For PSV Eindhoven and Liverpool FC it is the third time they have faced each other in the campaign with the Dutch champions hoping to reverse their fortunes against the English side over two matches in the group stage. • For PSV, winners of the European Champion Clubs' Cup in 1987/88, the tie gives them the chance to match their achievement of two years ago and advance to the semi-finals, progress that was surpassed by Liverpool who went all the way to the final where they triumphed in a penalty shoot-out victory against AC Milan. • The aggregate defeat of Arsenal FC in the first knockout round on 7 March earned Ronald Koeman's team plaudits for the resilience of their defending in London. Having taken an advantage in the first game through Edison Méndez's goal, PSV absorbed the setback of Alex's own goal which put Arsenal level on aggregate in the return and then struck back with a winner seven minutes from time when the Brazilian defender scored again - this time in the right net. • PSV's win two weeks before improved their home fortunes against English opposition which before then had shown no victories in their last five encounters, including the 0-0 draw with Liverpool which launched the Group C campaign. Prior to that they had been more successful, winning four and drawing one of six contests. Away from home they have registered three wins and two draws in a total of 12 visits to England. • Their home form in the competition is quite formidable – 12 wins and three draws in their last 17 outings, including qualifying ties. • When they were at this stage two years ago - the first time they had progressed so far in the UEFA Champions League - PSV, then managed by Guus Hiddink, saw off the challenge of Olympique Lyonnais in a penalty shoot-out after both games had ended 1-1. • Having defeated Arsenal in the last round, Koeman might well believe that lightning is about to strike twice. Last season, while with SL Benfica, he helped mastermind Manchester United FC's departure at the group stage and then put paid to Liverpool's hopes in the first knockout round, the Portuguese team winning 1-0 at Estádio da Luz and 2-0 at Anfield. However, following that Eidur Gudjohnsen strike, Liverpool refused to yield again and so advanced on away goals. Craig Bellamy and John Arne Riise had scored in Spain to put Rafael Benítez's men in control of the tie between the last two winners of the prestigious club prize. • In their third UEFA Champions League quarter-final, Liverpool will be looking to replicate the defensive resolution and organisation which brought them a 0-0 draw away to Juventus two years ago and a ticket to the next round after the home game had finished 2-1 in their favour. • Their earlier meetings with PSV in this campaign saw Liverpool win the home game 2-0 with second-half goals by Steven Gerrard - who had also struck the inside of a post in this season's first encounter - and Peter Crouch. It was one of only eight individual matches against Dutch opposition. • Away from home they have one victory in four attempts, at BV Vitesse in the 2002/03 UEFA Cup, and have suffered just one reverse, the 5-1 defeat at AFC Ajax in the 1966/67 European Cup second round - their heaviest ever reverse in UEFA competition. They are unbeaten at home, drawing one and winning the last three. • The victory at Camp Nou in February means the five-times European Cup winners have suffered only one defeat on their travels this season, the 3-2 reverse at Galatasaray SK on 5 December which came when they were already confirmed as section winners. After opening their campaign with a 0-0 draw in Eindhoven, they went on to win 1-0 at FC Girondins de Bordeaux. They have now only lost two of their last 15 away games in the competition, a run which includes last season's three qualifying rounds but not the 2004/05 final in Istanbul. • Liverpool have plenty of Dutch connections, most notably Boudewijn Zenden who won the title with PSV Eindhoven in the 1996/97 and was then named Dutch young footballer of the year. Dirk Kuyt played for PSV's old rivals Feyenoord before his summer switch to Anfield and young forward Jordy Brouwer made a similar move from AFC Ajax in January. • For PSV, Jan Kromkamp left Liverpool last summer after a six-month stay. Patrick Kluivert also has Premiership experience, having spent the 2004/05 campaign with Newcastle United FC while Michael Reiziger was at Middlesbrough FC the same season. • Kluivert, Reiziger and Phillip Cocu played at Anfield for the Netherlands in the EURO '96™ quarter-finals, with the former scoring in the 5-4 penalty shoot-out defeat by France. All three also played for Barcelona, and Kluivert scored, in the 3-1 group-stage victory at Liverpool in November 2001. • The return match will be played at Anfield on 11 April. The winners will play either Chelsea FC or Valencia CF in the semi-final. Match facts PSV • Five PSV players have featured in all eight UEFA Champions League matches to date: Heurelho Gomes, Alex, Timmy Simons, Edison Méndez and Arouna Koné. Reiziger has made 97 appearances, while Cocu has featured 119 times. • The Matchday 1 draw with Liverpool FC marked the UEFA Champions League debuts of both Carlos Salcido and Méndez. Diego Tardelli and Roy Beerens appeared for the first time two weeks later away to Bordeaux. • Manuel Da Costa made his UEFA Champions League debut in the 2-0 defeat of Galatasaray SK on Matchday 4. • Sun Xiang became the first Chinese player to appear in the UEFA Champions League with his arrival as a 66th-minute substitute in the first leg against Arsenal. He said: "The fact a Chinese guy can play in the Champions League is very big news in China. I have learned so much from my team-mates and coach - we are like a big family so I feel very good. Eindhoven is very quiet and comfortable which makes life easier and I like it." • Kluivert is the top UEFA Champions League scorer in the current PSV squad with 29 goals. No other player has reached double figures, although Cocu is on nine goals. • Kromkamp, Mika Väyrynen and Koné all scored their first goals in the competition in the group stage. Méndez opened his account in the first leg against Arsenal. • Koné and Alex are two of 40 players who have scored twice in the competition so far, with Kaká and Ruud van Nistelrooy, who is no longer involved, the leading scorers on six goals each. • Koné has set up two goals so far with Juninho Pernambucano, who is no longer involved, the competition's leading assist provider with five. • Koné has had eight shots on goal so far, eight fewer than Kaká who has had the most. Koné has also had six shots wide, with Thierry Henry having the most with 14. • Jefferson Farfán has been flagged offside 16 times, eight more than Koné and one behind Mohamed Tchite and Francesco Totti, who have been caught the most although the former is no longer involved in the competition. • Farfán has committed 23 fouls to date, one fewer than Brandão, who is no longer involved, and Michael Ballack, who are the most penalised players in this season's competition. The PSV forward has also been impeded eleven times, as has Méndez. • PSV have collected the lowest number of yellow cards of the sides in the quarter-finals with six - although they have also received one red card, for Michael Lamey on Matchday 2. • The Dutch side have committed 92 fouls so far, the lowest among the eight clubs left in the competition.
