Solution to February’s Crossword TAIL OF A DOG Shona here – Missus and I were struggling to think of a topic for my article when we spotted some things on the ground. She was reminded of a very sad thing that happened to beloved Daisy her other greyhound. There in her files she found the article Daisy wrote so here it is as a warning to you all, dogs and their servants [Missus says owners is the correct term!!!]. Following a recent walk [actually in 2011], I lay in my basket while Missus worked. I decided to make myself comfortable for a nap when I hit my chest on the hard plastic side. Ouch I yelped and for the next few minutes as I moved around my chest really hurt. Missus came over and ran her hands all over my body. I usually enjoy being stroked but when she touched my chest I yelped again. One phone call later we were off to the vets. Dee checked me all over then did an x-ray to see if I had broken something. “It looks like a bruise; give her Metacam for the pain and arnica for the bruise”. Then back to Missus2 who looked after me while Missus went litter picking. I tried lying down, but I was more and more uncomfortable. When Missus returned, I was standing with my belly swollen and very bruised. Off to see Dee and then the pain started with a syringe of blood taken from my neck. Oh dear, more than 40 minutes for my blood to clot rather than the normal 2 minutes. Missus was quizzed about what I had eaten that morning - rat poison was mentioned. Don’t look at me, I can’t tell you, missus. She looked very worried and hugged me close while Dee gave me 7, yes 7, Vitamin K injections (Continued from page 23) Bookworm in my neck and hips. Ouch I yelped. Come back tomorrow morning for more DINNER PARTY. tests. No thanks, I told the missus. This is one of McCall Smith’s one-off-stories, written in his gentle, lucid style, I had a fever overnight and missus nursed me until I slept. Next day Dee put a and is a wonderful comedy of errors. thermometer and her finger up my “ouch don’t do that again”. She checked my body then said come back tomorrow. Barbara did the honours the next morning (Continued from page 13) Shona and took another armful of blood – 4 minutes to clot which is much better but As to the half empty bottles of beer, pop, cartons of juice etc. Such awful wasters keep taking the medicines and come back next week. Suffice it to say I have when so many [including me] are going hungry. I hear the people yelling on the been on Vitamin K pills stuffed down my throat and drops on my tongue 3 times TV about waste and the environment but some people seem to think the a day. Metacam helps and missus strokes my tummy while the swelling slowly village and surrounding countryside is a big litter bin. I think it is such a shame, goes down – reabsorbed she says. Dee is still waiting for the test results. when you have a beautiful village and countryside, to throw your rubbish down and empty your car rubbish out of the window. What sort of people do that – My warning to all dogs is be careful what you eat in case it is poisonous. uncaring, selfish and not the sort I want my Missus associating with. It’s time That applies to children too – sweeties are not always good to eat for my walk so I must send this off to that nice Head Hitter. Love Shona especially if they are lying on the ground. To all adults please think carefully when you decide to kill pests or weeds. Plea from the Parish Council to all dog owners/walkers. We have had a What you use may kill those of us who are less aware [and always hungry]. complaint that there seems to be a lot of dog excrement around - please, Poor Daisy nearly died because of what she ate off the ground. Missus tells me please clear up after your dog. It is really unpleasant and unhealthy to off if I eat something, pulls me away which I really don’t like her doing. You walk in, wheel your push chair through or watch your toddler run through. leave such tasty things around - I’ve had pastry, cake and sausage out of a It takes seconds. We have asked for another visit from the dog warden so sausage roll – delicious. When you spend all that money on these treats why do be on your guard. “We are watching out for you”. Please be responsible you throw bits away. Worse why don’t you take your litter home. dog owners. Editor (Continued on page 36) 36 13

