(Z'avez bien lu !) PERFORMED IDENTITIES: HEAVY METAL MUSICIANS BETWEEN 1984 AND 1991 Bradley C. Klypchak A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2007 Committee: Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Dr. John Makay Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Ron E. Shields Dr. Don McQuarie © 2007 Bradley C. Klypchak All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

Mötley Crüe Successfully Moves for Dismissal of Suit Involving Copyright in “Too Fast for Love” Album Artwork October 15, 2012 by Jeffrey A. Wakolbinger On October 9, 2012, Judge Grady, in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, dismissed a copyright-infringement action against rock band Mötley Crüe for lack of personal jurisdiction.1 The suit was brought by Ron Toma, who owns copyrights in certain photographs of band members Vince Neil, Nikki Sixx, Mick Mars, and Tommy Lee. One of those photographs was a close up of singer Vince Neil’s waist area, featuring a prominent studded belt buckle (the “Belt Buckle Image”). The photograph was taken by Michael Pinter in 1981 and used as the cover artwork for Mötley Crüe’s debut album, “Too Fast for Love.” Toma acquired the copyright in that image in 2008 through assignment. In September 2011, he filed a complaint in the Northern District of Illinois 1 Toma v. Motley Crue, Inc., No. 11 C 6766 (N.D. Ill. Oct. 9, 2012). These materials have been prepared by Pattishall, McAuliffe, Newbury, Hilliard & Geraldson LLP for general informational purposes only. They are not legal advice. They are not intended to create, and their receipt by you does not create, an attorney-client relationship. against Motley Crue, Inc., alleging that the defendants infringed his copyright in the Belt Buckle Image by projecting it on screen during live performances. He later amended the complaint to add the band’s touring company, Red White & Crue, Inc, as a defendant. The only specific example of alleged infringement in the complaint is a link to a YouTube video showing live footage from a concert in Las Vegas, during which the Belt Buckle Image was displayed on a screen while the band performed the title track of the album.

I thought in light of this that this month's TALKBACK SECTON would take a look back at some other Rockers who checked out way too young. Let's take a trip down memory lane: 12/1/93 - Singer: Ray Gillian dies from Aids related complications. While he never appeared on record with Black Sabbath he was briefly a member of Black Sabbath's touring band when he briefly replaced legendary Singer: Glenn Hughes in the band. Following his gig with Sabbath Gillen briefly worked w/Ex Thin Lizzy/Whitesnake Guitarist: John Sykes in Blue Murder but eventually Gillen left Blue Murder and formed BadLands w/Ex Ozzy Osbourne/Ratt Guitarist: Jake E. Lee. Badlands released two albums before Gillen decided to leave because of friction that developed between Lee and Gillen. After Ray Gillen's death BADLANDS released a 3rd and final album called DUSK which was an album's worth of material of unreleased studio outakes.

Four tattoo artists and eleven tattooed individuals were recruited and interviewed about the nature of the tattoo experience in order to determine the nature of the experience and its meaning to the participants. The participants were also interviewed about their knowledge of the social consequences involved with getting tattooed, and whether or not tattooing has become socially acceptable. Two tattoo artists did not complete the structured interviews, but each participated in an unstructured interview. Lastly, twelve participants were asked to free-list, sort, and scale their free-list of recreational activities on several attributes of leisure. The data from these instruments affirmed that the idea of leisure is subjective among the participants.

An Introduction to Body Modification as Deviance s we saw in the Introduction, deviance is a matter of definition.People make sense of the Abehavior, beliefs, and physical characteristics of others in a variety of ways so that those behaviors, beliefs, and characteristics become social objects; in other words, they are socially constructed.Which kinds of social objects they become, and to whom, will depend to a large extent on social context: In what contexts do these behaviors take place, how are these beliefs expressed, and who possesses these traits or characteristics? Along similar lines, other kinds of social objects—people’s hairdos, their clothes, the makeup they choose to wear, the size of their feet—are all bodily objects, but they become what they are to us through the same process of social definition. Thus, people learn to see heavy eye liner, skinny neckties, beehive hairdos, and polyester leisure suits as appropriate, attractive, silly, fun—or grotesquely outdated—and/or vintage aspects of the ways people can present themselves. In fact, most of us spend a considerable amount of time in any given week changing the ways we look.We might wear a t-shirt or a sweatshirt bearing our favorite team’s logo after a win but choose not to after a loss. We rarely wear the same out- fit when we go to a job interview as we do when lounging around the living room, watching television.

She belongs to a tribe of edgy women, and explores various aspects of self in relation to past and present narratives of fandom. Fandom is a subculture of fans that share a common interest, in this case heavy metal. Since 2014, I’ve framed my alternate identity in the art world. For this paper and my art and graduate work she is Rocket Queen [ET]. Her desire to relive becoming Youth Gone Wild1 is a desperate attempt to escape the inevitable: mortality. Rocket Queen and Rocket Queen [ET]- my persona name- is a fantasy character acting in a type of large social drama or my own rock drama where we can witness the rise and fall of rebellious women. Rocket Queen [ET] takes her adventures through a series of art making in the form of rock posters stapled up around the city of Calgary, Alberta as interventions, installations using concert lights and leather reconfigured to appear in the tradition of objects/wall paintings.

  • The Legacy Continues…
THE LEGACY CONTINUES… Vince Neil, the legendary front man of Mötley Crüe, is an international superstar, accomplished businessman and heartfelt philanthropist. His unmistakable voice leads some of the greatest rock songs of a generation in‐ cluding “Wild Side”, “Shout at the Devil,” “Home Sweet Home,” “Girls, Girls, Girls,” “Dr. Feelgood,” “Kickstart My Heart,” “Same Ol’ Situation,” and many others. Raised on the tough streets of Compton, California, Vince Neil fell in love with music as a child, developing a broad vocabulary that ranged from classic Motown to Hard Rock. As a teenager, he began performing with local bands and soon discovered both a passion for the stage and a natural talent as a singer and performer. He fronted the popular band Rock Candy before reuniting with high school buddy Tommy Lee in 1981, estab‐ lishing his spot in rock and roll history with the formation of Mötley Crüe. Mötley Crüe’s epic 34‐year run included countless multi‐platinum releases, more than 22 hit singles, 100 mil‐ lion albums sold and dozens of global tours with sold out arenas, inclusive of some of the largest venues in the world. The band completed “The Final Tour” on New Year’s Eve 2015, closing the book that told the story of their iconic career. Despite the Mötley Crüe departure from the rock world, however, Vince Neil shows no sign of slow down, continuing to carry on with the unending “The Legacy Continues Tour”. Neil continues to perform all the classic Mötley Crüe hits with select cuts from his three solo albums. Addi‐ tionally, this badass performer is working on new music, and has hinted about performing some of it during this tour: “I’ll say that we are recording some stuff for a new record this year,” he said in a Loudwire interview in January.
