The 1 1/8-mile Florida Derby will reward points on 100-40-20-10 scale to the top four finishers. Strike Power yielded the early lead last time to Promises Fulfilled, who proceeded to establish a moderate pace, but look for a change in tactics Saturday. Drawn in the rail post, Strike Power figures to be sent from the gate by Luis Saez and he’s got the speed to dictate terms after displaying tremendous early zip recording a pair of sharp gate-to-wire sprint wins in his first two starts, The Speightstown colt answered the two-turn question finishing second, 2 ¼-length clear of champion 2yo Good Magic, in the Fountain of Youth and trainer Mark Hennig has raved about his charge’s development in the four-week interim since his last start. We’ll tab a wire-to-wire win from the improving colt. Catholic Boy came up a little short when opening 2018 with a second in the Sam F. Davis (G3) but still registered a respectable 101 BRIS Speed rating (career-best) after rallying into a slow pace. With only four published works beforehand, the son of More Than Ready had every reason to be a little short last time and we expect him to be more fit for Jonathan Thomas, who shipped his pupil to Gulfstream early for a visually impressive half-mile drill earlier this week. If any other speed takes on our top choice, Catholic Boy figures to receive an ideal set-up for his late run and we’ll look for a strong finish from the Grade 2-winning juvenile. Audible has been rated as the 9-5 morning line favorite off a smashing 5 ½-length win in the Holy Bull (G2) and Todd Pletcher will seek to extend his record with a fifth Florida Derby tally, winning last year’s edition with subsequent Kentucky Derby winner Always Dreaming. The Into Mischief colt will have to overcome post 8 and doesn’t figure to receive the same plum trip from last time when no quality speed was present. And the extra sixteenth of a mile is at least a minor concern with his speed-oriented pedigree (by Into Mischief and out of a Gilded Time mare). We still have plenty of respect for the talented performer but will try to beat Audible for the win at short odds. Promises Fulfilled made it look easy last time but we’re expecting a different result with different circumstances Saturday. A BETTER MOUSETRAP My idea is to give first priority for Derby eligibility (Tier One) to the winner of the previous year's Breeders' Cup Juvenile plus the top three finishers in the big five preps: Florida Derby, Santa Anita Derby, Blue Grass, Arkansas Derby and Wood Memorial. By Mike Shutty, HorseRacingNation.com Early Edition HORSE RACING NATION’S KENTUCKY DERBY SUPER SCREENER INTRODUCTION There are countless ways to dissect the probable Kentucky Derby field in search of the ultimate winner. Dosage Index, Dual Qualifier status, pedigree, Speed Ratings, prep race quality, Graded Stakes wins, workouts days before the Derby and a trainer’s Derby record are just a few of the criteria that people use when assessing a field of probable Derby contenders. These types of factors fall in and out of favor over the years and each has had its share of success in helping track down a Kentucky Derby winner. Each year, we are reminded of other important, proven screening criteria we should keep in mind as we handicap the Kentucky Derby. Examples would include the following: • Don’t bet to win on Derby entrants that have never run as a 2 year-old. Most recently, Curlin and Bodemeister tried to overcome this long-standing tenant but both came up a bit short in their respective Kentucky Derby endeavors. • Only one horse (Regret) has ever won the Derby off just 3 lifetime starts (make that only two horses now that Big Brown achieved this feat in 2008) • Post position 20 has never produced a winner (Big Brown busted that one as well and I’ll Have Another won from the 19 hole in 2012 so this screening criteria weakens some as a result) • Must have a final prep race run at the mile and eighth distance (Charismatic was able to break that barrier in winning the 1999 Kentucky Derby as have several second place Derby finishers) • Must
