At the IST (International School of Tianjin), the significance that UN Day or United Nations Day holds is unmatched, as this day celebrates what the school community stands for, namely “unity in diversity”. On Tuesday, 20 October, the IST celebrated its annual cultural extravaganza to commemorate UN Day. This year, the IST community focused their attention on the theme "Embracing our differences through a celebration of culture and diversity."

This theme was beautifully showcased through the large variety of colourful costumes donned and paraded by students, staff and parents, by the cultural show that featured spectacular performances from different countries, and by the outstanding food organized and cooked by the parents, demonstrating the best dishes from various cuisines around the world. Moreover, throughout the day, there were in-class theme- based learning activities for students, highlighting the notion that IST students develop the agency, skills and knowledge needed to be open-minded, principled and knowledgeable in maintaining the school as a unified, peaceful and inclusive institution.

IB Diploma students in the science stream may consider chemistry as one of the more challenging subjects as it involves lots of learning, understanding and memory retention. But chemistry teachers (such as IST’s inspiring Dr Darryl Davies) consider it one of the easier subjects in the science stream, provided students give it its due respect through concentration and consistent revision of the topics, and, of course, careful notetaking. The IST’s Grade 12 DP chemistry students have just started their latest unit in which they investigate acids and bases, one of the core topics of the IB DP chemistry programme. As an introduction to the topic, students performed an experiment investigating the properties of acids and bases. However, rather than simply being provided with a list of experiments to perform, students were given a number of chemicals (together with safety information) and asked to find trends and patterns in the reactions of acids and bases. The well-equipped and spacious IST chemistry lab was a hub of activity as our young chemists in their white lab coats were seen immersed in experimentation and observation with their beakers and test tubes and other equipment. It was yet another fine demonstration of the IB approach to teaching and learning achieved by designing a lesson to be more inquiry-based rather than prescriptive!
