MULKI SUNDER RAM SHETTY COLLEGE, SHIRVA UDUPI DISTRICT IQAC Report 2012-13 INTRODUCTION: Mulki Sunder Ram Shetty College, Shirva was founded in 1980 with a mission of providing higher education to the rural youth of the locality, majority of whom belong to socially and economically deprived sections of the Society. The College is ably managed by Vidyavardhaka Sangha (R), Shirva which has been serving for the cause of education in this rural area over a period of six decades. The mission of the College is to provide quality education at low cost to the rural youth. The College has completed 32 years of fruitful existence and successfully realized its mission of making higher education accessible to the students of weaker sections of the society and transforms them in to competent and responsible citizens. The College is located in a spacious campus with all infrastructural facilities like buildings, separate library block, Kreeda Bhavan, playground and required faculty. It reached this level due to the efforts of the Management and contributions of Alumni association and the public. The College is affiliated to Mangalore University and the UGC has conferred recognition under 2(f) and 12(B). The college applied for reaccreditation in the year 2009-10. The team made an intensive study and appreciated the commitments of management and the faculty. On the basis of reaccreditation, the NAAC has awarded ‘B’ Grade to our College. The Institution offers U.G. courses in Arts, Commerce and Business Management and has made remarkable progress in curricular and co- curricular activities. One of the students has secured 1 st rank in B.Com. in Mangalore University Examinations held in May 2011. The Management 2 has provided all the requirements needed for a peaceful and effective learning environment. We are committed to provide quality education, financial assistance to the deserving students and fulfill the vision and mission of the founder. The College has strength of more than 450 students. The tradition of securing good results in University Examinations has been maintained. The achievements of the students in extra-curricular activities have been impressive. Financial assistance in the form of scholarships is provided to many students. Training in soft skills, remedial classes, mentoring system and computer aided teaching methods are some of the initiatives adopted by the College to achieve academic excellence. Ramanada Shettigar, FDA. 3 The IQAC of the College, met on 3rd April 2012 to discuss the plan of action of the institution for the next year. In order to improve the quality of educational service, the following initiatives were discussed and approved for the academic year 2012-13: 1. To conduct UGC sponsored certificate course on regular basis. 2. To continue uniform dress and new identification cards for the students starting with first year B.A., B.Com. and B.B.M. Classes. 3. To begin admission process for first year degree classes within 10 days of the declaration of second year PUC results. 4. To increase the adoption of computer aided teaching methods by teachers and provide separate facility for Audio-Visual presentation. 5. To provide easy and quick access internet for the faculty and students. 6. To make teaching learning process more student-centric with active participation of students in class room discussions and presentation of seminars by the students. 7. To strengthen the mentoring system and conduct remedial classes for the benefit of slow learners. 8. To conduct training in Language Enhancement and Analytical Skills for final year students on regular basis and prepare them for campus recruitment and competitive examinations. 9. To conduct entrepreneurship and career guidance programmes for the benefit of final year students. 10. To provide more opportunities to students in sports activities, make optimum use of sports infrastructure and organize University level sports meets in the College 11. To computerize library services. 12. To computerize administration process. 13. To motivate faculty to take up minor and major research works and publish articles in journals. 4 14. To provide more facilities to inmates of women’s hostel. The IQAC of the college met on 30 th June 2012 at 2pm in the college auditorium. A review of the previous academic year was made. The programs and activities, results of the students were discussed. It is also decided to implement the programs and activities chalked out in the previous meeting. Implementations of action plans during the year 2012-13: - Various activities were conducted under different associations which were guided by respective staff advisors and student representatives. Various programs and activities were planned and implemented for the benefit of the students. Students` Council: - The inauguration of Student’s Council was held on 24 th July 2012. 