  • Candide and Other Stories (Oxford World's Classics)
oxford world’ s classics CANDIDE and other stories Voltaire was the assumed name of François-Marie Arouet (1694– 1778). Born into a well-to-do Parisian family, he was educated at the leading Jesuit college in Paris. Having refused to follow his father and elder brother into the legal profession he soon won widespread acclaim for Œdipe (1718), the first of some twenty-seven tragedies which he continued to write until the end of his life. His national epic La Henriade (1723) confirmed his reputation as the leading French literary figure of his generation. Following a quarrel with the worthless but influential aristocrat, the Chevalier de Rohan, he was forced into exile in England. This period (1726–8) was particularly formative, and his Letters concern- ing the English Nation (1733) constitute the first major expression of Voltaire’s deism and his subsequent lifelong opposition to religious and political oppression. Following the happy years (1734–43) spent at Cirey with his mistress Mme du Châtelet in the shared pursuit of several intellectual enthusiasms, notably the work of Isaac Newton, he enjoyed a brief interval of favour at court during which he was appointed Historiographer to the King. After the death of Mme du Châtelet in 1749 he finally accepted an invitation to the court of Frederick of Prussia, but left in 1753 when life with this particular enlightened despot became intolerable. In 1755, after temporary sojourn in Colmar, he settled at Les Délices on the outskirts of Geneva. He then moved to nearby Ferney in 1759, the year Candide was published.

Connected Isolation: Screens, Mobility, and Globalized Media Culture A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF THE GRADUATE SCHOOL OF THE UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA BY Stephen Francis Groening IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Keya Ganguly, Adviser December 2008 © Stephen Francis Groening 2008 i Acknowledgements When one embarks on an academic project on contemporary culture, invariably everyone has an opinion. So I should mention at the outset that I have gained from the numerous conversations I have had with strangers on airplanes, in hotel elevators, the cable repair guy, house painters, the staff of restaurants and coffeehouses – in short anyone who ever asked me, “What do you do?” in the past three years. This is hardly a cooperative project; nonetheless, I could not have completed it or embarked upon it without the assistance and hard work of others. I wrote the first chapter, “We See Ourselves as Others See Us” with the financial assistance of the University of Minnesota’s Harold Leonard Memorial Film Fellowship and Grant, which allowed me to travel to Washington, D.C. and perform archival research at the National Museum of American History Archives Center and the Library of Congress. I am enormously grateful to the staff at the Archives Center who assisted me: Wendy Shay, Reuben M. Jackson, Kay Peterson, and Susan B. Strange. I am also grateful to Rosemary C. Hanes, who helped my research at the Library of Congress. I presented a version of that chapter at the 2007 “Media History: What Are the Issues?” conference and benefited enormously from the conversations that followed.

Contents: 2:Welcome 3-6:Hot Topic 7-16:Creative Writing Corner 17-18:Desert Island Discs 19: A Special Thankyou It’s been a wild and wet start to the year! 1 Welcome Hello and welcome to the fantastic fourth edition. We have a wide variety of creative writing from poetry to personal writing. In addition, we have a selection of articles about Christmas. It may seem ages ago but read them through and make your own decision. Is Christmas overrated? As always, if you would like to contribute come and meet the team – now on a Tuesday in Room 36A. Enjoy! The Test Valley Telegraph Team 2 Is Christmas Overrated? Ladies and gentlemen, I am here in front of you today to speak to you about the idea that Christmas is over-rated. Have you ever really thought about Christmas day itself? I bet that if you did all you would see is a stressful, crazy and manic time! I agree that Christmas is nice because some families are all together. There is the fact that some families are not all together, for a variety of different reasons, such as: some parents are in the military and are away over Christmas, some are without a family or have parents who have separated. Christmas has been around for centuries. When it first came around it was an act of kindness. A man called Saint Nicholas would give money to poor families every year so they could buy or do things they needed, but over the time more and more traditions from different places have been added, making it over-rated.

  • Tubular Bells Iii
The Source Of Secrets Tuono. Vento. Pioggia.
