Canadian War Remembrance and the Ghosts of Ortona KILLING MATTERS: CANADIAN WAR REMEMBRANCE AND THE GHOSTS OF ORTONA David Ian Cosh A Dissertation Submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements For the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Program in Social Anthropology York University Toronto, Ontario November 2014 © David Ian Cosh 2014 ii Abstract This dissertation combines critical discourse analysis with person-centred ethnography to examine the dissonant relationships between Canadian war veterans' narratives and the national discourse of Canadian war remembrance. The dissertation analyses Canadian war remembrance as a ritualized discourse (named Remembrance) that is produced in commemorative rituals, symbols, poetry, monuments, pilgrimages, artwork, history-writing, political speeches, government documents, media reports, and the design of the Canadian War Museum. This Remembrance discourse foregrounds and valorizes the suffering of soldiers and makes the soldier's act of dying the central issue of war. In doing so, Remembrance suppresses the significance of the soldier's act of killing and attributes this orientational framework to veterans themselves, as if it is consistent with their experiences. The dissertation problematizes this Remembrance framing of war through an analysis of WWII veterans' narratives drawn from ethnographic fieldwork that was conducted in western Canada with 23 veterans of the WWII battle of Ortona, Italy. The fieldwork consisted of life-story interviews that focused on veterans' combat experiences, supplemented by archival research and a study of the Ortona Christmas reconciliation dinner with former enemy soldiers. Through psychoanalytically-informed discourse analysis, the narratives are interpreted in terms of hidden meanings and trauma signals associated with the issue of killing. The analysis shows that many of these veterans were strongly affected by killing even when they did not know if they had killed and even though most of them tried to suppress their dissonant affects. In sum, these Ortona veterans' narratives constitute dissonant acts of remembrance that unsettle the limited moral frame within which Canadians imagine war. iii The darkness crumbles away. There was a gradual folhw the Germans as they did a strategic withdrawal towards theltalian mainland there were minor skirmishes and eventually we arrived at the Straits of Messina for the ltalian invasion. Unlike the brave TV and Film soHiers there were many occasions when a POW lifestyb was a better option. This happened at Messina when our unit was given the task of aking out mainland coastal batteries on the mainland invasion, all that happened was we got coH as the gun crews had &ne a bunk when they realised what was going to happen.     Attachment 2 Remembrance Poppy The red poppy, which became a national emblem of remembrance in 1920, is worn to honor and memorialize those who gave their lives to protect our country’s freedom. It’s historical roots date back to World War I, when a Lieutenant Colonel was overcome with sorrow after a battle in the poppy-covered Flanders Field in Belgium. The Colonel wrote a poem to channel his grief, called “In Flanders Fields”. This poem caught the eye of a professor at the University of Georgia, and she vowed to always wear a red poppy in remembrance of those who had been left behind. She lobbied to make the red poppy a national memorial symbol, and on September 27, 1920, the red poppy officially became the U.S. national emblem of remembrance. Red poppies are donned on Memorial Day and also on National Poppy Day. The American Legion Auxiliary - female relatives of wartime veterans, is the main group that raises money through the distribution of crepe-paper poppies. These poppies are handcrafted by veterans and provides them wages and a therapeutic outlet. Daniel Pellerin Supervisor: Serge Marc Durflinger 2016 During the Second World War, training was the Canadian Army’s longest sustained activity. Aside from isolated engagements at Hong Kong and Dieppe, the Canadians did not fight in a protracted campaign until the invasion of Sicily in July 1943. The years that Canadian infantry units spent training in the United Kingdom were formative in the history of the Canadian Army. Despite what much of the historical literature has suggested, training succeeded in making the Canadian infantry capable of succeeding in battle against German forces. Canadian infantry training showed a definite progression towards professionalism and away from a pervasive prewar mentality that the infantry was a largely unskilled arm and that training infantrymen did not require special expertise. From 1939 to 1941, Canadian infantry training suffered from problems ranging from equipment shortages to poor senior leadership. In late 1941, the Canadians were introduced to a new method of training called “battle drill,” which broke tactical manoeuvres into simple movements, encouraged initiative among junior leaders, and greatly boosted the men’s morale.

Kurtz’s evil is his extreme authoritarianism in the name of civilization and “progress,” an evil particularly apt to the century that produced Hitler and Stalin. This view of Kurtz is rather simplistic, however, since Conrad uses him in a complex and ironic way: Marlow, and the reader, are both attracted and repelled by Kurtz. The danger resides in what Frank Kermode defined as the difference between myth and fiction: “Myth operates within the diagrams of ritual, which presupposes total and adequate explanations of things as they are and were; it is a sequence of radically unchangeable gestures. Fictions are for finding out, and they change as the needs of sense-making change.” It is tempting to read Kurtz and his later incarnations as mythical figures of internal evil, as Dracula is a mythical figure of external evil. Heart of Darkness is not, however, a “total and adequate explanation of things as they are,” but a “fiction. for finding out,” and the best modern versions of Kurtz follow this model. Timothy Findley is a Canadian novelist whose Headhunter (1993) is a postmodern parody of Heart of Darkness; the title is a pun on psychiatrists, a twist on the idiom “head shrinker,” and an allusion to the heads mounted on poles surrounding Kurtz’s compound in Heart of Darkness.
