Graça Machel

Graça Machel is a renowned international advocate for women’s and children’s rights. She has served as the first Education Minister of , and as past Chair of the GAVI Alliance board. Her contributions to the Africa Progress Panel and the United Nations Secretary-General’s Millennium Development Goals Advocacy Group have been widely appreciated. As a member of The Elders, she played a key role in establishing Girls Not Brides: The Global Partnership to End Child Marriage. Recently, she founded the Graça Machel Trust.

Graça Machel has been ranked among the top 100 women activists and campaigners (The Guardian, 2011) as well as the top 100 most influential people (TIME, 2010). She has also served as a member of the High Level Panel of Eminent Persons reporting to the UN Secretary-General on the post-2015 development agenda.

As PMNCH Board Chair, Graça Machel succeeded Dr Julio Frenk, Dean of the Harvard School of Public Health.

Currently serves as the Executive Director at the Baylor College of Medicine Children’s Foundation Malawi.He is an associate professor of clinical Paediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine , Houston, Texas and Adjunct Professor of Medicine , University of North Carolina. He did his undergraduate medical training at the University of Manchester in England and subsequently did his paediatric training at the University of Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children in Canada. Before heading Malawi’s first stand alone pediatrics HIV clinic, Dr. Kazembe was the chief of paediatrics at Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe,Malawi, the main referral hospital for the central region of Malawi. In addition to his roles in paediatric HIV care and research, he is involved in malaria research and control activities nationally and internationally and community maternal and child health research. He has previously served on the Technical Review Panel (TRP) of the Global Fund Against AIDS, Malaria and TB. He has also served on a number of WHO expert committees.

Professor Kishwar Azad Professor Kishwar Azad Project Director, Perinatal Care Project and Professor of Paediatrics,

Prof. Kishwar Azad, is the Project Director of BADAS-Perinatal Care Project (PCP), a collaborative programme between the Diabetic Association of Bangladesh (BADAS), UCL Institute of Global Health, and Women and Children First, UK. She is Prof. of Paediatrics, Ibrahim Medical College and Senior Hony. Consultant, Dept.of Paediatrics, BIRDEM Hospital. She founded the department of Paediatrics and Neonatology at BIRDEM. Her main interests include neonatal, child and maternal health, and childhood diabetes. She is involved in research aimed at creating low cost innovative solutions, primarily involving women’s groups, to improve neonatal , child, and maternal health. This multi country partnership is led by Prof. Anthony Costello and has created impressive impact in the areas of neonatal and maternal health in resource poor countries. Other research interests include epidemiology and aetiology of childhood diabetes in Bangladesh, and fetal origins of adult disease.

Dr. Azad has numerous publications on neonatal health, diabetes , health systems in peer reviewed journals. She is providing the lead in PCP for projects funded by DFID,UK , WHO, and European Commission and has led projects funded by Big Lottery, the Wellcome Trust, Saving Newborn Lives and the Higher Education Link Programme of the British Council. Prof. Azad is a member of several professional organisations and was President of Bangladesh Neonatal Forum. She lends her expertise to the development of strategies and guidelines on issues relating to child and maternal health and childhood and adolescent diabetes. Prof. Kishwar Azad was awarded Honorary Fellowship from the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health in June 2012. She was made Honorary Senior Research Associate, University College London, UK.

