The Mighty Wurlitzer

The Paramount Theatre is lucky to house Wurlitzer opus 1819, one of only about 40 theatre organs still playing in their original venues. Built to allow a single musician to create a “symphony” of sound, this intricate instrument was installed for the Paramount’s grand opening in 1928 and has flourished well beyond its expected lifespan.

Volunteers from the Puget Sound Theatre Organ Society (PSTOS) have been maintaining this beautiful Publix 1 organ for the past 50 years, and also work closely with STG to provide educational opportunities involving the organ and the silent films it was invented to accompany. In recent years, PSTOS has been conducting an extensive restoration of the organ to repair inevitable deterioration that has occurred during the nearly 90 years it has been in the theatre. The most recent phase of this process has been restoration of the console (the organ’s operator interface) and installation of a new digital control system, as a result of which the organ doesn’t look or sound appreciably different; it just works much better.

See this beautiful instrument in action during our special Show Divine at 9th & Pine event on May 21 at 7pm. In celebration of The Paramount’s 90th anniversary, this free organ concert will feature popular songs from 1928 performed by Tedde Gibson on the Mighty Wurlitzer and selected sing-along numbers led by local vocalists Taryn Darr and Ty Willis.

We are extremely grateful to those who have made contributions to this restoration project, making it possible for present and future generations to experience the magic of our Mighty Wurlitzer. To make your donation to ensure the health of the Paramount’s historic instrument, please visit the PSTOS website at PSTOS.org.

24 SEATTLE THEATRE GROUP STG at a Glance Historic Theatres Library As the steward of three historic theatres, STG places great emphasis on protecting the rich history of the Paramount, Moore and Neptune Theatres and the countless, diverse performances that have taken place on their stages. Because of this, STG created the Seattle Theatre Group Historic Theatres Library. Located on the fourth floor of the Paramount Theatre Office Tower adjacent to the theatre, the STG Historic Theaters Library is free and open to the public every Tuesday and Thursday from 10am to 3pm, as well as during all public and student tours of the Paramount.

The Library first opened its doors to the public on March 1, 2012, though the project began early in December 2010. It required the gathering, sorting, documenting, cataloging, and preserving of over 100 years of historical data. With tens of thousands of volunteer hours to date, this continues to be an on-going project.

The objective of STG’s Historic Theatres Library is three-fold: • To ensure historical material that exists of the three theatres is properly preserved and documented for future generations. • To provide an educational environment for youth that would offer an opportunity to learn and experience the remarkable history of the three theatres. • To offer the community a setting in which to become better acquainted with the history and thereby develop a deeper understanding of three of the few remaining historic theatres in Seattle.

Managed by our long-term volunteers, The Thrashers, and aided by several other dedicated volunteers, the library’s collection includes: materials about the performers that graced the stages over the many decades, documents depicting the peaks and valleys that these theatres had to endure, information on the visionaries responsible for these theatres, priceless memorabilia, and countless signed posters, among other historical resources.

The collection’s contents are searchable by and accessible to everyone, both at the library location in the Paramount building and on STG’s website. For more information about the Library and its services, please visit stgpresents.org/library.
