Devon Mortimer Wills

The following list is aimed to be a tool for those researching Mortimer family connections in the County of Devon. All Devonshire wills were destroyed during the Blitz in World War II when the Exeter Probate Registry was destroyed, although lists and catalogues of wills in the registry were drawn up before the war. The Devon Wills project (DWP) recently made a survey of all surviving lists and abstracts that were made before World War II and all were catalogued with their source and reference. The writer has made an extract of all entries for the surname Mortimer and its variants in the DWP, including a single entry for each known will, prioritising the most complete or available source. When a will was listed in pre-war catalogues but neither copied nor abstracted, it is stated as only a listed entry (le). For the vast majority of families, most wills are simply listed entries, but due to the Mortimer surname’s historic connections, it generated significant interest and many more wills were reviewed compared to other families. One such important researcher was Burke, whose contributions constitute the Source College of Arms (CA). Charles Worthy included over 100 of these abstracts in his book Devonshire Wills (WOR) which is freely available online. Those abstracts that were not included (over 60 entries) can be consulted at the College of Arms, or ordered for a fee. It is hoped that all of these wills will one day be reviewed so the Mortimer family relationships can be ascertained with more confidence.