Dr Núria Casamitjana Director of Training and Education

Dr Núria Casamitjana Badia is Director of Training and Education at ISGlobal and Professor at the University of Barcelona. She holds a B.A. in Pharmacy and a Doctorate from the University of Barcelona, and a Master’s degree in Occupational Health from the University of Barcelona - University Pompeu Fabra. She has over 25 years of experience as professor and researcher in the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Barcelona; as a BA, MSc and PhD lecturer; and as a senior manager at the University of Barcelona. In 2006 she was responsible, together with Dr Pedro Alonso, for the creation of the Barcelona Centre for International Health Research (CRESIB). She held the post of Deputy Director of CRESIB from its creation until 2011. In 2010 she also contributed to the development of the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal). Dr Casamitjana has held key senior management positions at the University of Barcelona, including the vice- presidency and presidency of the Health Sciences Division, and post of University vice-chancellor between 2002 and 2005. She has undertaken numerous outreach activities in Spain, Latin America and Africa, promoting global health programmes within the scientific community, academia, and civil society. She has coordinated education and training programmes in global health as well as capacity strengthening activities, including Africa and Latin America. Currently, Dr Casamitjana is co-Director of the ISGlobal-University of Barcelona Master of Global Health programme and Coordinator of the International Health track Master of Clinical Research. She also coordinates the TransGlobal Health Erasmus Mundus Joint PhD Programme and the track on International Health of the Medicine PhD Programme at the University of Barcelona. She has also coordinated specialized courses, including child, maternal and reproductive health. She has served as President of tropEd, International Network for Education and Training in International Health, and as a member of the executive board of the European Academic Global Health Alliance (EAGHA) and the World Federation of Academic Institutions for Global Health (WFAIGH). She is also member of the Coimbra Group ACP Task Force for University Cooperation. Dr Casamitjana has been an evaluator for the “Agencia de gestió d’ajuts universitaris i de recerca” (AGAUR, the agency of the regional Government of Catalonia for university and research scholarships/grants) and more recently for WHO-TDR and EDCTP programmes.

Gogontlejang Phaladi Founder and Executive Director

Gogontlejang Phaladi is a philanthropist and development practitioner from Botswana. She is the Founder and Executive Director of a non profit making Non Governmental Organization (NGO) called the Gogontlejang Phaladi Pillar of Hope Organization (GPPHO) which is a member of the UNFPA African Youth and Adolescent Network (AfriYAN) and a member of the PMNCH Adolescent and Youth Constituency. GPPHO is an NGO that is mandated in community capacity building, human rights advocacy, promoting gender equality and doing humanitarian work. She is also a member of the continental advocacy network- African Youth and Adolescents Network (AfriYAN) on population and development, leading the demographic dividend thematic committee. Gogontlejang Phaladi is an African woman leader who is passionately about transforming lives and believes a world free of poverty, with equity and dignity is possible with more youth driving the development agenda as agents of change. She is a seasoned human and social development expert who has served as a member of the African Union High Level Advisory Group on Humanitarian Effectiveness in Africa, Botswana Presidential Task Team of Vision 2036, UNICEF Botswana Child Ambassador, a former Radio Presenter, currently a member of the WHO external advisory group on the Accelerated Action for the Health of Adolescents (AA-HA) Framework and a Motivational Speaker. She is also a trained SRHR, CSE and HIV and AIDS educator and campaign facilitator having done several campaigns aligned with UNFPA and UNESCO. She is currently pursuing her undergraduate studies in LLB (Bachelor of Law) and doing humanitarian work as well as development work consultancy. During her spare time, she mentors girls and women through an initiative dubbed #SIMI (She Is My Inspiration) and she enjoys farming.

John Borrazzo Bureau of Global Health

John Borrazzo is Chief of the Maternal and Child Health Division in the Bureau for Global Health at the U.S. Agency for International Development, which includes responsibilities for maternal, newborn and child health, as well as environmental health. He joined USAID in 1992 on a Science and Diplomacy Fellowship (1992-94) from the American Association for the Advancement of Science, working on toxic substance exposure and air pollution in Eastern Europe, Central Asia, and Egypt. From 1996 until his appointment as MCH Division Chief in January 2008, he was Environmental Health Team Leader, working in sub-Saharan Africa (Benin, Ethiopia, Madagascar), Asia (India, Indonesia), and Latin America and the Caribbean (Peru, Haiti). Dr. Borrazzo received Masters and Ph.D. degrees researching various issues in indoor air quality at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and he completed post-doctoral research at the Institute for Water, Soil, and Air Hygiene in Berlin, Germany. He also holds an undergraduate degree in physics from Harvard University.

