Tdn America Today the Tdn Derby Top 12 for Mar TUESDAY, MARCH 23, 2021 THE TDN DERBY TOP 12 DUE TO COVID-19 RESTRICTIONS, WOODBINE=S OPENING DAY IS IN JEOPARDY FOR MARCH 23 by Bill Finley With less than a month to go before the scheduled opener on Apr. 17, Woodbine is facing the distinct possibility that it will be unable to operate next month due to COVID-19 protocols in place in Ontario. Woodbine is in an area currently designated as a Grey Zone, where horse racing is among the activities that are not allowed. Last year, the track was forced to end its meet two weeks early because of the same restrictions now threatening the April opener. AI am really starting to get concerned,@ Woodbine CEO Jim Lawson said. A harness racing meet is currently being conducted at nearby Mohawk Park and Fort Erie, set to open June 1, will also be able to operate. Both are located in zones where there are fewer restrictions. Ward lists 45 Ward=s suit was filed last week in Jessamine Circuit Court. The horses that he trained for the Ramseys from June, 2020 to the Maker suit was filed a week earlier in Fayette Circuit Court.

EXISTING LAW: 1) Grants the California Horse Racing Board (CHRB) the authority to regulate the various forms of horse racing authorized in this state. 2) Limits the number of races that may be imported by associations and fairs to no more than 50 races per day on days when live thoroughbred or fair racing is being conducted in this state, with specified exceptions. 3) Exempts from that 50-race per day limit races imported that are part of the race card of certain prominent races, including the Kentucky Derby, the Kentucky Oaks, the Preakness Stakes, the Belmont Stakes, the Jockey Club Gold Cup, the Travers Stakes, the Arlington Million, the Breeders’ Cup, the Dubai World Cup, the Arkansas Derby, the Apple Blossom Handicap, or the Haskell Invitational. 4) Authorizes thoroughbred racing associations or fairs to distribute the audiovisual signal and accept wagers on the results of out-of-state and international thoroughbred races during the calendar period the association or fair is conducting live racing, including days on which there is no live racing being conducted by the association or fair. Dosage Index, Dual Qualifier status, pedigree, Speed Ratings, prep race quality, Graded Stakes wins, workouts days before the Derby and a trainer’s Derby record are just a few of the criteria that people use when assessing a field of probable Derby contenders. These types of factors fall in and out of favor over the years and each has had its share of success in helping track down a Kentucky Derby winner. Each year, we are reminded of other important, proven screening criteria we should keep in mind as we handicap the Kentucky Derby. Examples would include the following: • Don’t bet to win on Derby entrants that have never run as a 2 year-old. Most recently, Curlin and Bodemeister tried to overcome this long-standing tenant but both came up a bit short in their respective Kentucky Derby endeavors. • Only one horse (Regret) has ever won the Derby off just 3 lifetime starts (make that only two horses now that Big Brown achieved this feat in 2008) • Post position 20 has never produced a winner (Big Brown busted that one as well and I’ll Have Another won from the 19 hole in 2012 so this screening criteria weakens some as a result) • Must have a final prep race run at the mile and eighth distance (Charismatic was able to break that barrier in winning the 1999 Kentucky Derby as have several second place Derby finishers) • Must
