posted a record year. You made 121,479 gifts totaling $457,288,098. This is an increase of 215 percent over 2003 and certainly a tribute to your commitment to the University. There is no doubt that we will reach and most likely surpass the campaign goal. Education for EMS and nursing will be offered, with presentations and hands-on sessions based on the educational need of the participant. Patients will be present when appropriate. Symposium Outcomes June 24th Outcomes Participants will: • Enhance their knowledge surrounding best practices for the emergent care of pediatric blunt trauma injuries. • Learn key elements of an effective mass casualty response program and strategies to address challenges that can occur during multi-agency responses at a large-scale incident. June 25th Outcomes Participants will: • Learn the newest strategies and techniques to care for patients in the pre-hospital and emergency settings. • Learn key assessments and interventions for suspected non-accidental trauma and human trafficking cases. • Enhance their knowledge of emergent/initial care for burn injuries. 1 “Trying to plan for the future without a sense of the past is like trying to plant cut flowers” --Daniel Boorstin, historian and Librarian of Congress The Wisconsin Idea: The Vision that Made Wisconsin Famous Introduction To the practitioners who comprise UW-Madison’s Community Partnerships and Outreach (CPO) Staff Network, the Wisconsin Idea is at the heart of their day-to-day work with communities in Wisconsin and beyond. But the original meaning of the Wisconsin Idea has faded over time, replaced by a generic public service mandate. (1) “The Boundaries of the University are the Boundaries of the State” The “Year of the Wisconsin Idea” offers us an opportunity to reflect on how the Wisconsin Idea guides our practice. We chose to explore the history of the emergence of the Wisconsin Idea in an attempt to renew and clarify our vision for why and how we engage with the public to address pressing issues. It turns out that the history of the University’s engagement with the State offers much more relevant guidance than we would have imagined. The values that drove the founders of the WI Idea—truth, self- governance, egalitarianism, integrity, trust and social capital—are the same values that represent effective, democratic partnerships today. It’s evident in our practice, and now it’s evident in our history as well, thanks to the work of Gwen Drury, Ph.D. student in Educational Policy and Leadership Analysis at UW-Madison. The rich history she details here brings us closer to our best practices—equitable, reciprocal engagement in which knowledge is co-created by the University and communities working together on issues that matter to all of us. -

Early Colonial Life
Early Colonial Life The 16th century was the age of mercantilism, an extremely competitive economic philosophy that pushed European nations to acquire as many colonies as they could. As a result, for the most part, the English colonies in North America were business ventures. They provided an outlet for England’s surplus population and more religious freedom than England did, but their primary purpose was to make money for their sponsors. The first English settlement in North America was established in 1587, when a group of colonists (91 men, 17 women and nine children) led by Sir Walter Raleigh settled on the island of Roanoke. Mysteriously, the Roanoke colony had vanished entirely. Historians still do not know what became of its inhabitants. In 1606, King James I divided the Atlantic seaboard in two, giving the southern half to the Virginia Company and the northern half to the Plymouth Company. In 1606, just a few months after James I issued its charter, the London Company sent 144 men to Virginia on three ships: the Godspeed, the Discovery and the Susan Constant. They reached the Chesapeake Bay in the spring of 1607 and headed about 60 miles up the James River, where they built a settlement they called Jamestown. The Jamestown colonists had a rough time of it: They were so busy looking for gold and other exportable resources that they could barely feed themselves. It was not until 1616, when Virginia’s settlers learned to grow tobacco and John Smith’s leadership helped the colony survive. The first African slaves arrived in Virginia in 1619. -

DANE COUNTY CULTURAL AFFAIRS COMMISSION 2012 Grant Advisory Panels Bios Arts in Education Brenda Baker is Director of Exhibits at Madison Children’s Museum, a visual artist and mother of two young boys. She has a B.A. in art from DePauw University and an M.F.A. in painting and sculpture from UW‐Madison and has received numerous awards for her work including NEA, Fulbright and DCCAC grants. John Beutel earned a BS and MS Degree in Choral Music Education from the University of Wisconsin‐ Platteville. He retired in 2001 after 35 years of teaching public school choral music. The last 26 years he was Choir Director at Stoughton High School. He continues his involvement in music by conducting the Stoughton Chamber Singers, the Stoughton Festival Choir and two church choirs at Christ Lutheran church. He is a member of the Stoughton Opera House Board of Directors, was a founding member of the Stoughton Arts Council, and currently teaches an adult course in Music Appreciation for any community members who love music and would like to learn more about it. John also has been an active member of the Wisconsin School Music Association (WSMA) having served on its Adult Education Committee, various Festival Music Selection Committees, and chairing the State Middle Level Honors Choir. He currently serves as an adjudicator for WSMA school music festivals and honors auditions at the district and state levels in Wisconsin and Michigan. Extensive travel and gardening are passions that offer non musical enrichment. Kimberly Foster Branch is a Certified MBTI Practitioner (Myers‐Briggs), who has taught pre‐school and elementary school in Australia, Los Angeles and New York City for over 15 years. -

LEO LEMAY XHROUGHOUTTHE seventeenth and most of the eighteenth centuries, the frontiersman was generally regarded as a shift- less outcast, a lout tending to criminality, a villain too lazy or too stupid or too vulgar to exist in society, and a traitor to the culture.1 Long before the concept ofthe frontiersman existed, men who adopted Indian customs were regarded with suspi- cion and fear by their white contemporaries. In Virginia in 1612, Sir Thomas Dale punished those who 'did Runne Away unto the Indjans' in 'A moste severe mannor.' 'Some he apointed to be hanged Some burned Some to be broken upon This paper in a slightly different form was read at the annual meeting ofthe American Antiquarian Society on October 19, 1977. • The only previous work I know that deals specifically with 'the emergence ofthe frontiersman as a heroic figure' is Jules Zanger, 'The Frontiersman in Popular Fiction, 1820-60,' in John F. McDermott, ed.. The Frontier Re-examined (Urbana: University of Illinois Press, 1967), pp. 141-53, where Zanger claims the heroic frontiersman emerged in response to ( 1 ) the popularity of Sir Walter Scott's Waverley novels; (2) 'the public acclaim won by Jackson's Kentucky rifleman at New Orleans'; (3) the pop- ular images of Daniel Boone and Davy Crockett; and (4) the character of Natty Bumppo in Cooper's Leatherstocking series of novels. All these influences, with the exception of the early fame of Daniel Boone, are later than eighteenth-century, the primary period that I am considering.
