  • Connie Francis America's Sweetheart of Song
Celebrity Profile Connie Francis America’s Sweetheart of Song Photos Courtesy of Connie Francis At merely the age of 4, Concetta Rosemarie Franconero made her debut at Olympic Park in Irvington, New Jersey, singing “Anchors Away,” while accompanying herself on the accordion. Connie developed a love of music from the first time her father, George played the concertina that his father brought from Italy in 1905. From that point on, music became Connie’s world. Connie’s father took her to every radio and tel- evision audition in existence so she could reap the benefits and experiences of live per- formances. Little did young Concetta fathom that she would become the world’s most popular female singer and the number one best selling female recording artist of all time. At age 11, Connie was a regular on “Marie Moser’s Starlets” local Newark TV show nd later appeared on the “Ted Mack Amateur Hour.” The following year she made yet another national TV appearance on the “Arthur Godfrey Talent Scout Show,” finally ending up with a four-year stint as regular on “Startime,” a TV show that featured tal- ented child performers. The show was produced by the late George Scheck, who would become her lifetime manager. Connie never missed a week in her four years on the show, showing indeed her stability and stamina as a trouper. In her early teens she was sought after to make demo recordings for music publishers who were impressed with her distinctive voice. However, at the sessions she was told deliberately to imitate other artists for whom they wanted to pitch their songs.

The Legacy of Leadership is Persistent with the Class having Leadership like Ron Lazar, supported by his lovely bride Lilliane and 32 other helping hands, 1953 had an 80.4% Participation tally in the 2015 Dartmouth College Fund drive, an awesome achievement. Many were involved, but leadership and persistence were motivated by our leader Ron and Lilliane, and 32 teammates that Ron has dubbed Team Terrific, helping hands that led to this extraordinary achievement to sustain the Legacy of 1953. Details of this fabulous achievement follow. Mark Smoller’s Class Notes for the Alumni Magazine in the fall. “It was not, “So long!”, but “See ya later!” at a send-off gathering for Bonnie and Dave Siegal. Thirty-three classmates and their wives and widows gathering at Kendall to wish the Siegal’s well. After many years of on the scene, service to the Class and the College, Bonnie and Dave are leaving for Tulsa, Oklahoma, and will be missed in Hanover. We look forward to seeing them as they return for various events, and wish them good luck in their new digs. Attending the Siegal’s party were Dick and Cynthia O’Connor, Clark and Linda Brink, Seth Carpenter, Liz King, Jane Springer, Russ and Marge Cook, Bill Murray, Bob and Mary Bee Longabaugh, Jack and Jody Zimmerman, Bob and Anne Simpson, Nancy and Caroline Johnson, Lillian and Holly Goss, Put and Marian Blodgett, Dave and Bonnie Siegal, Allen Collins, Chuck and Donna Reilly, Harlan Fair, Granthia Preston, Joe and Jane Stevens, and John and Barbara Kennedy. • Aint Gonna Study War No More / Down by the Riverside
The Danish Peace Academy 1 Holger Terp: Aint gonna study war no more Ain't gonna study war no more By Holger Terp American gospel, workers- and peace song. Author: Text: Unknown, after 1917. Music: John J. Nolan 1902. Alternative titles: “Ain' go'n' to study war no mo'”, “Ain't gonna grieve my Lord no more”, “Ain't Gwine to Study War No More”, “Down by de Ribberside”, “Down by the River”, “Down by the Riverside”, “Going to Pull My War-Clothes” and “Study war no more” A very old spiritual that was originally known as Study War No More. It started out as a song associated with the slaves’ struggle for freedom, but after the American Civil War (1861-65) it became a very high-spirited peace song for people who were fed up with fighting.1 And the folk singer Pete Seeger notes on the record “Waist Deep in the Big Muddy and Other Love Songs”, that: "'Down by the Riverside' is, of course, one of the oldest of the Negro spirituals, coming out of the South in the years following the Civil War."2 But is the song as we know it today really as old as it is claimed without any sources? The earliest printed version of “Ain't gonna study war no more” is from 1918; while the notes to the song were published in 1902 as music to a love song by John J. Nolan.3 1 http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/grovemusic/spirituals,_hymns,_gospel_songs.htm 2 Thanks to Ulf Sandberg, Sweden, for the Pete Seeger quote.

Production was by Ralph Bass, Ozzie Cadena, Leroy Kirkland, Lee Magid, Fred Mendelsohn, Teddy Reig and Gus Statiras. The subsidiary Regent was extablished in 1948. The Dee Gee label was started in Detroit Michigan in 1951 by Dizzy Gillespie and Divid Usher. Dee Gee recorded jazz, R&B, and popular music. The label was acquired by Savoy records in the late 1950’s and moved to Newark NJ. The Signal label was formed in 1956 by Jules Colomby, Harold Goldberg and Don Schlitten in New York City. The label recorded jazz and was acquired by Savoy in the late 1950’s. There were no releases on Signal after being bought by Savoy. The Savoy and associated label discography was compiled using our record collections, Schwann Catalogs from 1949 to 1982, a Phono-Log from 1963. Some album numbers and all unissued album information is from “The Savoy Label Discography” by Michel Ruppli.