Dr Nila F. Moeloek Minister of Health

Nila F Moeloek serves as the Special Envoy of the President of the Republic of Indonesia on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), a ministerial-level post which she has held since 2010. As part of this role, Dr Moeloek is also the Indonesian Sherpa for the Network of Global Leaders in various events dedicated to the initiatives to improve women’s and children’s heath in developing countries.

Dr Moeloek actively participates as a speaker, resource person or moderator in a wide range of scientific meetings and workshops. She has also authored or co-authored more than 150 scientific papers and five scientific books. Dr Moeloek also leads a number of high-profile organisations in Indonesia. Foremost among these are her positions as General Chairperson of the Indonesian Dharma Wanita (the largest women’s organisation in Indonesia whose members are comprised of the women and wives of civil servants throughout Indonesia), General Chairperson of the Indonesian Ophthalmologist Association, General Chairperson of the Indonesian Cancer Foundation, and Chairperson of Medical Research of Faculty of Medicine at the University of Indonesia.

Dr Moeloek earned her medical degree in opthamology from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Indonesia. After earning her position as a specialist consultant in ophthalmology in 1998, she devoted herself to pursuing her PhD in ophthalmology, and earned a cum laude degree in 2003. In 2007 she earned her full professorship at the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Indonesia.

Prof Isaac Adewole Federal Minister of Health

Professor Isaac Adewole, has been a Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, Nigeria since 1997. He is the Honourable Minister of Health, Federal Ministry of Health. He was the 11th Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Nigeria and the immediate past President of African Organisation for Research and Training in Cancer (AORTIC).

He was born in Ilesa on 05 May, 1954. The young Adewole attended Ogudu Methodist Primary School, Ilesa (1960- 61), Methodist School 1,Oke Ado, Ibadan 1962-63) and St Mathias Demostration School Akure (1964-65). He thereafter proceeded to Ilesa Grammar School from 1966 - 1972 where he obtained Grade I with Distinction in 1970 and the Higher School Certificate in 1972 in the same school where he made AAC in the three Science subjects he offered.

He enrolled as a National Award Scholar at the prestigious University of Ibadan in 1973 and obtained his MB BS degree from the University of Ibadan in 1978 with the Glaxo Allenbury prize for the best performance in Paediatrics. He joined the services of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology as a Senior House Officer in 1981 and underwent further medical training to become a Senior Registrar in the Department in 1984. He then travelled to the UK for a Research Fellowship in the Department of Medical Oncology at Charring Cross Hospital in London. Professor Adewole was appointed Lecturer I at the College of Medicine in the University of Ibadan in 1989. He was promoted Senior Lecturer in 1992 and Professor in 1997. He was Acting Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University from 1999-2000 and Dean of the Faculty of Clinical Sciences and Dentistry (2000 - 2002), before becoming Provost of the College of Medicine from 2002 to 2006. A fellow of the Academy of Science of Nigeria (FAS) since 2011, he was awarded a honorary doctorate of science from the University of Sunderland, United Kingdom in July 2015, for his outstanding academic achievement and worthy contribution to preventive medicine and cancer screening in Nigeria.

Professor Adewole had also served the University of Ibadan in many other administrative capacities. He was a member MacArthur Grant Implementation Committee; member of Senate; Chairman, University Campus Committee on AIDS; member, Committee on the Review of guidelines for Promotion of Academic Staff; Chair, Committee on Assessment of Academic Staff by Students, Project Director, UNFPA Assisted Programme on Sexual and Reproductive Health and HIV Prevention as well as a member of the Organizing Committee and

Chairman of the Medical sub-Committee of NUGA in 2002.

A progressive unionist, Prof. Adewole was Secretary General and President, Association of Resident Doctors, UCH Branch as well as Secretary-General and National President of the National Association of Resident Doctors of Nigeria (NARD) from1982-84. He was also Deputy Secretary General (1988-1990, and Secretary General, Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) from 1990-1992; Secretary General, Confederation of African Medical Associations and Societies (CAMAS) from 1997-2003, and Chairman, Nigerian Medical Association, Oyo State.

