SAINT LUKE the EVANGELIST GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH May 15, 2016 SAINT LUKE THE EVANGELIST GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH may 15, 2016 the sunday of the myrrh-bearers oday we commemorate the Holy Myrrh-bearing women Sts Mary Magdalene (July 22), Mary the Twife of Clopas, Joanna (June 27), Salome, mother of the sons of Zebedee (August 3), Martha and Mary, sisters of Lazarus (June 4). Also St Joseph of Arimathea (July 31), and Nicodemus. St Pachomios the Great was both a model of desert dwelling, and with Sts Anthony the Great (Janu- ary 17), Macarius the Great (January 19), and Euthymius the Great (January 20), a founder of the cenobitic monastic life in Egypt. St Pachomios was born in the third century in the Thebaid (Upper Egypt). His parents were pagans who gave him an excellent secular education. From his youth he had a good character, and he was pru- dent and sensible. When Pachomios reached the age of twenty, he was called up to serve in the army of the emperor Constantine (apparently, in the year 315). They put the new conscripts in a city prison guarded by soldiers. The local Christians fed the soldiers and took care of them. When the young man learned that these people acted this way because of their love for God, fulfill- ing His commandment to love their neighbor, this made a deep impression upon his pure soul. Pacho- mios vowed to become a Christian. Pachomios returned from the army after the victory, received holy Baptism, moved to the lonely settlement of Shenesit, and began to lead a strict ascetic life. Realizing the need for spiritual guidance, he turned to the desert-dweller Palamon. He was accepted by the El- der, and he began to follow the example of his instructor in monastic struggles. Once, after ten years of asceticism, St Pachomios made his way through the desert, and halted at the ruins of the former village of Tabennisi. Here he heard a Voice ordering him to start a monastery at this place. Pachomios told the Elder Palamon of this, and they both regarded the words as a command from God. They went to Tabennisi and built a small monastic cell. The holy Elder Palamon blessed the founda- tions of the monastery and predicted its future glory. But soon Palamon departed to the Lord. An angel of God then appeared to St Pachomios in the form of a schemamonk and gave him a Rule of monastic life. Soon his older brother John came and settled there with him. 1510 audubon drive • columbia, missouri, 65201 • tel. 573.817.0050 / fax 573.449.8452 email: [email protected] • web: www.saintlukecolumbia.org at the small entrance we chant Ἀπολυτίκιον της εορτης. • The Office of Woman in the New Testament
The Office of Woman in the New Testament GEORG GUNTER BLUM 1 Indications of services rendered by women in the life of Jesus THERE are no direct statements by either the earthly or the Risen Christ on the position of women in the Christian community. In spite of this, the question as to the attitude of Jesus to women is both justified and significant. Although there is no answer either in developed teaching or in single statements, yet certain conclusions can be drawn from particular situations in the life of Jesus. The influence of Jesus, by word and deed, was exercised on both men and women without distinction. The Gospels depict for us a series of encounters of our Lord with women, and we are shown emphatically that it was precisely the women who were honoured by his miracles and his revealing teaching. 1 But of greater importance is the fact that a small group of women lived constantly in the society of Jesus and followed him, just as did the disciples. Luke the Evangelist emphasises this fact, and refers to it in one of his summarised reports of Jesus's activity: 'And the twelve were with him, and certain women, which had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities, Mary called Magdalene, out of whom went seven devils, and Joanna, the wife of Chuza Herod's steward, and Susanna, and many others which minis tered unto him of their substance' (Luke 8:1-3). This report is not exclusive to Luke, nor is it according to a specially Lukan construction.

April 18, 2021, Worship St. Barnabas Lutheran Church, Cary, IL Prelude Announcements Thanksgiving for Baptism Alleluia! Christ is risen. People of God: Christ is risen indeed. Alleluia! Refreshed by the resurrection life we share in Christ, let us give thanks for the gift of baptism. Silence is kept for reflection and self-examination. We thank you, risen Christ, for these waters where you make us new, leading us from death to life, from tears to joy. We bless you, risen Christ, that your Spirit comes to us in the grace-filled waters of rebirth, like rains to our thirsting earth, like streams that revive our souls, like cups of cool water shared with strangers. Breathe your peace on your church when we hide in fear. Clothe us with your mercy and forgiveness. Send us companions on our journey as we share your life. Make us one, risen Christ. Cleanse our hearts. Shower us with life. To you be given all praise, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God, now and forever. People of God: Amen. Prayer of the Day Let us pray, God, sometimes the work you call us to feels overwhelming and too much to bear. Help us remember that you send others to share the work. Help us remember that others have the gifts we do not have, the gifts we need. And help us remember that sometimes you need us to serve others when they are overwhelmed. People of God: Amen Reading Acts 6:1-7 Forty days after his resurrection, Jesus promised the disciples that the Holy Spirit would come to them and help them spread the Gospel throughout the world.

