Savoy and Regent Label Discography
Discography of the Savoy/Regent and Associated Labels Savoy was formed in Newark New Jersey in 1942 by Herman Lubinsky and Fred Mendelsohn. Lubinsky acquired Mendelsohn’s interest in June 1949. Mendelsohn continued as producer for years afterward. Savoy recorded jazz, R&B, blues, gospel and classical. The head of sales was Hy Siegel. Production was by Ralph Bass, Ozzie Cadena, Leroy Kirkland, Lee Magid, Fred Mendelsohn, Teddy Reig and Gus Statiras. The subsidiary Regent was extablished in 1948. Regent recorded the same types of music that Savoy did but later in its operation it became Savoy’s budget label. The Gospel label was formed in Newark NJ in 1958 and recorded and released gospel music. The Sharp label was formed in Newark NJ in 1959 and released R&B and gospel music. The Dee Gee label was started in Detroit Michigan in 1951 by Dizzy Gillespie and Divid Usher. Dee Gee recorded jazz, R&B, and popular music. The label was acquired by Savoy records in the late 1950’s and moved to Newark NJ. The Signal label was formed in 1956 by Jules Colomby, Harold Goldberg and Don Schlitten in New York City. The label recorded jazz and was acquired by Savoy in the late 1950’s. There were no releases on Signal after being bought by Savoy. The Savoy and associated label discography was compiled using our record collections, Schwann Catalogs from 1949 to 1982, a Phono-Log from 1963. Some album numbers and all unissued album information is from “The Savoy Label Discography” by Michel Ruppli. -

Original Compositions for Full Concert Band and Chorus Published in the United States
ORIGINAL COMPOSITIONS FOR FULL CONCERT BAND AND CHORUS PUBLISHED IN THE UNITED STATES by W. DAVID RICHARDSON (Under the Direction of Allen Crowell) ABSTRACT Compositions originally composed and published for full concert band and chorus seem to be plagued by a cyclic problem: the lack of information about the compositions discourages their performance, the lack of performances discourages their composition, the lack of composition discourages gathering information about the pieces. In an attempt to break this cycle, the document is an annotated bibliography of original compositions published in the United States for full concert band and SATB chorus. Each music publisher included in the Music Publishers Association of the United States of America (MPAUSA) directory was surveyed to discover compositions. After a review of literature, information is offered regarding specific delimitations for instrumentation and genre followed by survey procedures and data collection methods. Of the 683 publishers surveyed, 384 could not be reached, 274 did not have originally composed compositions for band and chorus, and 25 publishers held 42 originally composed works for full band and chorus. Each bibliography entry contains the title, composer, publisher, publication date, duration, movements/tempi, instrumentation, genre, text author/source, and full text for each piece meeting the delimitation criteria. This same information is listed for 10 significant works not quite meeting the delimitation criteria. Bévort 3 Feat. Mads Kjølby on Guitar
Photo by: Nanja Pontoppidan Bévort 3 feat. Mads Kjølby on guitar “Trio Temptations”, Gateway Music January 2014. Pernille Bévort: Tenor- and soprano saxophone; Mads Kjølby: guitar; Morten Ankarfeldt: Bass; Espen Laub von Lillienskjold: Drums A lot of the great tenor players have made the trio format a classic within jazz: Sonny Rollins, Joe Lovano and Joe Henderson, just to mention a few. It’s always a great challenge to perform with no chord instrument in the line-up, since the musicians can imply the chords in their playing in many ways and they need to communicate very carefully with each other. This very open format also gives the musicians a lot of possibilities to interpret and to change direction in the music, together and with short notice. This makes it a very fun “playground” to work within, and it is also interesting for the listener to follow the ride. “Trio Temptations” is the first Cd released with this Danish trio and it documents the work of 3 experienced jazz musicians. One can hear the close communication and the joyful, energetic collaboration between the 3 performers. They play with energy and curiosity - always ready to take a chance. On several occasions they have invited the wonderful guitar player Mads Kjølby as featured guest. This adds even more colours to the music. Band leader and saxophonist Pernille Bévort is an experienced musician on the Danish jazz scene. Apart from working with small ensembles, Bévort has performed with several professional Big Bands in Denmark during the last decade: The Ernie Wilkins Almost Big Band, The Danish Radio Big Band and the Aarhus Jazz Orchestra (Klüver’s Big Band) among others. -
John Jenkins
1 The ALTOSAX of JOHN JENKINS Solographer: Jan Evensmo Last update: May 4, 2020 2 Born: Chicago, Jan. 3, 1931 Died: July 12, 1993 Introduction: I have to admit I had never heard of John Jenkins until into my mature years, but then I found his personal style very interesting and he certainly deserves his solography and recognition. Through a brief period of seven months in 1957, he participated in several recording sessions with the cream of his contemporaries, and he was obviously considered a great talent. Why he quit in the middle of success is not known. History: Jenkins initially studied clarinet in high school but switched to saxophone after six months on the instrument. He played in jam sessions led by Joe Segal at Roosevelt College from 1949-1956. He played with Art Farmer in 1955 and led his own group at the Bee Hive in Chicago in December that year. In 1957 he played with Charlie Mingus and recorded two albums as a leader. He played as a sideman with Johnny Griffin, Donald Byrd, Hank Mobley, Paul Quinichette, Clifford Jordan, Sahib Shihab and Wilbur Ware in 1957 (not the late 1950s and early 1960s as stated), but essentially dropped out of music after 1962, aside from a few dates with Gloria Coleman. After leaving the jazz world he worked as a messenger in New York and dabbled in jewelry; he sold brass objects at street fairs in the 1970s. After 1983 he began practicing again and playing live on street corners; shortly before his death he played with Clifford Jordan (Wikipedia). -
