PSV Eindhoven v Liverpool FC MATCH PRESS KIT PSV Stadium, Eindhoven Tuesday, 12 September 2006 - 20:45CET Group C - Matchday 1 PSV Eindhoven may have never met Liverpool FC before but their coach Ronald Koeman certainly knows what it takes to get the better of the Group C favourites. Koeman was at the helm of the SL Benfica side that eliminated the Merseyside club from the UEFA Champions League last season, winning home and away to wrest the European crown from their grip in the last 16. Even the most ardent PSV fan would concede a repeat appears a tall order, but just one victory against the Reds would boost the Dutch champions' prospects in a section that also features Galatasaray SK and FC Girondins de Bordeaux. Kuijt homecoming • Rafael Benítez's Liverpool look stronger than ever following some high-profile attacking reinforcements. As well as injecting lightning pace into his squad by signing Welsh forward Craig Bellamy and wingers Jermaine Pennant and Mark González, Benítez also recruited striker Dirk Kuijt. The recently crowned Dutch Player of the Year struck 71 goals in 101 league appearances for former club Feyenoord – including the only goal against PSV in Rotterdam last December. • Liverpool started the season by defeating Chelsea FC in the Community Shield. Peter Crouch scored the winner and he also headed the goal that secured the Reds' place in the UEFA Champions League group stage, finding the net in the 1-1 draw with Maccabi Haifa FC in the third qualifying round second leg in the neutral venue of Kiev. Liverpool did have a scare in the home leg, falling behind before battling back to win 2-1 through goals from Bellamy and González. Fresh start for PSV • For their part, PSV are starting afresh after a summer of change. Besides Koeman's arrival in place of the Russia-bound Guus Hiddink, several high-profile players have departed since they captured a second successive Dutch title in April. André Ooijer, Theo Lucius, Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink and Johan Vonlanthen all moved on. • On the plus side, Phillip Cocu is still around to lend his considerable experience while the new faces include Mexican FIFA World Cup defender Carlos Salcido. PSV started the new season with a 3-1 loss to AFC Ajax in the Dutch Super Cup but will hope to have found their stride by the time Liverpool visit. One man who will know all about the English opposition is new signing defender Jan Kromkamp, who swapped Liverpool for Eindhoven on transfer deadline day having moved to Anfield in January. Mixed fortunes • PSV's home form against English clubs has been patchy. They have won just four of ten ties and none of their last four, including a 1-1 draw with Arsenal FC in 2004 - a game Pennant watched from the substitutes' bench. • Liverpool have played just six matches against Dutch sides. The first, back in 1966/67, was a sobering 5-1 loss to AFC Ajax but they have since recorded three wins and two draws.
