Annual Report 2016-17 The college began in the year 1993 with a strength of 230 students. With the growth of the college over the years we have a strength of 813 students at present. There are 6 U.G courses namely, B.A.,B.Com.,B.SC., B.C.A., B.SW., and B.B.M and 6 P.G courses that is, M.Com., M.SW., M.A(Kan), M.A(Eco), M.A(Soc) and M.A(Eng). It is interesting to note that among the Govt.Colleges affiliated to Mangalore University our college was the first one to introduce P.G. Courses. Teaching and Non-Teaching staff: There are 26 permanent teachers and 68 guest lecturers in the college. HOD of English Department Prof.Prasad Rao M and HOD of History Department Prof.Suresh Rai K. have reported to the college after the completion of their Ph.D. studies under UGC- Faculty Improvement Programme. HOD of Political Science Department Prof.B. Jagadish Rao has been deputed as Principal of Dr G. Shankar Govt.Women’s First Grade College, Ajjarakadu, Udupi. HOD of Kannada Department Dr. Gananatha Shetty is deputed as state Liaison Officer for NSS Cell, Karnataka. In the college office there are 5 permanent staff, 5 are appointed by the CDC and 2 staff members appointed on contract basis. Distance Education Information Centre Prof.Chandrakant Bhat is working as Public Relation Officer to the University Information Centre. Dr. Duggappa Kajekar is serving as the Coordinator for Distance Education, Regional Study Center Udupi. Ms. Sandhya is serving as the office assistant. Results The passed out batches 0f 2015 – 16 has recorded the following results. An average result of 88.6% in the academic year 2015-16. B. Sc final secured 85%, B. A 88%,B.Com 70%,B.SW 100% and BCA 100%.In the post graduate departments M.A(Eng.) secured 100%, M.A(Kan) 100%, M.A(Eco) 100%, M.A(Soc) 100%, M.SW. 100%, and M.Com. 100%. Ms. Shruthi and Ms. Divya of M. Com department have bagged the second and fifth rank in the Mangalore University examinations, thereby raising the fame of the institution. Library books We have a central library as well as separate libraries for P.G. departments. There are 37,883 books and around 40 international, national, state and regional journals. During the year 3256 books were purchased. Scholarships 216 students were provided with scholarships totaling to Rs.7,84,279 in the year 2016-17. Sanchi Honnamma and Sir C.V. Raman scholarships of Rs. 13,000 were distributed to 5 students. Around 365 students who have applied for scholarships in the academic year are awaiting the scholarship. Rajiv Gandhi Scholarship 8 students from U.G as well as P.G departments have been sanctioned an amount of Rs.4 lakhs in the form of loan scholarship and have renewed it. Mr. James Vijay D’Souza of final year B. An and Mr. Ashwath G Shetty of final year B. Com received the Geetha Dayanand Shetty endowment scholarship. Grants Our college has received a total grant of Rs.4,05,800. Rs. 25,000 has been utilized by IQAC, Rs.1,00,000 by Science department and the remaining amount of Rs.2,80,800 has been used for different purposes. An amount of Rs.2 crores has been sanctioned under RUSA.Rs 65 lakhs have been released for converting the classrooms into smart classes in order to have online attendance, internet based learning and overall development of the students. Parent-Teacher Association The Parent-Teacher Association is functioning under the leadership of HOD of Commerce Prof.Mahesh Rao. The annual meeting of the Parent-Teacher Association was held on 27-01- 2017.The office bearers elected for the were Sri.Shekhar Baikady as president, Smt.Dayashini as vice-president, Sri S. Anand Mogaveera as joint secretary. Sri Pramod Madhwaraj minister in charge is the honorary president of the association. Co-Curricular activities The Credit Based Semester System adopted by Mangalore University gives weightage to co- curricular activities. Hence, the college has set up 44 different committees to coordinate the co- Curricular activities of the students. The student welfare council office bearers were elected unanimously. From U.G section Mr. Ganesh M(Final B.Com) and from the P.G. section Mr.Suhas Shetty(Final M.A Eng.) were elected as presidents, vice-presidents were Mr.Punith Raj (Final M.Com) and Mr.Abhilash N.K(Final B.A),secretaries were Mr.B.A.Sivakumar(Final M.A Kan)and Mr.Nishant Shetty(Final B.C.A).Joint secretaries were Ms.Rashmitha (Final M.A Soc) Mr.Ganesh Raj(Final M.A Eco)Ms.Savitha(Final BSW) and Mr.Vivek Shetty(Final B.Sc).Political Science HOD Prof.Manjunath and Dr.Venkatesh H.K of Kannada Department are the coordinators of the student welfare council.The inauguration of the student welfare council was held on 16/09/2016 in