Are we going back or are we really moving towards to the new Agenda 2030, in the sense that we are able as a global community to spread out solutions through great leadership and new forms of power in the next ten years?”

Ten Years to Transform Our World

Responsible Leadership must be value-based. And the common framework we employ to ensure that everyone is pulling in the same direction is the UN 2030 Agenda. Adopted in 2015, the 17 Sustainable Development Goals lay out a roadmap to build a just and peaceful world by 2030. Now, with just 10 years to go, we must intensify efforts to bring governments, civil society, businesses, and individuals together. Visit the United Nation’s “We are at a critical time in history. Climate change is Sustainable having an impact. We have an economic system that up to Development now has rewarded profit and disregarded sustainability. We Goals website: have a real need to act.” This is the claim from Dr. Frank Niederländer, Member of the Board at the BMW Foundation, regarding what the UN is calling as the Decade of Action, and it involves accelerating sustainable solutions to all the world’s biggest challenges, from poverty and gender disparity to financial inequality and climate change. The personal transformation of group members during the formats is ensured by a careful selection of participants, achieving a rich diversity. These attendees can then share their influence and power within their spheres and contexts, whether public, private, or third sector.

Our programs put personal leadership experience and encounters center stage: it does so through an innovative format design and combination of methodologies, the diversity of the participants, and the selection of unique locations. Global Table

New Coalitions for Resilient Societies

Our third Global Table cycle continued and concluded in 2019 with its last two programs in the United States and France.

We believe sustainable solutions towards the UN 2030 Agenda are only possible if people engage with other perspectives, those from entrepreneurs and scientists to activists to journalists and artists. To that end, the BMW Foundation’s Global Table series is an open, multisector dialogue bringing leaders from near and far afield to develop solutions to our time’s complex challenges. How can we stabilize fragile societies?

How can societies emerge from violent conflict? How can marginalized communities be included? Questions like these are the food on our Tables. Participants mutually listen and learn, enjoying an open discussion transcending regional, professional, BMW Foundation ethnic, and cultural boundaries. Bridge over Troubled Water

Overcoming differences to build mutual understanding is a long-term project – and that’s exactly what Zukunftsbrücke: Chinese-German Young Professional Campus has been up to for eight years. The exchange is organized in close cooperation with Mercator Foundation and the All China Youth Federation.

Each year, 15 Chinese and 15 German participants receive the opportunity for further professional and intercultural training over a week, focused on exchanging ideas on an equal footing. After the program, participants return home with a fresh perspective and renewed energy to tackle these issues with their own networks. As the Foundation’s chairman Dr. Michael Schaefer says, “Building trust between very different cultures and civilizations is an essential precondition to solve global challenges.”

2019’s meeting was entitled “Achieving the 2030 Agenda – Rethinking Global Partnerships for Sustainable Development.” BMW Foundation Herbert Quandt | Annual Report 2019 21

Connect We cultivate a global network of Responsible Leaders to empower Building a worldwide each other, exchange ideas, pool community of purpose resources, and collaborate towards That’s the vision behind the connections we foster in our BMW Foundation Herbert Quandt Responsible a greater positive impact. Leaders Network. Among more than 1,800 Responsible Leaders in over 100 countries, each member commits to playing an active role in shaping the network. This includes connecting with others, sharing experiences and knowledge, cooperating and co-creating. Our role is as a facilitator and platform; a medium through which such relationships can develop, grow, and lead to effective change.

These connections, when built on shared values, action, and frameworks, can evolve into a community of purpose, driven by and working for the 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

In recent years we have been consolidating and energizing our Regional Networks, with the aim of making them self-sufficient, as well as sowing seeds for the activation of other regions. The pilot of our Impact Analysis this year is enabling us to evaluate our impact and continually improve, as we stretch our efforts into fresh corners of the world. A major highlight for our Responsible Leaders Network in 2019 was the 6th World Responsible Leaders Forum, which took place in December in the spectacular location of Mérida, Mexico. We were thrilled to welcome 310 Responsible Leaders there and over three and a half days create a strong sense of a community of purpose striving towards the same goals.

We also developed and launched our network app Connect.RL, allowing Responsible Leaders to discover, reach, and contact other members of the network worldwide, enhancing their participation. BMW Foundation Herbert Quandt | Annual Report 2019 23

6th World Responsible Leaders Forum

Connecting our Community Mérida, 5 – 8 December

The Yucatán Peninsula, at the center of the Americas and formerly inhabited by the Mayan civilization, offers a rich and complex history. More importantly, it’s home to a thriving, diverse society forging creative solutions to today’s challenges. An apt setting for our 6th World Responsible Leaders Forum.

In December 2019, Responsible Leaders from all corners of the world crossed geographical, cultural, and sectoral boundaries to come together. One core objective was to lay the groundwork for collective and individual action towards the UN 2030 Agenda, through building a close community of purpose. And over three and a half days, these individuals, all impactful leaders in their own sphere, shared experience and knowledge, co-created, and connected to sow the seeds of just such a community.

Beyond Finance to the Creation of Impactful Stakeholders Networks

By working towards a fundamental shift in our economic and financial systems, we aim to create a sustainable future for all life on this planet, in line with the UN 2030 Agenda. Since 2018 the work area INVEST has seen a dynamic evolution and has become one of the central pillars of the BMW Foundation Herbert Quandt’s activities. Building on our past activities, we have both refined our focus and broadened our approach to a holistic understanding: We see INVEST as an attitude to work towards a sustainable future rather than a technical financing activity.

First, this has involved building our competence in impact and sustainable investing so that we can deploy our endowment in a more impactful way. Our development here has paralleled a growing momentum worldwide, which we have attempted to Invest both build on and drive as a model for others. Second, driving change through entrepreneurial approaches has long been a part of the Foundation’s work. Through our Responsible Leaders Network, we have learned about the potential of entrepreneurs and founders as key contributors to change.

In order to support the mindset of Responsible Leadership and impact technologies in the startup scene, we, for example, started a cooperation with the founders conference Bits & Pretzels. In 2020, we will also launch the BMW Foundation Accelerator program RESPOND, operated by UnternehmerTUM, to accelerate responsible leadership.

The Fund Through the Eberhard von Kuenheim Fund (EKF), a 20-million-euro vehicle dedicated to impact investments, we annually invest parts of our endowment in impact opportunities. These investments intend to make a direct, measurable contribution to achieving the UN SDGs as well as to helping build and professionalize the international impact investment ecosystem.

In 2019, the EKF subscribed to new funds that perfectly align with the BMW Foundation’s impact investment strategy:

One of the investments provides values-aligned capital to support purpose-driven businesses in transitioning to steward-ownership. Through this investment, we promote an alternative approach within the existing financial and economic system. Another investment of the BMW Foundation provides targeted support to impact entrepreneurship in one of Europe’s fastest-growing startup hotspots. Through our commitment, we have been able to mobilize additional private-sector capital, significantly growing our network in Europe.