Professor Adewole was the Principal Investigator of the AIDS Prevention Initiative in Nigeria (APIN) at the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan and Co-Principal Investigator of the Medical Education Partnership Initiative in Nigeria (MEPIN). He was a former Chairman of the National Task Team on Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission (PMTCT) of HIV in Nigeria. He was also the country’s Principal Investigator for ‘Operation Stop Cervical Cancer’ in Nigeria. Professor Adewole holds memberships of many learned societies, including the Nigerian Medical Association, the Society of Gynaecology & Obstetrics of Nigeria, the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), International Gynaecologic Cancer Society (IGCS) and the International AIDS Society (IAS). The Society of Gynaecology and Obstetrics of Nigeria (SOGON), conferred on him the 2013 Distinguished Service Award for Excellence in Research. This was in recognition of his contribution in research to improvement in the health of Nigerian women

A leading advocate for nationwide access to cervical cancer prevention and control, Professor Adewole’s current research interests include evaluating novel ideas for promoting prevention of cervical cancer in developing countries, HPV variability in cervical cancer among African women and evaluating interaction between HIV and Cervical Cancer. He has published over 200 articles in peer-reviewed journals and books on Gynaecological oncology, Abortion, HIV/AIDS and Perinatal medicine. He was the Guttmacher Institute’s 2008 Bixby Leadership Fellow in Reproductive health and the current chair of the sub-Saharan African Cervical Cancer Working Group (CCWG). He served on the Governing Council of the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU), London, UK (2013-2015) and he was on the Ethics Board of the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), Lyon France. He is an adjunct Professor at Northwestern University, Chicago, Illinois, U.S.A.

As a Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adewole was driven by an evangelical passion to sustain the prime position of Nigeria’s premier University and transform it into one of Africa’s top 10 Universities.

Shortly before he completed his tenure as the Vice Chancellor, he was appointed Honourable Minister of Health, Federal Ministry of Health, Federal Republic of Nigeria on November 11 2015. The Federal Ministry of Health under his watch has developed one of the most ambitious health programme in Africa to achieve UNIVERSAL HEALTH COVERAGE using Primary Health Care as the fulcrum. The programme aims to provide 10,000 functional Primary Health Care facilities in Nigeria covering every political wards and this will provide access to basic essential health care to about 100 million Nigerians.

A widely travelled man, Prof Adewole is a Patron of the Boys Brigade, He is married with children and grandchildren.

Chandra Kishore Mishra joined the prestigious Indian Administrative Service (IAS) in 1981 and currently leads one of the largest public health programmes in the world in his capacity as Additional Secretary and

Mission Director, National Health Mission to Government of India.

In his 31 years of public service, C K Mishra has served as an administrator, policy-maker and public health strategist holding a wide range of assignments in the fields of Health, Education, Industry and Power.

Born in Patna, Bihar, C.K. Mishra earned his Bachelor’s Degree in History (Hons) from St. Stephens College, Delhi University. In addition to this, he has received a Post Graduate Diploma in Media Law at NALSAR, Hyderabad. He has also completed the course of Leadership from Australia and New Zealand School of Government (ANZSOG), Australia.

Frances Day-Stirk President Director of Learning, Research and Practice Development and International Office

Frances Day-Stirk is President of the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM), a non-governmental organisation and the voice of global midwifery. ICM represents over 250,000 midwives in 108 midwifery association member in 95 countries. Frances provides leadership of the organisation and together with the members of the ICM board she holds responsibility for the organisations governance, development, viability and achieving its mission.

Jamaican-born Frances received her professional midwifery education and qualifications in the United Kingdom having initially trained as a nurse. Her 30 years of midwifery experience span clinical practice, education, maternity service management and global midwifery. She has published on a wide range of topics and presented at conferences nationally and internationally.