the gram panchayat hall. Honorable minister in charge of the district Shri Pramod Madhwaraj inaugurated the function and also released the college magazine SUDARSHANA. Principal of Poornaprajna College, Udupi Shri Jagadish Shetty was the chief speaker. On 19-11-2016 the “National Integration Week” was inaugurated in the college. Prof.Suresh Rai K addressed the students. On 17/8/2016 orientation program was organized for first year P. G students. Prof.Sripathi Kalluraya Finance Officer of Mangalore University was the chief guest.” On 26-11-2016 Minorities Welfare Day was celebrated.Mr. Dayananda P, Extension Officer of Udupi taluk Minorities and Backward Community spoke on the occasion. Women’s day and Environment Protection Day was also organized on the same day. Udupi First Division Additional Court’s Assistant Public Prosecutor Ms. Mumtaz addressed the students on the occasion. Students of both U.G and P.G have benefitted from talks given by various resource persons during various programmes organized in the college. Cultural Association Prof. Prasad Rao Head of the department of English and Prof.Geeta N are the coordinating the cultural activities of P.G and U.G departments respectively. Mr. Santosh (Final B. SW) and Ms. Deepa (Final B.com) are the cultural secretaries from U. G departments and Ms. Darshini M. G (Final M. SW) and Ms. Apoorva Nambiar (Final M. Com) are the cultural secretaries from P.G departments. Talents Day programme was held on 16th and 17th of September,2016. ZEE TV SARIGAMAPA Little Champ Master Gagan Goankar inaugurated the function. I am pleased to place before you the achievements of our students who have won many prizes in the inter college cultural competitions this year Ms. Vijetha Shetty has participated and won prizes in the following events. 2nd prize in District Level Essay Competition organized by Prasad Netralaya on 24/08/2016 . 1st prize in Essay Competition held on 27/07/2016 and Elocution Competition held on 17/11/2016 conducted by Karavali Writer’s Forum. 1st place in extempore speech held on 18/11/2016 in Udupi. 4th place in Elocution Competition held on 07/01/2017 conducted by Milagres College, Kallianpur. 2nd place in Elocution Competition held at Kodavoor. 1st place in Elocution Competition held at M.G.M College, Udupi. 1st place in District Level Elocution Competition on the theme Importance of Elections organized by Red Cross Wing and Sports Department, Udupi. Ms. Vijetha Shetty was the president of Students seminar in the programme TULUMINADANA organized by Karnataka Tulu Koota(R) on 15/10/2016. She has been awarded the Dr. Shivaram Karanth award carrying a cash prize of Rs. 3,000/- for her multifaceted talents by YUVACHAITANYA cultural association, Karkala on 01/01/2016. She also received KARNATAKA RATNA award on 11/02/2017 in Akhila Karnataka Beladingala Sahitya Sammelana. Suhas Shetty from II M.A(English) and Santosh from I M.A(Kan) bagged the first and third place respectively on 21/09/2016 in the Tulu Yuva Prathibha Sammelana held at Milagres College, Kallianpur. In the Yuva Chaitanya Cultural Fest held at Karkal on 01/10/2016 our college team won the prize moreover, Mr. Suhas Shetty from II M.A(English) won the prize for Best Master of Ceremony. Our college cultural team won the third place in TULUMINADINA held at M.G.M College and in District Level Essay Competition on 24/08/16. Shilpa Shetty (II BSW) won the second place in the Youth Festival Elocution Competition on 15/01/2017 held at Udupi and participated in Elocution Competition held at MGM College. Vikas (I M. Com) won the third place in the Tulu Quiz Competition held at Milagres College, Kallianpur. All the winners of talents day competitions held in the college will be awarded prizes during this function. Career guidance cell/Placement Cell The Placement Cell of our college is functioning under the leadership of Prof.Murali K HOD Dept. of Mathematics. Our students have benefited from many Udyog Mela’s and Campus Selections’ in many places.5 students from B.Sc. and BCA and 3 students from B.Com have been selected by different companies.18 students were selected in the campus selection organized in our college by ICICI Bank.42 students from M.Com, 16 students from M.SW ,2 students from MA(Sociology),4 students from MA(Kan),6 students from MA(Eng),12 students from MA(Eco)of the academic year 2015-16 have already been placed in various companies.A special training was organized for the Final year students in “Resume Writing and Facing Interview”. NSS and Youth Red Cross There are two NSS wings functioning in the college headed by Prof.Raviraj S and Prof.Manjunatha as the NSS officers.
