I Beni presentati in questa pubblicazione fanno parte della seconda edizione della Rete regionale delle dimore, ville, complessi architettonici e del paesaggio, parchi e giardini di valore storico e storico-artistico, costituita nel 2017 in attuazione della Legge regionale n. 8 del 2016. La Rete include siti pubblici e privati che hanno presentato domanda e che possiedono i requisiti richiesti in base all’apposito avviso pubblico curato dall’Area Valorizzazione del Patrimonio Culturale della Direzione regionale Cultura e Politiche giovanili. L’insieme dei Beni inclusi nella Rete, pertanto, al momento non è esaustivo dell’intero patrimonio esistente: si tratta di un lavoro di mappatura che verrà aggiornato annualmente sulla base delle candidature che man mano verranno presentate ai sensi dei successivi bandi. Particolarmente famose erano quelle di Roma, la città dove si sono svolte fino quando questa è diventata la capitale d’Italia ed è così venuto a morire quel contesto sociale nel quale esse erano nate; era il contesto rinascimentale e poi barocco, quello da cui scaturiva quel Carnevale di cui questa corsa rappresentava uno dei momenti più ce- lebri e spettacolari. Un po’ per “fortuna” ed un po’ per “caso”, le corse dei cavalli lanciati al galoppo senza fantino per le vie della città sono rimaste in vita qui a Ronciglione. Esse venivano effettuate sia nel periodo carnevalesco che durante le feste dedicate al patrono San Bartolomeo. E chi oggi vuole conoscerle può solo venire a Ronciglione e vivere insieme ai ron- ciglionesi le tensioni prima della partenza, l’energia vitale che percorre il paese e infine la liberazione suscitate dalla corsa sfrenata dei cavalli. Da secoli le “corse a vuoto” sono un forte segno della nostra comunità, un segno distintivo, identitario, un momento in cui il singolo si riconosce parte di una collettività.

University of Maryland. The palio race commemorates the history of Italian cities as it has done so since the late Middle Ages. Despite its cultural significance, and the popularity of ritual topics in Renaissance scholarship, there exists no comparable art historical study of the palio. In the thirteenth century, the proliferation of feast days in Italian cities coincided with growth in population and commerce. The palio race was the culminating, profane event in a series of sacred offerings and processions, in which representatives of the city’s religious and political groups participated. The palio may have descended from the chariot races held in Roman Italy for pagan festivals. The city government organized and paid for the palio. In Siena, the participation of the contrade (neighborhood groups) in the palio helped to preserve the tradition in the face of Florentine rule. Italian cities, including Florence, were highly regarded for their silk fabrics. Cities commissioned the largest and most opulent palio banners for the patronal feasts. Making the banner was a collaborative effort, involving the craftsmanship of banner- makers, furriers, painters, and even nuns. During religious processions, the banner was paraded through the city on a carro trionfale (triumphal chariot or cart), reminiscent of the vexillum, a cloth military standard used in triumphs of Roman antiquity. The palio banner challenges preconceptions of how Renaissance society valued art objects. The cost of making the banner equaled or exceeded payments for panel paintings or frescoes by well-known artists.
