What Is Plastic Reusable Packaging?
Sustainability Advantages of Reusable Containers What is plastic reusable packaging? Plastic reusable packaging products are used to move, store and distribute product within a single operation or entire supply chain. From raw material to finished goods, plastic reusable packaging safely and efficiently moves material/product along different points of the supply chain and ultimately to its destination. It is ideal for multiple trip applications in a closed-loop environment or well-managed supply chain. It can also be used effectively in a managed open-loop system, with reverse logistics in place to return empty containers or pallets for re-use or replenishment. Products can include: • Hand-held containers, bins, boxes or totes • Pallets, slip sheets, top frames and top caps • Divider sheets • Bulk containers, bins, boxes or totes • Protective interior dunnage (custom) • Storage containers and metal systems • Custom designed and engineered packaging By design, plastic reusable packaging products offer durable, rigid construction; contoured surfaces; easy-to-grasp handles; high levels of recyclability and vast identification options. These dimensionally consistent containers and pallets are easy to handle and interface effortlessly with all types of high-speed automated equipment. Knowing the difference, as well as the SPI codes, will help you make more informed decisions about recycling. The seven types of plastic include: Polyethylene Terephthalate (PETE or PET) High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) Miscellaneous plastics (includes: polycarbonate, polylactide, acrylic, acrylonitrile butadiene, styrene, fiberglass, and nylon) When it comes to promotional giveaways, and even items we use around the house, there is no material more important than plastic. The same can be said for the items we use at the office. Most of our supplies contain at least a little bit of this material. In fact, humans have thus far produced 9.1 billion tons of plastic! THE FACTS ABOUT PLASTIC BAGS: RECYCLABLE, AFFORDABLE, AND CONVENIENT Plastic bags are 100% recyclable, reusable, made from natural gas, not oil, and a sustainable choice for consumers, communities and businesses. What’s more, the plastic bag manufacturing and recycling industry is a uniquely American industry that employs more than 30,000 Americans in 349 plants across the country, including more than 1,000 people in Washington state. Bans and taxes on plastic bags are misguided policies that don’t make sense. They don’t help the environment, force less sustainable options, threaten local manufacturing jobs and raise grocery costs for consumers. Instead of banning a reusable, 100% recyclable, American-made product, recycling solutions can help reduce litter, give consumers a choice, and protect American jobs. Plastic grocery bags are the best checkout option for our environment On a per bag basis, plastic bags are more resource efficient, reduce landfill waste and generate fewer greenhouse gas emissions. o They take up a lot less space in a landfill: 1,000 plastic bags weigh 13 pounds; 1,000 paper bags weigh 114 pounds.i o They generate 80 % less waste than paper bags.ii American plastic bags are made from natural gas, NOT oil. Pack Like a Pro! Packing clothes and accessories seems easy enough but these days there are so many tools to make packing even more efficient by saving space in your bag as well as organizing it so it doesn’t become a disaster going in and out of it. Warnings: Shorts are not always the best attire even during the summer season for the UK so check weather before you pack and remember their 50-60 is not the same as a hot state like Florida or country like Jamaica. Don’t be misled if you believe jeans are great to pack. They aren’t the best type of pants to take as they weigh more and are thicker than casual pants such as kaki or chino (cotton) pants. If it is a colder season, taking a pair of long johns/thermal underclothing and layer instead. You need lots of shoes to go with all your outfits? Absolutely NOT! You just need a good pair of walking/hiking shoes or boots and a nice pair of casual shoes (optional: formal if you have a formal engagement during your vacation) Walk-About in UK: A lot of the ground for walking in the UK the majority of time will be uneven pavement/sidewalks and grounds. If you have bad ankles, consider taking hiking boots. NOTE: Don’t pack them in the check-in bag but wear them on the plane. Once settled in your seat, take them off during the long flight and using slippers or sock booties. Then, pack one pair of nice/casual shoes in your check-in bag. -

Terracycle Internships
TerraCycle Internships Interns at TerraCycle learn the ins-and-outs of eco-capitalism, recycling and social entrepreneurship, and serve as eco-ambassadors in both a local and global context. TerraCycle Europe offers 3-6 month volunteer internships on a rolling basis based in our upcycled European headquarters in North-West London. From this office TerraCycle’s recycling programmes in the UK, France, Germany, Spain, Austria, Switzerland, Netherlands, Belgium, Norway, Sweden and Denmark are all centrally managed. Internships are open to undergraduates, graduates or recent graduates with a strong interest in green business, eco-capitalism, upcycling, recycling or social entrepreneurship. We are always on the lookout for interns who can speak at least one (and more than one is an added bonus) of the following languages - English, French, German, Spanish, Dutch, Norwegian, Swedish or Danish. Lean Packaging: Using Plastic Reusable Packaging to Support Your Lean Operation Copyright ã2004 ORBIS Corporation Executive Overview Today, more than 33% of US companies recognize the need for a lean philosophy to gain optimization in their operations and entire supply chain. Very simply….the lean philosophy emphasizes total system efficiency, continual improvement and value-added activity, to reduce costs. 1 This can be achieved in three ways: § The aggressive elimination of waste § Improved productive flow of material/product § Highly optimized inventory management According to the March 2001 issue of Modern Materials Handling, “Businesses succeed or fail based on their supply chain performance, therefore, the scope of lean thinking must encompass every aspect of every job within a company, including factory operations, engineering, project management, transportation and finance.” 2 And this includes packaging. According to Ford Motor Company, plastic reusable packaging drives lean production by facilitating the tremendous benefits. It opens the door to better scheduling, smaller batches and inventories, faster response to schedule changes and smaller, more frequent deliveries leading to the success of their "Synchronous Material Flow." It facilitates improved layouts and processes and provides a cleaner, safer, more ergonomic workplace. The net effect drives costs down. 3 The concepts behind lean production are not industry-specific. Whether shipping plastic bottles to a soft drink bottler for filling; trim parts to an automotive manufacturer; electronic components to a computer manufacturer or consumer goods to the mass retailer, plastic reusable packaging will help move product faster, better, safer and more cost effectively. While lean production seems is prevalent in the automotive industry, plenty of other leading industries have adopted lean philosophies, including: beverage, electronics, aerospace and pharmaceutical. -

Over two million plastic shopping bags are disposed of in the garbage every week in the City of Vancouver, with 63% of 2 them having been re-used for garbage and pet waste . The manufacture and transportation of plastic bags consume significant amounts of non-renewable resources and they are not bio-degradable. We do not know for sure how long plastic bags will take to break down.
