PSV v Liverpool FC MATCH PRESS KIT PSV Stadium, Eindhoven Tuesday, 12 September 2006 - 20:45CET Group C - Matchday 1

PSV Eindhoven may have never met Liverpool FC before but their coach certainly knows what it takes to get the better of the Group C favourites. Koeman was at the helm of the SL Benfica side that eliminated the Merseyside club from the UEFA Champions League last season, winning home and away to wrest the European crown from their grip in the last 16. Even the most ardent PSV fan would concede a repeat appears a tall order, but just one victory against the Reds would boost the Dutch champions' prospects in a section that also features Galatasaray SK and FC Girondins de Bordeaux.

Kuijt homecoming • Rafael Benítez's Liverpool look stronger than ever following some high-profile attacking reinforcements. As well as injecting lightning pace into his squad by signing Welsh forward Craig Bellamy and wingers Jermaine Pennant and Mark González, Benítez also recruited striker Dirk Kuijt. The recently crowned Dutch Player of the Year struck 71 goals in 101 league appearances for former club – including the only goal against PSV in last December.

• Liverpool started the season by defeating Chelsea FC in the Community Shield. Peter Crouch scored the winner and he also headed the goal that secured the Reds' place in the UEFA Champions League group stage, finding the net in the 1-1 draw with Maccabi Haifa FC in the third qualifying round second leg in the neutral venue of Kiev. Liverpool did have a scare in the home leg, falling behind before battling back to win 2-1 through goals from Bellamy and González.

Fresh start for PSV • For their part, PSV are starting afresh after a summer of change. Besides Koeman's arrival in place of the Russia-bound , several high-profile players have departed since they captured a second successive Dutch title in April. André Ooijer, Theo Lucius, Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink and Johan Vonlanthen all moved on.

• On the plus side, is still around to lend his considerable experience while the new faces include Mexican FIFA World Cup defender . PSV started the new season with a 3-1 loss to AFC Ajax in the Dutch Super Cup but will hope to have found their stride by the time Liverpool visit. One man who will know all about the English opposition is new signing defender , who swapped Liverpool for Eindhoven on transfer deadline day having moved to in January.

Mixed fortunes • PSV's home form against English clubs has been patchy. They have won just four of ten ties and none of their last four, including a 1-1 draw with Arsenal FC in 2004 - a game Pennant watched from the substitutes' bench.

• Liverpool have played just six matches against Dutch sides. The first, back in 1966/67, was a sobering 5-1 loss to AFC Ajax but they have since recorded three wins and two draws.

PSV

• Phillip Cocu is by far the most experienced player in the PSV squad with 114 appearances, and 15 goals, in UEFA club competition. requires three more games for his UEFA century, while is six away from 100.

• Cocu and Reiziger are approaching 75 games in the UEFA Champions League. The former has played 72 matches, while the latter has 71. However, Cocu will be suspended for the visit of Liverpool.

• Only Kluivert in the squad has passed double figures for goals in the UEFA Champions League with 29.

• Ecuador Edison Méndez marked his debut with two goals as PSV recovered from the shock of conceding an early Mohamed Messoudi goal to defeat Willem II 3-1 in Tilburg on Saturday. Méndez tapped in an equaliser from close range after Cocu's free-kick had been parried into his path and made it 2-1 from long range midway through the half. Jefferson Farfán then added a third from the penalty spot before half-time after Ibrahim Kargbo had handled in the area as Willem II were reduced to ten men.

• Summer signing Kromkamp, who has a five-year contract, cannot wait for the visit of the club he left in the summer. "I am proud to have played for Liverpool, I will never forget the FA Cup final," he said. "But now I am glad to be with PSV, and I have some things to tell the coach about Liverpool."

• PSV also signed striker Kluivert on a one-year contract. The leading scorer in Dutch national-team history, with 40 goals in 79 international matches, had seen his career stall at Newcastle United FC and Valencia CF. "The has changed a lot, but I think I will soon get used to it again," he said.

