Reacting to the medium’s growing significance, members of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) accepted that they had a wartime responsibility to maintain civilian morale. The CBC thus unequivocally supported the national cause throughout all levels of its organization. Its senior administrations and programmers directed the CBC’s efforts to aid the Canadian war effort. -

Dear Mr Turton, I saw your artich in the Italian Star and although not sure I can be of assistance with your project thought I shouH give you my material I was auached to No. 2 Commanfo Briga& which covered the Italian campaign. I was a Commando Signaller so was athched to various Comman&s on their respective actions. No 2 Briga& was comprised of two Army Commanfos and two Marine Comman&s. Most of the actions I saw was with Army Commandos although I was attached to No. 40 Marine Commando on some of their actions. I wasnot on the initial assault on Sicily but in the second wave that had saibd from the UK. I lan&d at Siracuse and immediately joined 3 Army Commando. There was a gradual folhw the Germans as they did a strategic withdrawal towards theltalian mainland there were minor skirmishes and eventually we arrived at the Straits of Messina for the ltalian invasion. Unlike the brave TV and Film soHiers there were many occasions when a POW lifestyb was a better option. This happened at Messina when our unit was given the task of aking out mainland coastal batteries on the mainland invasion, all that happened was we got coH as the gun crews had &ne a bunk when they realised what was going to happen. “Nurturing the Dream” By Susan Shelton Mural Imagery Key Top Section: The quotes reflect the overall theme of the mural: the importance of finding a balance between the work we do as students, workers, activists, and caregivers, and the time needed for reflection, nourishment of the spirit and restoration of strength. The large rectangular tiles on pillars A, B, C, D are inspired by Wangari Maathai’s “I Will be a Hummingbird” story. This folk tale poignantly illustrates the importance of doing one’s best, no matter how insignificant our efforts may feel at times, in the face of a seemingly insurmountable task. Pillars: The mural pillars showcase the conceptual and artistic participation of the students and staff of the Student Community Center, and other members of the university community, who were invited to contribute their suggestions for the imagery featured, and who also participated in painting the individual tiles. Remembrance Poppy
Attachment 2 Remembrance Poppy The red poppy, which became a national emblem of remembrance in 1920, is worn to honor and memorialize those who gave their lives to protect our country’s freedom. It’s historical roots date back to World War I, when a Lieutenant Colonel was overcome with sorrow after a battle in the poppy-covered Flanders Field in Belgium. The Colonel wrote a poem to channel his grief, called “In Flanders Fields”. This poem caught the eye of a professor at the University of Georgia, and she vowed to always wear a red poppy in remembrance of those who had been left behind. She lobbied to make the red poppy a national memorial symbol, and on September 27, 1920, the red poppy officially became the U.S. national emblem of remembrance. Red poppies are donned on Memorial Day and also on National Poppy Day. The American Legion Auxiliary - female relatives of wartime veterans, is the main group that raises money through the distribution of crepe-paper poppies. These poppies are handcrafted by veterans and provides them wages and a therapeutic outlet. Daniel Pellerin Supervisor: Serge Marc Durflinger 2016 During the Second World War, training was the Canadian Army’s longest sustained activity. Aside from isolated engagements at Hong Kong and Dieppe, the Canadians did not fight in a protracted campaign until the invasion of Sicily in July 1943. The years that Canadian infantry units spent training in the United Kingdom were formative in the history of the Canadian Army. Despite what much of the historical literature has suggested, training succeeded in making the Canadian infantry capable of succeeding in battle against German forces. Canadian infantry training showed a definite progression towards professionalism and away from a pervasive prewar mentality that the infantry was a largely unskilled arm and that training infantrymen did not require special expertise. From 1939 to 1941, Canadian infantry training suffered from problems ranging from equipment shortages to poor senior leadership. In late 1941, the Canadians were introduced to a new method of training called “battle drill,” which broke tactical manoeuvres into simple movements, encouraged initiative among junior leaders, and greatly boosted the men’s morale. -

Heart of Darkness & the Headhunter
Myths of Authority in Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness and Timothy Findley’s Headhunter Victor Kennedy Pedagoska Fakulteta Univerza v Mariboru 2000 Maribor, Slovenia Abstract Conrad’s Kurtz is often seen as the personification of the “darkness” Marlow discovers, a twentieth century icon of evil that has been used again and again, as in Coppola’s Apocalypse Now. Kurtz’s evil is his extreme authoritarianism in the name of civilization and “progress,” an evil particularly apt to the century that produced Hitler and Stalin. This view of Kurtz is rather simplistic, however, since Conrad uses him in a complex and ironic way: Marlow, and the reader, are both attracted and repelled by Kurtz. The danger resides in what Frank Kermode defined as the difference between myth and fiction: “Myth operates within the diagrams of ritual, which presupposes total and adequate explanations of things as they are and were; it is a sequence of radically unchangeable gestures. Fictions are for finding out, and they change as the needs of sense-making change.” It is tempting to read Kurtz and his later incarnations as mythical figures of internal evil, as Dracula is a mythical figure of external evil. Heart of Darkness is not, however, a “total and adequate explanation of things as they are,” but a “fiction. for finding out,” and the best modern versions of Kurtz follow this model. Timothy Findley is a Canadian novelist whose Headhunter (1993) is a postmodern parody of Heart of Darkness; the title is a pun on psychiatrists, a twist on the idiom “head shrinker,” and an allusion to the heads mounted on poles surrounding Kurtz’s compound in Heart of Darkness. -