55 Meritorious students and economically poor students were provided scholarship of Rs. 1000/- by Vinod and Dr. Chandrasekhar Shetty, Kaup foundation on this occasion. • Personal Empowerment Program It was conducted by the students council on 26 th July 2012 for the benefit of final year students by Sri S A Bhandarkar`s Team. Smt. Sulochana Kodavoor was the resource person. A program was found useful by the students as it dealt with removal of examination fears, eradication of inferiority complex, positive mental attitude and social value. • Sadhbhavana Day It was observed on 29 th August 2012; Prof Jagadeesh was the resource person and highlighted on Communal Harmony, Patriotism and National Integration. The students took the oath on Sadhbhavana. 5 Community Development Cell: • Anti Drug Awareness program: It was organized by the college in association with local police station and Primary Health Centre shirva. Sri K R Nayak was the guest of honor and Dr. Vasudev Upadhyaya was the resource person. • Career Guidance Program: It was arranged in the college on 27 th August 2012. Sri. Shridhara Hegde, senior librarian, St Mary`s College Shirva was the resource person. Cultural Association: • Aims at providing and facilitating a platform to the students to exhibit their talents. • Patriotic song and Bhavageetha song competition were connected in connection with Independence Day. • Independence Day was celebrated and Sri Harish Shetty, Secretary of Parent Teacher Association was the guest of honor and distributed the prizes. • Talents Day: Was organized on 25 th August 2012 and the students actively participated and exhibited their talents. Women`s Forum: • A talk was organized on the Empowerment of Women on 12 th September 2012. Smt. Jyothi Shetty Assistant Lecturer from Govindas College Suratkal was the resource person. Humanities Association: • A field work and Study of Inscriptions Program was organized at Udyavar on 8 th September 2012. Archeology students of the college participated in it. • A program was organized to commemorate the 150 th year of veteran freedom fighter Pandit Madan Mohan Malavia, on 13 th September 2012. 6 Prof Jayaram Shettigar of Milagres College Kalianpur was the resource person. Literary Association: • Elocution and essay competition were conducted on the eve of Independence Day. A program was conducted on 17 th September 2012 on Computer and Kannada. Prof. Bhavani Shankar Rao, from St Mary`s College Shirva was the resource person. • Students participated in literary competitions held at different colleges. • Srujana: - A wall magazine of the college provides an outlet to literary and artistic talent of our students. Commerce and Management Association: • A program was arranged in the college on 19 th July 2012 on Company Secretary Course. Sri Ullas Kamath President of Indian Institute of company Secretary was the resource person and provided information to the students. • Awareness on bank transactions was provided and students were motivated to open SB accounts in the nationalized banks. • Program was arranged in association with Unit Trust of India to provide awareness on PAN Card. Students were motivated and guided to secure pan cards. 220 students of our college applied for the card and secured it. NSS: • The NSS unit of the college conducted various useful program and activities. • The regular NSS activities were inaugurated by Smt. Sharada M Associate Professor in Hindi by planting a sapling in the campus. • The NSS work sessions were conducted in the campus as well as outside the campus through weekend Shramadan programs. 7 • An orientation program was conducted to the first year NSS volunteers by Miss. Laxmi lecturer in commerce and Miss. Shwetha Lecturer in commerce. • An interactive session on AIDS awareness program was organized. Sri Ravinandan Lecturer in Business Management and Miss Deepa, Lecturer in BBM were the resource persons. • Mr. Sunil 2 nd B.Com and Mr. Nithesh 2 nd BBM participated in the NSS leadership camp at Mangalore University. • Kum. Ashwini 3rd B.A and Mr. Deepak 3 rd BBM attended the University level NSS selection camp. • The annual special camp of the unit was conducted at Sri .Ayyanna Higher Primary School Padu Kalathur from 23 rd November to 29 th November 2012. • Volunteers actively participated in leveling the school campus with active cooperation of school administration and local youths. • A number of educational and cultural activities had been arranged to create awareness on personality development to the volunteers and public. Sports Association: The students of the college participated in various sports activities.
