Dept. of Physical Education and Sports, Pondicherry University, Puducherry, India Received 25th December, 2017; Accepted 10th January, 2018; Published Online 28th February, 2018 ABSTRACT Traditional sports and games cultivate local and regional customs strengthen the sense of national belongings. Locally or regionally rooted traditional games encourage exchange between district and regions and preserve a sense of cultural identity by providing marks of roots and reference. In this paper the author overview the extant traditional sports and games spread in the Tamil Nadu rural and urban places. The author brings out the procedure of play (rules and regulation) with scoring methods, type of games, and purpose of play of traditional indigenous games. All most the data were collected from the rural and urban people of 32 districts in Tamil Nadu, India. The researcher was divided into five regions of Tamil Nadu and the data collected from people who are played and come across in their lifestyle of traditional games. The methods used for collecting data by through interview, photos and live play demo. Totally 62 extant traditional sports are evaluated from the Tamil Nadu state, India. And found that, traditional sports and games played in the different regions in Tamil Nadu. This study concluded that, the traditional sports almost playing in the all over Tamil Nadu, it carries moral value and cultural heritage and develops the integrity among the people.     8. Social Services Education and Sports Tamil Nadu is one of the most advanced State in the field of Education. Education is the process by which a society transmits its accumulated knowledge skills and values from generation to another. Education inculcates certain values, principles and prepares children for a harmonious social life. One of the main objectives of the Government is to provide free and quality school Education along with integrated personality development creativity and moral integrity to all children. For which, it is necessary to improve the key education related indicators like reducing the dropout rate, increasing enrolment ratio etc., and to strengthen the infrastructure facilities. The State has recorded a literacy rate of 80.33% as per 2011 Population Census in which male and female literacy are 86.81% and 73.86% respectively. The important vision Tamil Nadu 2023 proposed by the government are (a) Tamil Nadu will be India’s leading State in social development and will have the highest Human Development Index (HDI) amongst all Indian states, (b) Tamil Nadu will provide the best infrastructure services in India in terms of universal access to Education with World Class Infrastructure. (c) to achieve Universal Secondary Education, increase enrolment in higher education including vocational education to over all 50% and d) setting up centres of Excellence across 11 identified areas. Elementary Education Elementary Education up to VIII std. is the foundation for achieving all- round and holistic development of children. Keeping this in view, the Government has been giving top priority for Universalisation of primary education.     Youth Welfare and Sports Development Department POLICY NOTE - 2004 – 2005 Demand No. 47 Chapter I Introduction The Youth Welfare and Sports Development Department aims at nurturing a generation of youth, sound in body and mind. The youth are the most valuable assets of a nation. The prosperity of a nation is measured largely by the quality and achievements of its youth. Academic excellence, proficiency in sports and games and an awareness of the needs of the society, propelling one to be service-minded, are essential to make a student a wholesome personality. Sports and games, NCC, NSS and the Scouts and Guides Movement provide the basic qualities for youth to blossom into responsible citizens. This year the development of sports has been given special emphasis at the instance of the Hon'ble Chief Minister and accordingly suitable budget allocation has been made. 1.1 Formation of Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu The Government of Tamil Nadu, in order to channellise the enthusiasm of the young people in sports activities, constituted the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu vide G.O.Ms.641, Education (Y1) Department, dated 18.7.92 by merging the erstwhile Department of Sports and Youth Services and Tamil Nadu State Sports Development Corporation. This is similar to the pattern of the Sports Authority of India. The Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu is the President of this Authority. The Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu, is the apex body, and implements all the policy decisions on sports and youth welfare activities of Government of Tamil Nadu in the State of Tamil Nadu.