Contact Edward Scott I should say that I am fortunate in having space to grow a lot of vegetables so I am saved the nasty choice of having to be selective. However, having tried on 01691 656256 or 07989881870 most things I am aware of what gives the least return and can head the list for being rejected. Number one on my list would be potatoes. Its not that they have a poor yield per square metre but the snag is you need so many of them that they could take the whole garden. Then peas, the yield is one of the lowest, the effort required is above average and the modern techniques for freezing do a good job. With the exception of winter cabbage, the brassicas do not give a very high yield, take a long growing season, need protection from pigeons and are no great gain over the shops. In fact the same really goes for the winter root crops, with the best of the bunch being carrots. Also rejected would be onions following the same arguments as for potatoes. The saddest decision would be to reject asparagus as it is among the most desirable of vegetables and comes at a time when little else is available. Actually the yield is not bad but you have to dedicate a quite large area. Where does that leave us? (Continued from page 27) St Michael’s] wonder why the church seeks to get itself involved in one of the seven basic physiological functions of the human state. The Bishops’ publication of the need for abstinence in civil partnerships has even prompted the two Archbishops to issue a statement apologising for the publication at this time. A significant number of bishops have written condemning the publication, but a majority still insisted on its release. The union of a man and a woman appears as early as Genesis in the Bible and has a history going back to the 5th century BC. Marriage ceremonies are recorded in 3rd century BC Mesopotamia. Such a union has many advantages for society, notably having two people to share the workload and cost of bringing up children, but this function does not need the Church’s blessing. Nevertheless Moses (who many hold responsible for writing at least part of Genesis) probably found that having a Deity was helpful in keeping man and woman together. At least he could draw his people’s attention to a higher entity proclaiming the value of marriage and the penalties for misbehaviour. He wasn’t slow in invoking the Almighty for many other laws as well. The famous chapter in Deuteronomy lays down the punishments for transgressions between the sexes, but sex between a man and a virgin only draws a penalty if they are found out (about half a year’s wages). The Gospels do little more than uphold the Old Testament: Paul however is forever urging the peoples to whom he writes to keep moral lives, most forcefully in his letter to the Hebrews in which he states that sex outside marriage is immoral. The progression from financial to moral penalties shows Christianity developing from the Old Testament. Early societies were worried about maintaining populations. In Genesis we have God saying to man and woman ‘be fruitful and multiply and replenish the earth’. Whether or not Moses wrote the book of Genesis, he must have supported the idea of having lots of children given that he probably lost quite a few during what Osbert Lancaster once memorably described as his ‘navigational bloomers in the desert’. In the past infant mortality rates were often over 50% (they are now about 0.4%). Thus Augustine’s statement that sex between spouses was immoral self-indulgence if the couple tried to prevent conception was probably not unreasonable, although it led to severe poverty in many instances. By the end of the first century AD, the Christian church had become powerful in Western Europe and began taking over many of the functions of the state, including the recognition of marriage. Cracks in this power started as early as the 11th century when the Holy Roman emperor Henry IV sought to take powers from the Pope and over next millennium the influence of the church waned. The present argument could be seen as the Christian church clinging on to the right to hold the only proper marriage: yet it could be said that this is a ceremony that religion took over to help the state and then began to put its own interpretation on it. Now the state is merely bringing back into its own

News from St. Michael's Church Rector’s Ramblings

As I sit typing this first edition of The Rectors Ramblings I’m listening to Storm Ciara blowing a gale around the garden and front of the Rectory. It’s on days like today that we are reminded of the ferocity of the weather and how quickly things can change in an instant! The reading I’d like us to take a glance at today is one that may be well known to many of you from Mark 4:35 through to verse 41 and is titled ‘Jesus Calms the Storm’ In this passage the disciples find themselves in a situation where it was evening and Jesus suggested they cross to the other side of the lake of Galilee in actual fact. So they got in a boat, which was not a new experience for some of them who were fishermen and set out for the other side. Jesus was tired and so found a place to curl up and get some Z’s in front of the boat and this is where the fun begins. A storm or squall blew up, apparently not an usual occurrence on the lake which was huge and the boat was about to be swamped. Unsurprisingly the disciples are panicking and go and wake Jesus up exclaiming ‘Teacher don’t you care if we drown?’ Then Jesus does something very profound He stands up and commands the wind and the waves to stop and guess what - they do! At this moment the disciples are terrified and exclaim ‘Who is this that even the winds and waves obey him.’ freeflow Have you ever felt like that in your own life, terrified by the circumstances you are facing, the diagnosis that has just hit your consciousness, right out of the blue. Drainage Limited Life is oftentimes like that, isn’t it. We can’t always be prepared for what’s coming but what we can be assured of are the words of Psalm 46:1 ‘God is DOMESTIC / INDUSTRIAL / COMMERCIAL / AGRICULTURAL our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.’ A source of strength and peace that makes no sense.  Septic Tank Emptying  Interceptor Emptying Please be assured of my prayers in the coming weeks, months and years as we journey together seeking God in all that we do and seek to embody in our  Blocked Drains  Flood Assistance communities.  CCTV Camera Surveys  Sewer Jetting I will be making an effort to be a bit more visible in the villages over the  Gully Emptying  24/7 Emergency Callout coming weeks so if you see me in one of the pubs or in the shop please do come over and say hello. I’d also like to bring to your attention that as of the 1st of March services will recommence on a Sunday at 9.30am in St Michaels.
