Born in Stourbridge, Worcestershire, he was educated to be a civil engineer and in 1883 became an associate member of the Institution of Civil Engineers. In that same year he entered the South Kensington School of Art and also worked at the life classes of Professor Fred Brown at the Westminster School of Art. He became a print maker and was largely responsible for reviving the practices of mezzotint and aquatint engraving. Praised and encouraged by Ruskin and a great admirer of Turner, his etchings and mezzotints from Turner’s Liber Studiorum were among his earlier successes. He also reproduced in fine and sensitive mezzotints several pictures by George Frederick Watts, David Cox and Peter de Wint. He became head of the Engraving School at the Royal College of Art and was elected to the Roya Society of Painter-Etchers ad Engravers in 1885. In 1910 he succeeded Sir Seymour Haden as president. His work as a watercolour painter was recognized in 1917 when he was elected a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours. He lived in Brook Green, London. Print REbels celebrates the 200th anniversary of the birth of the founder and first President of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers, Sir Francis Seymour Haden. A prestigious collection of works has been brought together to show prints produced by Haden along with those who inspired him such as Rembrandt and Dürer, and his contemporaries, including Samuel Palmer and JAM Whistler. In 1880, the time the RE was founded, artists such as Haden, Palmer and Whistler were considered revolutionary in their championing of printmaking as a creative medium. In mid-Victorian England, printmaking was seen primarily as a means to make reproductions of artworks, and many printmakers only made a living working as a copyist. These printmakers were not eligible for membership of The Royal Academy, as creative printmaking was not recognised as an art form on the same level as painting and sculpture. It was this that prompted Haden to rebel against this and form a new society, the RE. Haden and Whistler are credited with instigating the Etching Revival, an art movement which lasted 75 years. The RE has always been closely connected with the RA, with several Royal Academicians being founding members of the RE along with Seymour Haden, and the 2nd 3rd and 4th RE Presidents being also RAs.

Sherwin La Galerie Notre Dame, Paris, is one of several views Meryon created depicting Notre Dame de Paris. Meryon was an admirer of the writings of Edgar Allan Poe and it is from Poe’s poem “The Raven” (1845) that the artist takes the motif of the raven for this work. Meryon picks the vantage point of the interior of the gallery in Notre Dame looking out. The interior space is closed-in yet perforated, and the black birds add a certain malevolent presence. Victor Hugo’s novel, Notre Dame de Paris (1831), published in English as The Hunchback o f Notre Dame, renewed interest in Paris’s Gothic Cathedral.

However, I soon picked up that the ‘black and white’ section of STISA had been exceptionally highly regarded, particularly in the early 1930s, and so thought it would be worth paying a visit to the British Museum and the V & A to view their collections. As the tissue paper was peeled back to reveal gem after gem by printmakers such as Frank Brangwyn, Sydney Lee, Alfred Hartley, Job Nixon, Raymond Ray-Jones, Saloman Van Abbé, etc., my attitude towards ‘black and white’ work was transformed completely. Of all the superb prints that I was shown that day, one stood out - the etched self portrait of Raymond Ray-Jones - and I made certain when I designed Creating A Splash that it received a full page spread. However, I could find very little information about the artist, other than he had moved to Cornwall in 1933 but had only remained a member of STISA for a short period. Then, at the private view of the Doncaster leg of the Creating A Splash tour, I was approached by Paul Sanderson, who had connections with the artist’s family, and who had done a considerable amount of research into Ray-Jones’ life and career.

The Art of Etching Gallery Muirhead Bone Scottish, 1876 – 1953 Constantinople, 1934 etching and drypoint Museum Purchase Reading Public Museum, Reading, Pennsylvania 1968.461.1 This view of Constantinople, which shows the Süleymaniye Mosque, was completed in November, 1934 after a drawing Bone had executed in 1929. Bone, born in 1876 Glasgow, Scotland, had first trained as an architect before turning to art, specializing in watercolor and printmaking. Bone trained at the Glasgow School of Art before moving to London in 1901. There he continued to study alongside artists such as William Strang and Alphonse Legros, eventually joining the New English Art Club. Bone traveled and exhibited extensively, including in London and New York. Joseph Pennell American, 1857 – 1926 Culebra Cut from the Vista d'Oro Panama Canal Series, 1912 etching Museum Purchase Reading Public Museum, Reading, Pennsylvania 1928.56.1 Joseph Pennell, born in Philadelphia, was best known for his prints of historic landmarks used in books and travel articles. He and his wife, writer Elizabeth Robins Pennell, published numerous books including The Life of James McNeill Whistler (1908), who was a close friend of the couple. Shortly before the completion of the canal in 1914, Pennell created a portfolio in 1912 titled Building of the Panama Canal. In it, the artist noted how impressed he was with the colossal scale of the construction, but he was equally impressed by the commitment of the workers who, he observed, “worked as if to work was neither a hardship nor an imposition.

T HE ART l:NST!TtJTE OF CHICAGO AP RIL I TO APRIL 27,1922 ~ - INTRODUCTION It is a little over a century since the art of original etching began to be revived in the British Isles. Crome and one or two others in England, Wilkie and Andrew Geddes in Scotland, etched a certain number of original designs on copper in the early years of the nineteenth century, using the medium as it had but rarely been used since the time of Rembrandt and Ostade, that is, as a means of self-expression in this particular medium and not merely as a means of reproducing a design or a picture already made. Etching has its own idiom, an idiom of peculiar charm but of definite limitations. The "needle"-the pointed steel which is the etcher's tool-removes the varnish, with which the plate is covered, from the lines it traces; the acid bath in which the plate is plunged bites into the copper just along those lines; and in the resulting prints from this bitten tracery the line has a particular character,-even, and not modulated by the pres- sure or movement of the hand, nor the tapering away at end like the stroke of pencil and chalk. At the same time the etcher's hand can move freely and lightly. His needle does not plough into the copper, unlike the engraver's burin, which has to furrow the resisting metal; therefore, a certain spontaneous- ness of treatment, as of a sketcher keen on the essentials of his theme, is natural in an etching.

A f1ne draughtsman, his etchings frequently reflect his interest in Durer. He studied art at the Leicester School of Art and the Royal College of Art, was a Rome Scholar in 1922, was tutor of engraving at the R.C.A. 1927-1944 and professor in the Department of Graphic Design 1948-1955. BAYES, ALFRED (1832-1909} A genre painter and sometime etcher. He exh1b1ted at leading galleries from 1858, chiefly at the Royal Academy. Elected to Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers in 1900. Lived in London. CROME, JOHN (1768-1821} A landscape painter and sometime etcher and founder of the Norwich Schoolr in quality and quantity of work the most important regional school of the century. He interpreted the East Anglian landscape in an idiom close to Hobbemma and the Dutch 17th century masters. He was much influenced by paintings by Gainsborough, Wilson, Hobbemma and Cuyp from the collection of Thomas Havery, a local amateur painter. Around 1790, he received assistance from Sir William Beechey. He started an art school in his own house in 1801 and founded the Norwich Society of Artists in 1803, with whom he exhibited regularly. His landscape etchings were published posthumously under the title Norfolk Picturesque Scenery (1834}. ' DODD, FRANCIS (1874-1949} Painter of landscapes, portraits and genre, 1n 011 and watercolour, and etcher--specially noteworthy for his drypoint portraits, although he also did excellent work in architectural and landscape subjects.
