Archaeological Investigations Project 2003 Post-Determination & Non-Planning Related Projects South East BUCKINGHAMSHIRE Aylebury Vale 3/763 (E.11.M019) SP 73732250 MK18 3LA CLAYDON ROAD, HOGSHAW Watching Brief and Salvage Recording: Claydon Road, Hogshaw, Buckinghamshire Fell, D Milton Keynes : Archaeological Services & Consultancy Ltd., 2003, 39pp, colour pls, figs, tabs, refs Work undertaken by: Archaeological Services & Consultancy Ltd A number of archaeological remains were observed, notably a group of medieval buildings adjacent to Claydon Road, which may have been buildings associated with the Knights Hospitallers were also observed in the northern part of the site. A number of finds, including an assemblage of medieval pottery were also recorded. Roman pottery was present with roof and floor tiles which could have suggested the location of a Roman building in the vicinity of the site. A flint knife, dating to the Neolithic/Early Bronze Age, was also present on the site. There was some slight indications at the northern end of the site that the ground had been artificially reduced to extract either sand or clay. On the eastern side of the site a terraced section revealed a possible man made feature in the form of either a ploughing headland or boundary. [Au(abr)] Archaeological Investigations Project 2003 Post-Determination & Non-Planning Related Projects South East 3/766 (E.11.M001) SP 88202705 LU7 0BU ALL SAINT'S CHURCH, SOULBURY All Saint's Church, Soulbury, Buckinghamshire Mumford, J Oxford : Oxford Archaeology, 2003, 10pp, figs, tabs, refs Work undertaken by: Oxford Archaeology The watching brief revealed made ground deposits, one of which contained concentrations of brick rubble, tile, and masonry possibly associated with the 1863 renovation of the 14th century chancel. Saunders, G Baldock : Heritage Network, 2003, 5pp, figs Work undertaken by: Heritage Network One feature was observed during the groundworks, this was a metalled surface which ran across the new access road close to its northern end on a north-west to south-east alignment. It yielded no datable artefacts although post-medieval tile was observed on the topsoil that sealed it. The surface aligned with a public bridleway that ran across the scheduled area and joined a footpath that formed part of the Midshires Way. Depsite the proximity of the site to the Deserted Medieval Village, no features or artefacts predating the post-medieval period were observed. No archaeological remains were noted, except for the Second World War air-raid shelters. The principal discoveries were two walls that once formed part of the terrace arrangements in the grounds of the house and a former gravel path on the south terrace. The base of a statue was also noted. On the North Terrace there was evidence of semi-circular terrace features dating from the late 1600s. This feature had been sealed in c.1774 when a gravel drive or pathway was laid. The original foundation may have dated from the 16th or 17th centuries and may have formed part of the Tudor building. An assemblage of architectural fragments was collected. No pottery or other finds to indicate that the area had been occupied before the development of Lenborough Road were observed. [Au(abr)] SMR primary record number:20897 Archaeological Investigations Project 2003 Post-Determination & Non-Planning Related Projects South East 3/774 (E.11.M008) SP 67003750 MK18 5DQ STOWE HOUSE, STOWE Stowe House, Stowe, Buckinghamshire Simms, M & Holmes, A Oxford : Oxford Archaeology, 2003, 39pp, colour pls, figs, tabs, refs Work undertaken by: Oxford Archaeology The excavations in the North Front revealed an alignment of three stone plinths on either side of the North Portico roughly respecting the present arcade. These structures may have been built during or after the construction of the North Front by the first Lord Cobham. A modern or earlier 19th century system of brick and stone culverts was found under the cobbled walkway behind the arcade. In the South Front the excavations revealed a clay lined tank possibly associated with the construction of Stowe House. This structure was built over and within the substantial deposits of made ground forming the South Front terrace constructed in the late 18th century by Earl Temple. [Au(abr)] Archaeological periods represented: MO, PM 3/775 (E.11.M010) SP 67433750 MK18 5DB STOWE LANDSCAPE GARDENS Archaeological Investigation Around the Base of the Statue of King George I at Stowe Landscape Gardens, Buckinghamshire Prentice, J Northampton : Northamptonshire Archaeology, 2003, 20pp, colour pls, figs, refs Work undertaken by: Northhamptonshire Archaeology Excavation revealed that the plinth was constructed on a foundation of undressed stone. A watching brief during the repair of the pedestal revealed that this part of the structure comprised a brick core with dressed facing stones. [Au(abr)] Archaeological periods represented: PM 3/776 (E.11.L002) SP 67403740 MK18 5EH STOWE LANDSCAPE GARDENS An Archaeological Watching Brief During the Planting of Trees at Stowe Landscape Gardens, Buckinghamshire Prentice, J Northampton : Northamptonshire Archaeology, 2003, 62pp, pls, figs, tabs, refs Work undertaken by: Northamptonshire Archaeology The watching brief was undertaken during the planting of trees. Evidence of Roman occupation was identified with significant in situ remains being discovered. The area surrounding this was investigated using geophysical survey and revealed a probable tile kiln dating to the Roman period.
