(Acari: Parasitidae) is described based on females, deutonymphs and males extracted from leaf litter and soil in Ami, Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan. Morphological differences between the new species and its closely related species, Vulgarogamasus fujisanus (Ishikawa, 1972), are recorded based on the examination of type mate- rials. Information about parasitid mites reported in Japanese literature is reviewed, and a key to species is provided. The type specimens of Acari, Araneae, Scorpiones, Pantopoda, and Amphipoda housed in the Alexander Koenig Zoological Research Museum, Bonn, are listed. 183 names are recorded; of these, 64 (35%) are represented by name bearing (i.e., primary) types. Specific and subspecific names are listed alphabetically, followed by the original genus name, bibliographic citation, present combination (as far as known to the authors), and emended label data. Key Words. Type specimens, Acari, Araneae, Scorpiones, Pantopoda, Amphipoda, Bonn. INTRODUCTION The ZFMK in Bonn has a relatively small collection of Abbreviations. HT: holotype, PT: paratype, ST: syntype, non-insect arthropods, with an emphasis on arachnids LT: lectotype, PLT: paralectotype; n, pn, dn, tn: (proto-, (mostly mites, spiders, and scorpions), sea spiders (Pan- deuto-, trito-) nymph, hy: hypopus, L: larva topoda) and amphipods. Other arachnid and crustacean or- ders are represented, but not by type material. A small part of the material goes back to the founder of the museum, ACARI Alexander Koenig, and was collected around 1910. Most Acari were deposited at the museum by F. S. WHITAKER Jrooo Abstract Three new species of fur mites of the family Listrophoridae (Acari) are described from the Round-tailed Muskrat Neofiber alIeni, from Florida, U.S.A. They are Listrophorus laynei sp. n., L. caudatus sp. n. and Prolistrophorus birkenholzi sp. n. Resume Trois nouvelles especes d'acariens pilicoles de la famille Listrophoridae (Acari) sont decrites de Neofiber alIeni, des U.S.A.: Listrophorus laynei sp. n., L. caudatus sp. n. et Prolistrophorus birkenholzi sp. n. BIRKENHOLZ (1963) reported that nearly all Round-tailed muskrats, Neofober aJJeni, he examined were infested with "Listrophoridae, probably an undescribed species." We have now collected additional material from this host and herein describe three new species ofListrophoridae (Acari). Seventeen Round-tailed Muskrats, mostly collected by James N. Layne, were examined for parasites by M.A.S., along with mites from 8 additional muskrats collected earlier by Layne. The muskrats included were collected between 1968 and 1984. Further information on abundance and occurrence on the host will be presented later. Two of the species belong to the genus Listrophorus PAGENSTECHER, 1861 (L. 1aynei sp. n. and L. caudatus sp. n.) and one to the genus ProJistrophorus FAIN, 1970 (P. birkenho1zi sp. n.). Fur mites of other groups (Myobiidae, Myocoptidae and hypopi of Glycyphagidae) were not regularly found on Neofiber aJJeni. The mite fauna of this rodent appears therefore much poorer than that of the Muskrat, Ondatra zibethicus, another species o Depose le 5 novembre 1985. -

ABSTRACT: The aims of the present paper are to establish the specific structure of communities of prostigmatic and mesostigmatic mites in nests of the semi-collared flycatcher (Ficedula semitorquata) and to compare the fauna with the mites in nests of two other European flycatchers. For analysis of community structure of mites were used the indices: prevalence, relative density, mean intensity and dominance. Mite communities are strongly dominated by the species Dermanyssus gallinae and Ornithonyssus sylviarum, which were found with the highest frequency and dominance. The mite communities are characterized by a large number of subrecedent species. KEYWORDS: Acariformes, Parasitiformes, Nest of Bird, Community Structure INTRODUCTION The nests of different species of birds are an example of a fairly unstable and isolated habitat, with its own dependent on it specific fauna which involves different groups of invertebrate animals. One of the components of this fauna which demonstrates particular abundance is the arthropods, and more specifically, the mites. The studies of Parasitiformes show that mesostigmatic mites living in birds' nests vary both in terms of their species affiliation and the structure of their communities [4, 8]. Highly important with respect to veterinary science and medicine are a number of species, such as Ornithonyssus bursa, Ornithonyssus sylviarum, Dermanyssus gallinae harboured by birds, Ornithonyssus bacoti, harboured by rodents, etc. -

