Hraničí to až s namyslenosťou a sebaklamom. Tvrdím, že to vyplýva z toho, že nepoznáme dobre svoju minulosť. Preto historici oprávnene tvrdia, že kto nepozná minulosť, nemôže dobre a zodpovedne hodnotiť súčasnosť. Dokonca zastávam názor, že kto nepozná minulosť, nemôže ani pochopiť cestu, ktorou sme prešli a predovšetkým nemôže dobre prognózovať, čo máme očakávať a predovšetkým spraviť, aby dopad globálnych zmien na biosféru bol aspoň prijateľný. Väčšina súčasných slovenských ornitológov a teriológov sa zaoberá momentálnym stavom, výskytom a rozšírením vtákov a cicavcov v našej vlasti. Je relatívne oveľa menej publikácií, ktoré skúmajú minulý stav a porovnávajú ho so súčasným. Vyplýva to z náročnosti štúdia minulých prác, starých dokumentov a údajov (publikovaných i nepublikovaných), často čiastočne alebo úplne zabudnutých a doposiaľ neobjavených v našich múzeách. A LOOK TO THE PAST, AN INSIGHT INTO THE PRESENT AND INTO THE FUTURE Branislav MATOUŠEK Dedicated to Otto Herman (1835 Brezno, Slovakia – 1914 Miskolc, Hungary) on the centenary of his death and Tibor Weisz (1914 Bardejov-1983 Bardejov, Slovakia) on the centenary of his birth. There is no doubt that during the last few decades, several disciplines of science, including zoology and ecology, have achieved a great momentum. Some argue that it is now not even possible to compare the successes of the past with impressive current achievements. However, such opinions verge on arrogance and self-delusion. I am absolutely convinced that these opinions arise from the fact that we just do not know our history. It is also the reason why historians correctly claim that without learning from history we are not able to properly and responsibly evaluate the present. I believe that without knowing the past we cannot understand the path we have trodden, and especially we are not able to prognose correctly what to expect and what to do to avoid or at least make acceptable the

ABSTRACT FLEAS, HOSTS AND HABITAT: WHAT CAN WE PREDICT ABOUT THE SPREAD OF VECTOR-BORNE ZOONOTIC DISEASES? MEGAN M. FRIGGENS Vector-borne diseases of humans and wildlife are experiencing resurgence across the globe. I examine the dynamics of flea borne diseases through a comparative analysis of flea literature and analyses of field data collected from three sites in New Mexico: The Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, the Sandia Mountains and the Valles Caldera National Preserve (VCNP). My objectives were to use these analyses to better predict and manage for the spread of diseases such as plague (Yersinia pestis). To assess the impact of anthropogenic disturbance on flea communities, I compiled and analyzed data from 63 published empirical studies. Anthropogenic disturbance is associated with conditions conducive to increased transmission of flea-borne diseases. Most measures of flea infestation increased with increasing disturbance or peaked at intermediate levels of disturbance. Future trends of habitat and climate change will probably favor the spread of flea-borne disease.

  • Community Structure of Mites (Acari: Acariformes and Parasitiformes) in Nests of the Semi-Collared Flycatcher (Ficedula Semitorquata) R
International Research Journal of Natural Sciences Vol.3, No.3, pp.48-53, December 2015 ___Published by European Centre for Research Training and Development UK (www.eajournals.org) COMMUNITY STRUCTURE OF MITES (ACARI: ACARIFORMES AND PARASITIFORMES) IN NESTS OF THE SEMI-COLLARED FLYCATCHER (FICEDULA SEMITORQUATA) R. Davidova, V. Vasilev, N. Ali, J. Bakalova Konstantin Preslavsky University of Shumen, 115, Universitetska Str., Shumen, 9700, Bulgaria. ABSTRACT: The aims of the present paper are to establish the specific structure of communities of prostigmatic and mesostigmatic mites in nests of the semi-collared flycatcher (Ficedula semitorquata) and to compare the fauna with the mites in nests of two other European flycatchers. For analysis of community structure of mites were used the indices: prevalence, relative density, mean intensity and dominance. Mite communities are strongly dominated by the species Dermanyssus gallinae and Ornithonyssus sylviarum, which were found with the highest frequency and dominance. The mite communities are characterized by a large number of subrecedent species. KEYWORDS: Acariformes, Parasitiformes, Nest of Bird, Community Structure INTRODUCTION The nests of different species of birds are an example of a fairly unstable and isolated habitat, with its own dependent on it specific fauna which involves different groups of invertebrate animals. One of the components of this fauna which demonstrates particular abundance is the arthropods, and more specifically, the mites. The studies of Parasitiformes show that mesostigmatic mites living in birds' nests vary both in terms of their species affiliation and the structure of their communities [4, 8]. Highly important with respect to veterinary science and medicine are a number of species, such as Ornithonyssus bursa, Ornithonyssus sylviarum, Dermanyssus gallinae harboured by birds, Ornithonyssus bacoti, harboured by rodents, etc.

Molluscs of the Dürrenstein Wilderness Area S a b i n e F ISCHER & M i c h a e l D UDA Abstract: Research in the Dürrenstein Wilderness Area (DWA) in the southwest of Lower Austria is mainly concerned with the inventory of flora, fauna and habitats, interdisciplinary monitoring and studies on ecological disturbances and process dynamics. During a four-year qualitative study of non-marine molluscs, 96 sites within the DWA and nearby nature reserves were sampled in cooperation with the “Alpine Land Snails Working Group” located at the Natural History Museum of Vienna. Altogether, 84 taxa were recorded (72 land snails, 12 water snails and mussels) including four endemics and seven species listed in the Austrian Red List of Molluscs. A reference collection (empty shells) of molluscs, which is stored at the DWA administration, was created. This project was the first systematic survey of mollusc fauna in the DWA. Further sampling might provide additional information in the future, particularly for Hydrobiidae in springs and caves, where detailed analyses (e.g. anatomical and genetic) are needed.