  • The Supper at Emmaus Caravaggio Supper at Emmaus1 Isaiah 35
Trinity College Cambridge 12 May 2013 Picturing Easter: The Supper at Emmaus Caravaggio Supper at Emmaus1 Isaiah 35: 1–10 Luke 24: 13–35 Francis Watson I “Abide with us, for it is towards evening and the day is far spent”. A chance meeting with a stranger on the road leads to an offer of overnight accommodation. An evening meal is prepared, and at the meal a moment of sudden illumination occurs. In Caravaggio’s painting, dating from 1601, the scene at the supper table is lit by the light of the setting sun, which presumably comes from a small window somewhere beyond the top left corner of the painting. But the light is also the light of revelation which identifies the risen Christ, in a moment of astonished recognition. So brilliant is this light that everyday objects on the tablecloth are accompanied by patches of dark shadow. Behind the risen Christ’s illuminated head, the innkeeper’s shadow forms a kind of negative halo. This dramatic contrast of light and darkness is matched by the violent gestures of the figures seated to left and right. One figure lunges forward, staring intently, gripping the arms of his chair. The other throws his arms out wide, fingers splayed. The gestures are different, but they both express the same thing: absolute bewilderment in the presence of the incomprehensible and impossible. As they recognize their table companion as the risen Christ, the two disciples pass from darkness into light. There are no shades of grey here; this is no ordinary evening light. On Easter evening the light of the setting sun becomes the light of revelation.

  • THEY PRAYED.” Rev
“THEY PRAYED.” Rev. Robert T. Woodyard First Christian Reformed Church January 3, 2021, 9 and 10:30 AM Scripture Texts: Acts passages on prayer Introduction. You will recall we have been working our way through the book of Acts off and on over the past couple of years. This morning I am going to preach through the entire book of Acts. Sounds daunting, sounds overwhelming, sounds crazy, sounds really long. I am going to preach through the entire book of Acts this morning, but I am not going to play all the notes, I am going to play only one note, one note that is played over thirty times in the book of Acts, and that note is prayer. As you have come to expect at the beginning of each year I challenge us to take up the habit of praying and reading Scripture, to renew our efforts, God helping us. And to the extent that all of us have fallen short or failed to do this, I urge us to fail forward, to make an intentional effort no matter how faulty. In the book of Acts Dr. Luke describes in some detail the beginning history of the early Christian Church. There is one thing that stands out about the early church and it is prayer. The early church was a praying church. The early church didn’t talk about prayer, they didn’t expect just the leaders to pray, they didn’t hold conferences on prayer, they didn’t just “say their prayers,” they didn’t just open and close their meetings with prayer, the early church prayed.

  • JANUARY 20, 2019 THIRTY -FOURTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST Ven
SAINT EUTHYMIUS THE GREAT ...In his quest for solitude, the saint explored the wilderness of Ziph and settled in the cave where David once hid from King Saul. St. Euthymius founded a monastery beside David’s cave and built a church. During this time St. Euthymius converted many monks from the Manichean heresy; he also healed the sick and cast out devils. Visitors disturbed the tranquility of the wilderness. Since he loved silence, the saint decided to return to the monastery of St. Theoctistus. Along the way they found a quiet level place on a hill, and he remained there. St. Theoctistus went to St. Euthymius and requested him to return to the monastery, but the monk did not agree to this. However, he did promise to attend Sunday services at the monastery. St. Euthymius did not wish to have anyone nearby, nor to organize a cenobium or a lavra. The Lord commanded him in a vision not to drive away those who came to him for the salvation of their souls. After time, the brethren again gathered around him, and he organized a lavra. In 429, when St. Euthymius was 52 years old, Patriarch Juvenal of Jerusalem consecrated the lavra church and supplied it with presbyters and deacons. In 431, the Third Ecumenical Council was convened to combat the Nestorian heresy. St. Euthymius rejoiced over this affirmation of Orthodoxy. In 451, the Fourth Ecumenical Council condemned the heresy of Dioscorus, who asserted that in Jesus Christ is only one nature, the divine; during the Incarnation, Christ’s human nature is swallowed up the the divine nature.