Nadchatram ----- ABSTRACT-The fur-mites of the family Myobiidae parasitic on rodents in Malaysia are studied. They belong to 9 species and 2 genera Radfordia Ewing and Myobia von Reyden. The new taxa include one new subgenus Radfordia (Rat timyobia); 4 new species~ Radfordia (Rat timyobia) pahangensis, R.(R.) selangorensis, R. (R.) subangensis, Myobia malaysiensis and one new subspecies Radfordia (Radfordia) ensifera jalorensis. These are described and illustrated. In addition, the male of Radfordia (Rat:ttmyouti.a) acinaciseta Wilson, 1967 is described for the first time. ----- During a stay in the Institute for Medical Research, Kuala Lumpur, F. S. L. collected a number of parasitic mites from various hosts (Fain et al., 1980). This paper deals with the species of Myobiidae found on rodents. Nine species in 2 genera-Radfordia and Myobia, , were collected. A new subgenus, Radfordia (Rattimyobia), 4 new species, Radfordia (Rattimyobia) pahangensi s, R. (R.) selangorensis, R. (R.) subangensis, Myobia malaysiensis, and 1 new subspecies, R. (Radfordia ) ensifera jalorensis, are described and illustrated. In addition, the male of R. (Rattimyobia) acinaciseta Wilson is described for the first time. The holotypes are deposited in the British Museum, Natural History, London. Ectoparasites of Pine Voles, Microtus pinetorum, from Clark County, Illinois D. David Pascal, Jr. and John O. Whitaker, Jr. Department of Life Sciences Indiana State University Terre Haute, Indiana 47809 Introduction In studies on pine voles, only Hamilton (1938) and Benton (1955), both working in New York, attempted to collect and identify external parasites. Hamilton noted the mite, Laelaps kochi Oudemans, 1936 and lice of the genus Hoplopleura to be par- ticularly numerous. Benton reported Hoplopleura acanthopus (Burmeister, 1839) and Androlaelaps fahrenholzi (Berlese, 191 1) as the most abundant pine vole ectoparasites. Ferris (1921) reported H. acanthopus from pine voles in New York and Iowa. Another louse, Polyplax spinulosa (Burmeister, 1839), was found to infest pine voles in Georgia (Morlan, 1952), although Rattus norvegicus and R. rattus are the true hosts for this louse (Pratt and Karp, 1953; Wilson, 1961). The occurrence on pine voles was accidental. Mite records (other than chiggers) on Microtus pinetorum have been summarized by Whitaker and Wilson (1974), but include LAELAPIDAE: Androlaelaps fahrenholzi (Berlese, 1911), Laelaps kochi Oudemans, 1936, Haemogamasus longitarsus (Banks, 1910), H. liponyssoides Ewing, 1925, H. ambulans (Thorell, 1872), Laelaps alaskensis Grant, 1947, and Eulaelaps stabularis (Koch, 1836); GLYCYPHAGIDAE: Glycyphagus hypudaei (Koch, 1841) and Orycteroxenus soricis (Oudemans, 1915) LISTROPHORIDAE: Listrophorus pitymys Fain and Hyland, 1972; MYOBIIDAE Radfordia ensifera (Poppe, 1896) and R. lemnina (Koch, 1841); CHEYLETIDAE Eucheyletia bishoppi Baker, 1949. PARASITE COMMUNITIES OF TROPICAL FOREST RODENTS: INFLUENCES OF MICROHABITAT STRUCTURE AND SPECIALIZATION By Ashley M. Winker Parasitism is the most common life style and has important implications for the ecology and evolution of hosts. Most organisms host multiple species of parasites, and parasite communities are frequently influenced by the degree of host specialization. Parasite communities are also influenced by their habitat – both the host itself and the habitat that the host occupies. Tropical forest rodents are ideal for examining hypotheses relating parasite community composition to host habitat and host specialization. Proechimys semispinosus and Hoplomys gymnurus are morphologically-similar echimyid rodents; however, P. semispinosus is more generalized, occupying a wider range of habitats. I predicted that P. semispinosus hosts a broader range of parasite species that are less host-specific than does H. gymnurus and that parasite communities of P. semispinosus are related to microhabitat structure, host density, and season. During two dry and wet seasons, individuals of the two rodent species were trapped along streams in central Panama to compare their parasites, and P. semispinosus was sampled on six plots of varying microhabitat structure in contiguous lowland forest to compare parasite loads to microhabitat structure. Such structure was quantified by measuring thirteen microhabitat variables, and dimensions were reduced to a smaller subset using factor analysis to define overall structure. Ectoparasites were collected from each individual, and blood smears were obtained to screen for filarial worms and trypanosomes. In support of my prediction, the habitat generalist ( P. semispinosus ) hosted more individual fleas, mites, and microfilaria; contrary to my prediction, the habitat specialist (H. -
