Printed in the U.S.A. letter from the chairman n my role as Chairman of the Board of the Palace Theater, I I have the pleasure of presiding over this beautiful and valued performing arts center and watching it grow each year. This year is particularly exciting, as it is our 15th Anniversary year! Fifteen years ago, a group of dedicated local and state leaders organized to restore and reopen this historic facility. After an extensive renovation, we welcomed our first audience to take in the visual splendors of the theater—and the mellifluous tones of Tony Bennett’s voice. Over the past fifteen years, we have welcomed close to two million people, held over 1900 events and presentations and served as the premier arts and cultural destination for the Greater Waterbury community and its surrounding towns. We have achieved a great deal in fifteen years, with still so much opportunity for growth ahead. In addition to serving as a performance venue, a cultural center, a reception facility for special events and a community gathering place, we also serve as the performance home for the Waterbury Arts Magnet School. It is a pleasure to watch the evolution of young performers as they work to hone their craft both on and off stage. And it is gratifying to see their names appear in our playbills, as they pursue careers in theater, and return to their home stage while on tour. The Palace is still growing, and we are so grateful to have the support of you, our valued patrons. Each time you attend a performance, or provide financial support, you help us further our mission of supporting the cultural and educational needs of our community. On behalf of the Board and the staff, I thank you, whether you are a 15-year supporter, or a first-time visitor. Welcome to the Palace! Sincerely, Peter J. Jacoby, MD, FACEP Chairman of the Board palace theater 7 8 palace theater letter from the ceo elcome to the Palace Theater, and the second half of our W2019-2020 season! We are pleased to present two exciting shows that celebrate the varied music and styles of the 1940s and 1960s. Bandstand, the 2017 Tony-Award winner for Choreography, takes us to 1945 America, with the fabulous sounds of Big Band and Swing underscoring the mixed emotions of a nation rebuilding itself in the post-World War II era. Sandy Hackett’s Rat Pack Show jumps forward two decades to bring the debonair glamour and musical elegance of the famed Rat Pack entertainers to our historic stage—where original Rat Pack member Frank Sinatra once performed! As we celebrate the storied musical past with these two outstanding performances, we also continue to celebrate our own history and milestone 15th Anniversary year, so we hope that you will join us at our Celebrate 15 year-end party on Friday, May 15! This annual event (last year known as Palace 10.4 ) fills each space of our beautiful theater with live entertainment, dancing, delicious food and beverages, games and more. It promises to be a night to remember! As we mark this special 15th Anniversary, we also have a unique opportunity to share: by joining at the new Signature Sponsor level, you will receive two tickets to our Celebrate 15 party, as well as the occasion to sign your name on our commemorative Celebrate 15 wall, as a permanent indication of your support! • Mary Poppins
MARY POPPINS Mary Poppins is a musical with music and lyrics by Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman, with additional music and lyrics by George Stiles and Anthony Drewe, and a book by Julian Fellowes. The musical is based on a series of children's books by P. L. Travers and the 1964 Disney film, and is a fusion of various elements from the two. Produced by Walt Disney Theatrical and Cameron Mackintosh, and directed by Richard Eyre with co-direction from Matthew Bourne who also acted as co-choreographer with Stephen Mear, the original West End production opened in December 2004 and received two Olivier Awards, one for Best Actress in a Musical and the other for Best Theatre Choreography. Following the success of the West End production, a Broadway production with a nearly identical creative team debuted on November 16, 2006 at the New Amsterdam Theatre. Broadway performer Ashley Brown was brought on board to play the title role, and Gavin Lee, who had originated the role of Bert in the West End production, reprised his role in the Broadway production. From the “Mary Poppins Education Series – The Magic of Mary”: “To create the magic used in Mary Poppins, the producers turned to celebrated theatrical illusionist Jim Steinmeyer – famous for his work with magicians, including David Copperfield and Siegfried & Roy - and for the flying effects, the legendary Flying by Foy, who have set new standards for flying on the Broadway stage for over 50 years.” Ashley Brown: “I wasn’t flown for the first time until about two weeks before we opened in New York…and it’s really become one of my favorite moments, because I can see the faces of the people for the first time, and just see how everybody is reacting.” Gavin Lee: “When I walk around the proscenium arch and tap dance and sing upside down, I can hear the audience every night, applauding, the kids gasping and pointing up there and it’s just a thrill to be able to do this magical sort of trick.” We’ve found a whole new spin… …if you reach for the heavens, you get the stars thrown in! We Love to See You Fly.