She is a former member of the Executive Management Team of the Royal College of Midwives in the United Kingdom, with a remit for professional standards, policy education, research and international relations. She has been part of numerous committees and also chaired several of them.

Her professional interests include organisation of maternity services, women’s choice in place of birth, homebirth, promoting normality, new born care and global maternal and newborn health safe motherhood.

On a personal note she has three children who were all born at home and a grandson.

Health care professional associations (HCPA) International Federation of Gynaecology and Obstetrics (FIGO)

Professor C. N. Purandare President Elect FIGO and Dean Indian College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, Purandare Hospital

Professor C.N. Purandare at 63, is a dynamic leader who received training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in India and Ireland. A senior consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist at three leading hospitals in Mumbai, he is also the honorary consultant for the Mumbai Police and the Indian Armed Force. Currently, he is the Dean of The Indian College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and Emeritus Editor for the Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of India. He has been conferred the Fellowship (Honoris Causa) by the RCOG (Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists) of the U.K. in 2009, Fellowship (Honorary) by the RCPI (Royal College of Physicians of Ireland) in 2013 and Fellowship (Hon) by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists 2014. Dr. Purandare is an educator par excellence with 37 years of teaching experience in Medical Colleges in India and Ireland. Passionate about Medical education, he rose through the ranks to become Unit Head in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, a position that has given him a thorough knowledge of the policy issues and challenges in achieving academic excellence.

An astute administrator, he has shaped the growth trajectory of the Mumbai Obs/Gyn Society (the largest Obs/Gyn city based society in India) for 9 marathon years from 1995 onwards, having held several leadership positions including that of President in 2003. From leading a city based society he moved to the national scene when he was elected Secretary General of the Federation of Obstetric and Gynaecological Societies of India (FOGSI) for the years 2004-2008. He later rose to be President (2009-10). At FOGSI he was instrumental in giving the organisation an academic focus, pioneered various national development projects, created self-sustainable systems, and firmed-up financial policies. An asset to FOGSI Professor Purandare sourced funding and cemented national and international partnerships with the Health Department of the Government of India and State Governments, WHO, UNICEF, MacArthur Foundation, AMDD, IPAS, PSI and JHPIEGO. He has also established FIGO, AOFOG, SAFOG and RCOG sessions at annual conferences of FOGSI for better interactions between sister organizations. During his years at the helm he not only turned around the fortunes of FOGSI from a loss making organization of Rs. 2 million per year to an organization with a turnover of Rs. 50 million and profit of Rs. 20 million per year, but he was also instrumental in establishing a large corporate office for FOGSI in Mumbai.

Professor Purandare is a member of the Indian Council of Medical Research Core Committee and AOFOG Uro-gynaecology Committee. He has regularly taken time off to meet fellow doctors and enhance his knowledge through participation as a delegate and as a faculty member in national and international conferences including FIGO since 1985. He has represented India on FIGO Executive Board. He has more than 80 publications in peer reviewed Journals, has contributed chapters in 23 books and has authored books as Associate Editor for 3 books and Editor for 4 books. A recipient of “Book of the Year Award” from FOGSI for 3 years, he has to his credit over 500 presentations and 20 orations as a guest faculty member in national and international conferences. He has a special interest in Foetal Medicine and High Risk Pregnancy and was the first to perform foetal surgery in India. He has devised the Purandare's Modified Radical Hysterectomy Operation for Carcinoma of the Cervix and successfully performed over 250 such procedures with improved 5 years survival rate.

Owing to his campaign on “Saving Lives” conducted nationwide involving various grassroots programmes to reach out to the under-privileged by adopting villages in India. He provided leadership to the programmes of “maternal death reviews” and “maternal near miss programme” as part of FOGSI - FIGO - LOGIC B&MGF MNH Initiative, he is abreast with the ground realities and challenges faced by families in developing nations. He was elected to the Prestigious position of President Elect of FIGO in Rome in October 2012. His vast experience will allow him to shape FIGO’s initiatives and strategies on a larger scale.