• On the final day of the transfer window PSV also acquired Brazilian attacker Diego Tardelli from São Paulo FC on a one-year loan deal, with a permanent option next summer. The club also bought Mexico defender Carlos Salcido on a four-year contract after he impressed at the 2006 FIFA World Cup.

• Goalkeeper Oscar Moens joined on a free transfer from Willem II on a two-year contract, replacing Edwin Zoetebier who left for NAC Breda, while 20-year-old Portugal Under-21 defender Manuel Da Costa signed from AS Nancy-Lorraine on a five-year contract. Striker Gerald Sibon left for 1. FC Nürnberg while Australian midfielder Lindsay Wilson agreed to terminate his contract.

• PSV did not have any internationals in that match, after selling Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink to Celtic FC and André Ooijer to Blackburn Rovers FC in the summer.

• Mika Väyrynen scored the third goal for Finland in their 3-1 win against Poland on 2 September, and then started the 1-1 draw against Portugal four days later.

played the whole match for Brazil in the 3-0 friendly win against Argentina on 3 September, while Alex remained on the bench. Both men then played the full 90 minutes in the 2-0 friendly win against Wales two days later.

• Manuel Da Costa scored the opener for Portugal's Under-21 on Tuesday in the 2-0 victory against Poland. Portugal will play Russia over two legs next month for a place in the 2007 finals in the Netherlands.

• Csaba Fehér started for Hungary in the 4-1 defeat by Norway and 3-1 victory against Bosnia-Herzegovina on 2 and 6 September respectively.

Liverpool

• Jerzy Dudek is the most experienced UEFA Champions League player in the squad, with 44 appearances in Europe's premier club competition.

• Liverpool lost 3-0 away to city rivals Everton FC in the 204th Merseyside derby on Saturday lunchtime. Tim Cahill and two goals by Andy Johnson put paid to Rafael Benítez's hopes of a second win in their fourth league fixture of the season. The manager had left out Craig Bellamy from his 16-man squad, with Crouch and Fowler starting in attack. The defeat left Liverpool with just four points from three fixtures.

• To make matters worse, John Arne Riise appeared to suffer a recurrence of his ankle injury in the closing stages having come on as a substitute just after the hour. He had only just returned to fitness after sustaining the problem on the first day of the season. One piece of positive news was the return to the starting lineup of Jamie Carragher and Mohamed Sissoko after both had missed the previous league fixture through injury.

• Benítez could not hide his disappointment at the final whistle. "We made a lot of mistakes, too many mistakes and our defending was really poor," he said. "Last season we kept a lot of clean sheets so we need to analyse why we are conceding goals so easily. We were too nice at times and put ourselves under pressure. We had 21 shots at goal but that counts for nothing if you don't take your chances. It is a very disappointing day for us."

• Before their meeting with their neighbours, Liverpool had played just two Premiership matches. In the first leage game of the season, Liverpool were held to a draw at newly-promoted Sheffield United FC, Fowler scoring from the penalty spot. They also fell behind in their next match at home against West Ham United FC before goals from Daniel Agger and Crouch gave Liverpool a 2-1 victory.

• Liverpool got their season off to a great start last month by defeating Chelsea FC 2-1 in the FA Community Shield with goals from Riise and Crouch.

He said: "If you are playing well in the Champions League then it is going to be at the back of the manager's mind to pick you. The more I can play in big Champions League matches, the better."

• Crouch scored twice in England's opening UEFA EURO 2008™ qualifying match on 2 September, a 5-0 home win against Andorra, while he also scored the only goal in the victory away to F.Y.R. Macedonia four days later. That took the striker's international tally to eleven goals in 14 matches.

Competition facts

• UEFA Champions League: Did you know?

