ADELAIDE She SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA Speaks SEASON 2021 June Presented in partnership with Saturday 19 the Elder Conservatorium of Music Elder Hall at the University of Adelaide Le Parc 2 She Speaks A celebration of the past, present and future of women composers in Australia and beyond. LUNCHTIME CHAMBER MUSIC CONCERT 10 Domestic Voices 1pm, Elder Hall SYMPOSIUM 15 Silent Women 4pm, Madley Studio EVENING ORCHESTRAL CONCERT 16 She Speaks 7pm, Elder Hall LATE EVENING CONCERT 19 When We Speak 9pm, Elder Hall Presented in partnership with the Elder Conservatorium of Music at the University of Adelaide 3 WELCOME You might say that She Speaks is part of the journey towards the fulfilment of a long-felt goal. A few years ago, I stumbled on ABC Classic’s inaugural long-weekend dedicated to music by women composers. As I listened to a huge variety of music by composers I barely knew, I was surprised, delighted and captivated by the extraordinary range of musical styles and expression across the centuries. I also ultimately felt a sense of shame and disappointment: Here I was, a university music graduate who had spent most of his professional life in the world of music, and I had scant knowledge of these composers or their work. Every musical organisation has a role to play in giving music by women an important place in our concert life, and here at the ASO we are resolved to make a difference to the status quo. So, this year, each of our Symphony Series concerts includes music by women. We have also created the Miriam Hyde Giving Circle, which, with your generosity, will make it possible for us to commission and perform more work by women.

  • Savoy and Regent Label Discography
Discography of the Savoy/Regent and Associated Labels Savoy was formed in Newark New Jersey in 1942 by Herman Lubinsky and Fred Mendelsohn. Lubinsky acquired Mendelsohn’s interest in June 1949. Mendelsohn continued as producer for years afterward. Savoy recorded jazz, R&B, blues, gospel and classical. The head of sales was Hy Siegel. Production was by Ralph Bass, Ozzie Cadena, Leroy Kirkland, Lee Magid, Fred Mendelsohn, Teddy Reig and Gus Statiras. The subsidiary Regent was extablished in 1948. Regent recorded the same types of music that Savoy did but later in its operation it became Savoy’s budget label. The Gospel label was formed in Newark NJ in 1958 and recorded and released gospel music. The Sharp label was formed in Newark NJ in 1959 and released R&B and gospel music. The Dee Gee label was started in Detroit Michigan in 1951 by Dizzy Gillespie and Divid Usher. Dee Gee recorded jazz, R&B, and popular music. The label was acquired by Savoy records in the late 1950’s and moved to Newark NJ. The Signal label was formed in 1956 by Jules Colomby, Harold Goldberg and Don Schlitten in New York City. The label recorded jazz and was acquired by Savoy in the late 1950’s. There were no releases on Signal after being bought by Savoy. The Savoy and associated label discography was compiled using our record collections, Schwann Catalogs from 1949 to 1982, a Phono-Log from 1963. Some album numbers and all unissued album information is from “The Savoy Label Discography” by Michel Ruppli.

  • Original Compositions for Full Concert Band and Chorus Published in the United States
ORIGINAL COMPOSITIONS FOR FULL CONCERT BAND AND CHORUS PUBLISHED IN THE UNITED STATES by W. DAVID RICHARDSON (Under the Direction of Allen Crowell) ABSTRACT Compositions originally composed and published for full concert band and chorus seem to be plagued by a cyclic problem: the lack of information about the compositions discourages their performance, the lack of performances discourages their composition, the lack of composition discourages gathering information about the pieces. In an attempt to break this cycle, the document is an annotated bibliography of original compositions published in the United States for full concert band and SATB chorus. Each music publisher included in the Music Publishers Association of the United States of America (MPAUSA) directory was surveyed to discover compositions. After a review of literature, information is offered regarding specific delimitations for instrumentation and genre followed by survey procedures and data collection methods. Of the 683 publishers surveyed, 384 could not be reached, 274 did not have originally composed compositions for band and chorus, and 25 publishers held 42 originally composed works for full band and chorus. Each bibliography entry contains the title, composer, publisher, publication date, duration, movements/tempi, instrumentation, genre, text author/source, and full text for each piece meeting the delimitation criteria. This same information is listed for 10 significant works not quite meeting the delimitation criteria. • John Jenkins
1 The ALTOSAX of JOHN JENKINS Solographer: Jan Evensmo Last update: May 4, 2020 2 Born: Chicago, Jan. 3, 1931 Died: July 12, 1993 Introduction: I have to admit I had never heard of John Jenkins until into my mature years, but then I found his personal style very interesting and he certainly deserves his solography and recognition. Through a brief period of seven months in 1957, he participated in several recording sessions with the cream of his contemporaries, and he was obviously considered a great talent. Why he quit in the middle of success is not known. History: Jenkins initially studied clarinet in high school but switched to saxophone after six months on the instrument. He played in jam sessions led by Joe Segal at Roosevelt College from 1949-1956. He played with Art Farmer in 1955 and led his own group at the Bee Hive in Chicago in December that year. In 1957 he played with Charlie Mingus and recorded two albums as a leader. He played as a sideman with Johnny Griffin, Donald Byrd, Hank Mobley, Paul Quinichette, Clifford Jordan, Sahib Shihab and Wilbur Ware in 1957 (not the late 1950s and early 1960s as stated), but essentially dropped out of music after 1962, aside from a few dates with Gloria Coleman. After leaving the jazz world he worked as a messenger in New York and dabbled in jewelry; he sold brass objects at street fairs in the 1970s. After 1983 he began practicing again and playing live on street corners; shortly before his death he played with Clifford Jordan (Wikipedia).

Goods The Hard Bop Trombone: An exploration of the improvisational styles of the four trombonist who defined the genre (1955-1964). Emmett C. Goods This dissertation examines the improvisational stylings of Curtis Fuller, Locksley “Slide” Hampton, Julian Priester and Grachan Moncur III from 1955 through 1964. In part one of this study, each musician is presented through their improvisational connections to J.J. Johnson, the leading trombonist of the Bebop era. His improvisational signatures are then traced through to the musical innovations of the Hard-Bop Trombone Era. Source material for this part of the study includes published books, dissertations, articles, online sources, discographies and personal interviews. Part two of this paper analyzes selected solos from each of the four subjects to identify the defining characteristics of the Hard-Bop Trombone Era. Evidence for these claims is bolstered by interviews conducted with the four men and their protégés. In a third and final part, a discography has been compiled for each artists during the defined era. Through historical analysis of these four artists’ music and recording of first-hand accounts from the artists themselves, this document attempts to properly contextualize the Hard-Bop Trombone Era as unique and important to the further development of the jazz trombone.
