Abstract: The functional response of the phytoseiid predator Chileseius camposi González y Schuster, 1962 (Acarina:Phytoseiidae) on densities of its prey Panonychus ulmi (Koch, 1836) was evaluated under controlled temperature (20 ± 2 ºC),, relative humidity (75 ± 15%) and photoperiod (16:8h L:D). A functional type II response was displayed (Holling’s disk). Holling, Wolf transformation and Rogers models gave similar values for estimating parameters of the Holling’s disk equation; however, estimates produced by the Livdahl and Stiven model were higher. Values of attack rate and handling time can be considered within the normal range for phy- toseiid generalists. -

During this study 13 species of seven genera belong to two families Ascidae and Melicharidae were collected and identified. Four species namely Asca aphidioides (LINNAEUS), Zerconopsis michaeli EVANS & HYATT, Antennoseius (Antennoseius) bacatus ATHIAS-HENRIOT from family Ascidae and Proctolaelaps scolyti EVANS from family Melicharidae are new records for the mites fauna of Guilan Province. Proctolaelaps fiseri SAMŠIŇÁK (Melicharidae) and Zerconopsis remiger (KRAMER) (Ascidae) are new for Iran mites fauna. Expanded descriptions including illustrations of the adult female of Proctolaelaps fiseri and Zerconopsis remiger, respectively are provided based on the Iranian material. Introduction The superfamily Ascoidea is richly represented in tropical, temperate, and arctic alpine regions, where many of its members are free-living predators of nematodes and micro- arthropods in soil or humus and suspended arboreal litter habitats. -

A maturity index for gamasid soil mites (Mesostigmata: Gamsina) as an indicator of environmental impacts of pollution on forest soils. Appl. Soil Ecol. 9, 447– 452) in five natural forest reserves in eastern Austria. These sites were assumed to be stable and undisturbed reference habitats. The maturity indices of the gamasine communities were near their maximum in the investigated stands, and thus performed well towards the ‘‘high end’’ of the total range of the index. An occasionally inundated floodplain forest yielded much lower values. However, the correlation of the index with humus type, as proposed by Ruf et al. (Ruf, A., Beck, L., Dreher, P., Hund-Rienke, K., Ro¨mbke, J., Spelda, J., 2003. A biological classification concept for the assessment of soil quality: ‘‘biological soil classification scheme’’ (BBSK). Agric. Ecosyst. Environ. 98, 263–271) for managed forests, was not found. This indicates that the humus form is not a good predictor of the index over its entire range and is inappropriate to assess the fit of test communities. Fourteen percent of the species in this study were omitted from index calculation because adequate data for their families are lacking. -

ISBN 80-86525-04-X The six most important caves in the surrounding of the Veľký Folkmar village, the Márnica Cave, the Predná veľká Cave, the Klenbová Cave, the Nová galéria Cave, the Cave Hoľa I, and the Zelená puklinová cave, were investigated for terrestrial arthropods during 2002. Invertebrates were collected by three types of pitfall traps differing in fixation solution (ethylalcohol, formaldehyde, ethylenglycol/beer; with exposition from March to June), by individual hand sampling (March - October) and by heat extraction of baits or organic materials. More then 1500 individuals of mites, pseudoscorpions, spiders, harvestmen, isopods, millipedes and centipedes were obtained and determined. The mites (especially Gamasida with 1062 individuals and 13 spp.) were the most abundant and diverse group. Spiders were also very rich in number of species (17 spp.). The mites Archipteria coleoptrata, Belba clavigera, Damaeus gracillipes, Damaeus cf. tecticola, Oribellopsis cavatica, Liacarus subterraneus, Oribella cf. forsslundi (Oribatida), Parasitus loricatus and Uroobovella advena (Gamasida), the spiders Meta menardi, Metellina merianae, Porrhomma convexum, and P. egeria, the opilionid Mitostoma chrysomelas, and the millipede Trachysphaera costata may be regarded as cavernicolous (eutroglophilous). The other species (Hexapoda excluded) are characterised as dwellers of forest soils and litter and penetrated into subterranean spaces more or less occasionally. -

In field populations, about 6.4–16.1% of females showed setal variation, whereas in laboratory populations, this percentage was relatively low in N. californicus (5.8–14.8%) but high in N. womersleyi (8.6–36.1%). Setal variations were divided into the following categories: absent, additional, inserted, deviated, expanded, and shortened setae. An absence of setae was more common than additional or inserted setae, both in the field and laboratory populations. Expanded and shortened setae were rare. An absence of setae was frequently observed on the ventral opisthosoma, and occurred on both of its sides (left and right), mainly at ZV3 in N. womerwelyi and JV3 in Typhlodromus vulgaris. In the IG population of N. womersleyi, an absence of setae was frequently observed at ZV1 (49.5% of the total absent setae in the population) and ZV3 (37.8%), which was significantly different from the other populations. The difference in setal variation between field and laboratory populations suggests that it is not caused by accidental defects during post-embryonic development but rather is the result of heritable traits. -