Professor Purandare is married to Gita, who is an avid professional piano teacher. They have two children - their daughter Viveka is pursuing a career in economic policy and son Nikhil, is an obstetrician and Gynaecologist adding to the never ending list of Obs/Gyn practitioners in the family for 4 generations.

In the immediate future, Professor Purandare will dedicate his time in prioritizing “Reduction in Maternal Mortality” as an area of continued momentum and plans to build focus on “Population Stabilization” and “Prevention and early detection of genital cancer”. Professor Purandare will use his strengths of leadership and team building, forging partnerships, financial acumen, strong academic knowledge of Obs/Gyn and integrity as the 5 pillars to lead change and make FIGO to be truly recognized as the prime organization for uplifting women’s health globally.

As Executive Director of the White Ribbon Alliance, Betsy McCallon is responsible for setting the strategic direction of the organisation and developing plans, a dynamic team, and resources to deliver it. Betsy joined the White Ribbon Alliance in 2004 and has contributed to the growth of the Alliance from a loose network, to a driver for global attention and commitments to maternal health, to a focus on national advocacy and accountability. She was drawn to the White Ribbon Alliance because of its focus on local solutions to address issues of inequality and the huge potential for change.

Betsy has lived in sub-Saharan Africa and Central America and worked in more than 15 countries.

When she’s not working, Betsy spends much of her time outdoors – cycling, exploring the city, and watching soccer.

Flavia Bustreo Assistant Director General Family, Women's and Children's Health

Dr Flavia Bustreo was appointed Assistant Director-General for Family, Women's and Children's Health on 1 October 2010. At WHO, she served as Deputy Director and then Director of The Partnership for Maternal, Newborn & Child Health from 2006 to 2010. In 2004-2005, she served as Interim Deputy Director of the Child Survival Partnership.

Dr Bustreo's work has focused on policy development concerning child and maternal health, policy implementation and partnership-building with a wide range of stakeholders. In 2010, she led the development of the United Nations Global Strategy for Women’s and Children’s Health. In 2008, she contributed to the High Level Taskforce on International Innovative Financing for Health Systems and in 2005, to the UN Taskforce on Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) 4 & 5 to reduce maternal and child mortality.

Dr Bustreo has worked in several countries, including assignments for WHO country and regional offices in Bangladesh, Brazil, China, Egypt, India, Morocco, Peru, the Philippines, Senegal, Sudan and Uganda. She has also served at WHO’s EURO office in Copenhagen, headquarters in Geneva, at the World Bank and as a special advisor to the Norwegian Prime Minister's Initiative for MDGs 4 & 5. She has published numerous academic and popular articles in the field of public health, women's and children's health.

Dr Bustreo earned a degree in medicine with honours and a postgraduate qualification in rehabilitation medicine from Padua University, Italy, and later obtained a M.Sc. in Communicable Disease Epidemiology from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. She has worked as a clinician with children and adolescents with disabilities, and with NGOs working with refugees in the former Yugoslavia and Iraq. Dr Bustreo speaks English, French, Spanish, Portuguese and Italian and has studied Russian and Arabic. Dr Flavia Bustreo is one of two PMNCH Co-Chairs on the PMNCH Board.

Timothy G Evans Senior Director Health, Nutrition and Population Global Practice

Tim Evans is the Senior Director of Health, Nutrition and Population at the World Bank Group.

From 2010 to 2013, Tim was Dean of the James P. Grant School of Public Health at BRAC University in Dhaka, Bangladesh, and Senior Advisor to the BRAC Health Program. From 2003 to 2010, he was Assistant Director General at the World Health Organization (WHO). Prior to this, he served as Director of the Health Equity Theme at the Rockefeller Foundation. Earlier in his career he was an attending physician of internal medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston and was Assistant Professor in International Health Economics at the Harvard School of Public Health. He is a board member of a number of international health alliances.