Domestic champions: This season's competition features 16 domestic league winners from last season, but none of the eight groups comprising the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League features four champions. Only Group A features three league winners from the last campaign with England, Spain and Bulgaria represented by their champions, namely Chelsea FC, FC Barcelona and PFC Levski Sofia. The fourth club in the group, Werder Bremen, finished second in last season's Bundesliga, five points behind FC Bayern München. All of the remaining groups feature two domestic league winners with the exception of Group H, where Belgian side RSC Anderlecht are the only champions. Group rivals AEK Athens FC were runners-up in Greece, while LOSC Lille Métropole and AC Milan were classified in third place in Ligue 1 and Serie A respectively. Alongside 16 champions, there are nine runners-up and six third-placed finishers. Arsenal FC are the only club in the group stage to have finished in fourth place in their domestic league championship last season.

Consecutive participations: This season, Manchester United FC have extended their consecutive participation in the UEFA Champions League to eleven, a record in the competition. Bayern, PSV Eindhoven, Olympiacos CFP and Real Madrid CF are making their tenth consecutive appearances, one ahead of Arsenal.

Knockout streak: In qualifying for the 2005/06 knockout phase, Real Madrid CF tied Manchester United FC's record of nine consecutive seasons in advancing past the group stage. While United's streak came to an end last season, Madrid have featured in the knockout phase every time since the 1996/97 campaign. In those nine seasons, United won the competition once while they also advanced as far as the semi-finals twice, the quarter-finals four times and the first knockout round twice in the other eight seasons. Madrid, meanwhile, have won the competition three times in the last nine years while they advanced as far as the semi-finals twice and the quarter-finals twice. However, in the last two seasons their interest in the competition has ended at the first knockout round.

European return: Of all 32 clubs competing in this season's UEFA Champions League, only FC Spartak Moskva and FC Girondins de Bordeaux did not participate in a UEFA club competition during the 2005/06 season. Indeed, the two clubs are making their first appearance in UEFA club competition since the 2003/04 season.

Past masters: Four clubs competing in the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League were involved in the competition when it started during the 1992/93 season. AC Milan were beaten finalists (to Olympique de ), while PSV Eindhoven, PFC CSKA Moskva and FC Porto all participated in the group stage. In addition, AEK Athens FC and FC Barcelona were knocked out in the second round, the last hurdle to enter the group stage.

Long road for debutants: Five clubs have advanced to the group stage from the European Champion Clubs' Cup second qualifying round including this season's two debutants, FC København and PFC Levski Sofia. They are joined by FC Spartak Moskva, FC Dynamo Kyiv and FC Steaua Bucuresti as clubs who had to play four matches to claim their place in the group stage of the competition. A debutant has not won the competition since Juventus in 1995/96, the Italian side becoming the third club to complete this achievement following namely Olympique de Marseille (1992/93, first UEFA Champions League final) and AFC Ajax (1994/95).

No qualifiers: Of the 32 clubs involved in the group stage, only AS Roma and FC Girondins de Bordeaux have yet to play a qualifying round match in order to qualify for the UEFA Champions League. Roma are making their fourth appearance in the competition, while Bordeaux are involved for the second time.

Pedigree: Four of the former winners of the competition since it included a group stage element from the 1992/93 season are not participating in this season's UEFA Champions League, namely Olympique de Marseille (1992/93), AFC Ajax (1994/95), Juventus (1995/96) and BV Borussia Dortmund (1996/97). The last ten winners of the competition, Real Madrid CF (three), Manchester United FC, FC Bayern München, AC Milan, FC Porto, Liverpool FC and FC Barcelona are involved in this season's group stage. Only three winners from the last ten UEFA Cup finals are not involved in this season's UEFA Champions League group stage, namely Parma FC (1998/99), Feyenoord (2001/02) and Sevilla FC (2005/06). Liverpool and Porto have won both competitions in the past decade, while the remaining UEFA Cup winners in that time are FC Internazionale Mi