Tim has been at the forefront of advancing global health equity and strengthening health systems delivery for more than 20 years. At WHO, he led the Commission on Social Determinants of Health and oversaw the production of the annual World Health Report. He has been a co-founder of many partnerships including the Global Alliance on Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI) as well as efforts to increase access to HIV treatment for mothers and innovative approaches to training community-based midwives in Bangladesh.

Tim received his Medical Degree from McMaster University in Canada and was a Research and internal Medicine Resident at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He earned a D.Phil. in Agricultural Economics from University of Oxford, where he was a Rhodes Scholar.

Jan-Willem Scheijgrond heads up a global network that is responsible for the relations with governments and related stakeholders to address societal challenges in particular in the area of health care transformations and energy efficient lighting. Jan-Willem is also responsible for the Philips relations with international organizations such as the United Nations, International Development Institutions, and internal NGOs. Jan-Willem is a member of the WEF Global Agenda Council on Sustainable Development. He joined Philips in 2009 as Senior Director as part of the Corporate Sustainability Office with responsibility for risk and reputation management.

Jan-Willem started his career at the United Nations Environment Program, where he developed best practices guides related to cleaner production for emerging markets. Subsequently, he held a number of sustainability and government related functions at the BLC Leather Confederation, Epson, and Hewlett- Packard. He was born in Den Helder, The Netherlands and holds a masters degree in Environmental Technology from Wageningen University, the Netherlands. Jan-Willem is married and has two children.

Farouk (Mato) leads public policy efforts and partnerships with major stakeholders across the Sub-Saharan Africa region to advance MSD’s access to health and pharmaceutical policy issues. He also oversees MSD’s corporate responsibility efforts to ensure effective implementation and results across the continent.

Farouk (Mato)’s experience over the last 15 years has involved organisations and activities in the private, PPP, non-profit, and public sectors including Gavi, AMREF Health Africa, the Privy Council Office in Ottawa, and the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA). His advocacy and policy engagement in global health, international development, and foreign policy have been recognised by (amongst others) the Institute of Cultural Diplomacy in Berlin, Walter and Duncan Gordon Foundation’s Global Fellowship, and the Banff Forum in Canada.

Born in Tanzania, Farouk (Mato) grew up there and in Kenya, , and Canada. He received his graduate degrees from Harvard and Cambridge universities, and completed his undergraduate education at McGill. Farouk (Mato) also holds a Certificate in Social Entrepreneurship from INSEAD.

David Nabarro Special Adviser of the Secretary-General on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and Climate Change

David Nabarro serves as Special Adviser of the Secretary-General on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and Climate Change. He works with Governments and other stakeholders to galvanize action on implementation of both the 2030 and Climate Action agendas. He also oversees the Secretary-General’s special initiatives, including Every Woman Every Child, Global Pulse and Zero Hunger Challenge, and the UN Office for Partnerships.

David Nabarro has more than 30 years’ experience of public health, nutrition and development at country, regional and global levels, and has held positions in non-governmental organizations, universities, national Governments and the United Nations (UN) system.

David Nabarro was born in London in 1949 and qualified as a physician in 1973. He started his career with four years in the United Kingdom National Health Service. He then contributed to the health and nutrition of mothers and children, through community development and humanitarian relief programmes, particularly in Iraq, South Asia and East Africa.

David Nabarro has held positions in the London and Liverpool Schools of Tropical Medicine, served as Chief Health and Population Adviser to the United Kingdom Overseas Development Administration and has been a Director for Human Development in the UK Department for International Development.

David Nabarro joined the UN system in 1999, leading the Roll Back Malaria initiative at the World Health Organization (WHO). He was appointed as a WHO Executive Director in 2001 and led WHO’s Department for Health Action in Crises from 2003. Between 2005 and 2014 he served as the UN System’s Senior Coordinator for Avian and Pandemic Influenza. Since 2009 he has been the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Food Security and Nutrition, a position he continues to hold. From 2011 to 2015 he served as Coordinator of the Movement to Scale Up Nutrition. From September 2014 until December 2015 he was Special Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General on Ebola, providing strategic and policy direction for the international response.
