ABOUT THE PLAY

AUTHOR’S NOTES Way back in 1991, Michael Scheman asked me a simple question, “Are you a fan of Stephen Schwartz’s work?” “Absolutely,” I answered. Then he asked, “Did you know there’s no official revue of his work?” I couldn’t believe it. How was it possible that the man who brought us and so many other fantastic musicals didn’t have a revue? Michael and I, being in our early twenties, decided that we were the ones to fix this glaring omission. I had just finished creating a revue that was basically a series of songs connected by light patter – and I found it somewhat unsatisfying as a writer. There was no narrative connection between songs. Each moment had to start from scratch, and there was no cumulative emotional effect by the end of the evening. I wanted to do something more. If I was going to write another revue, I wanted to string the songs together to tell a story – with characters and arcs and emotional punch. And again, being in our twenties, Michael and I thought this was a grand idea. We had no idea that no one had successfully pulled this off before. We were also naïve enough to think that we could just look up Stephen Schwartz in the phonebook (yes, there were phonebooks back then), tell him our idea, and he would say, “That’s great! Go for it!” And then a crazy thing happened: we looked up Stephen Schwartz in the phonebook, told him our idea, and he said, “That’s great! Go for it!” Only did I learn that that’s pretty much what he says to everybody. But being naïve young men, we took him at his word and started . Two years later, we presented the material at the Dramatists’ Guild, and Stephen decided to join us in process. Two years after that we had a production, and realized that we had much more work to do. Then, as so often happens, our careers took us in different directions, and we put the project on hold. For decades. Snapshots is a memory piece that covers a couple’s relationship from the moment they met as children, to their present empty-nest lives. At the time we began working, I was in my twenties, and Stephen was in his forties – and we brought our respective life experiences to the piece. When we picked it up again, I was in my forties, and Stephen in his sixties – and while the break wasn’t planned, it turned out to be vital. Through the passage of time, and our new life experiences, we were finally able to finish the piece. So here it is: Snapshots – a musical mosaic love story built from the songs of Stephen Schwartz. It only took twenty years to get here, but as you will hopefully discover: you can live a lifetime in a couple of hours. – David Stern

ABOUT THE PLAY

THE MUSIC OF STEPHEN SCHWARTZ

GODSPELL (1971) Godspell began as a college project performed by students at Carnegie Mellon University before moving to LaMaMa Club in . Re-scored before it opened Off-Broadway in 1971, the show has become a long-running success with numerous productions, including a Broadway revival in 2011 and 2012. Depicting a series of parables based on the Gospels of Matthew and Luke and interspersed with lyrics from traditional hymns set to modern music, Godspell’s hit song “Day by Day” from the original cast recording reached #13 on the Billboard pop singles chart during the summer of 1972. The Company of Broadway’s 2011 revival of Godspell.

PIPPIN (1972) Derived from the old Burlesque style of Faust, a mysterious performance troupe relates the story of , a young Prince, and his father Charlemagne (based loosely on real individuals from the Middle Ages) who seek a sense of meaning and significance in the world. Pippin premiered at Broadway’s Imperial Theatre in 1972, before going on to the West End and numerous other productions. The American Repertory Theatre’s 2013 Broadway revival won the Tony Award for Best Musical Revival, and is currently on National Tour.

WORKING (1977) Based on the 1974 book Working: People Talk About What They Do All Day and How They Feel About What They Do by Studs Terkel, the musical Working premiered at ’s Goodman Theatre in 1977. It enjoyed a very brief stint on Broadway in 1978 before moving on to numerous developmental productions around the country, returning to Broadway in 2011 after significant revisions. The musical depicts the hopes, dreams, concerns, and joys of the average working American, told through vivid vignettes Company of Off-Broadway’s 59E59 production of Working, 2012. of people that the world often takes for granted.

ABOUT THE PLAY

THE MAGIC SHOW (1978) , originally developed under the title Spellbound and starring master magician , opened at Broadway’s Cort Theatre in 1978, receiving Tony Award nominations for Henning’s performance as Best Featured Actor in a Musical and for Best Direction of a Musical by director Grover Dale. The show features the grandiose performance of aging alcoholic magician Feldman the Magnificent as the seedy nightclub venue known as the Top Hat attempts to replace him with a younger act.

PERSONALS (1985) Personals premiered at Broadway’s Minetta Lane Theatre in 1985, and was revived Off-West End in 1998. The story describes the never-ending search for love in a comedic collection of monologues, scenes, and songs about the content of personal ads, and the myriad of potential responses.

RAGS (1986) opened on Broadway in 1986 at the , where it ran for only four performances but was nominated for five , including Best Musical, Best Original Score, and Best Book of a Musical. A significantly revised version was produced at The American Jewish Theatre in City in 1991, and was reworked again in the late 1990s. The story centers on a young immigrant mother, Rebecca Hershkowitz, who escapes to New York’s Lower East Side after a pogrom and begins a love affair with American labor orga- nizer Saul, who is working to unionize the sweatshop at which Marilyn Caskey and Jonathan Andrew Bleicher in Rebecca works. the revised Rags at Paper Mill Playhouse, 1999.

THE BAKER’S WIFE (1989) A stage musical adaptation of the 1938 French film La Femme du Boulanger by Marcel Pagnol and Jean Giono, The Baker’s Wife premiered in ’s West End in 1989 and has since developed a dedicated cult following. The story centers upon a small bickering town in rural 1930s France; after being without a baker for seven weeks, the town re- joices to welcome baker Aimable and his young wife Genevieve. When Genevieve is seduced by a handsome young gigolo, Aimable loses his passion for life and for baking, prompting the town to pull together to reunite the young couple.

ABOUT THE PLAY

CHILDREN OF EDEN (1991) Based on the Book of Genesis, was developed as a workshop at the Royal Shakespeare Company, before opening at the Prince Edward Theatre in London’s West End in 1991. Act I describes the events of Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel, while Prince of Wales Theatre’s gala performance of Children of Eden, 2012. Act II depicts the events of Noah and the flood. The West End run of Children of Eden was cut somewhat short by the eruption of the Persian Gulf War, and its subsequent negative effects on world tourism.

RELUCTANT PILGRIM (1997) A 1997 musical album recorded by Stephen Schwartz, loosely based on his own life experiences and observations.

WICKED (2003) Based on ’s 1995 novel : The Life and Times of the , the musical depicts the lives of the witches (Glinda the Good and the Wicked Witch of the West) from L. Frank Baum’s classic The Wonderful (1900) and the 1939 film adaptationThe Wizard of Oz. Beginning prior to and continuing through the arrival of Dorothy, The Company of Broadway’s Wicked. Wicked details the events that sent the two witches down their respective paths of good and evil. Since its Broadway debut in 2003, Wicked has been seen and broken box office records around the world. The name Elphaba, given to the Wicked Witch of the West in Maguire’s novel, is an homage to L. Frank Baum, derived from the phonetic sounds of his initials: LFB.

CAPTAIN LOUIE (2005) Adapted from the children’s book The Trip (1987) by Ezra Jack Keats, premiered in the late 1980s and was revived Off-Broadway in 2005, before going on to many other productions and a U.S. tour. Captain Louie tells the story of a young boy from the city whose family relocates to a new neighborhood. Upset at leaving his friends behind, Louie escapes into his own imagination on Halloween night to assuage his newfound loneliness.

ENCHANTED (2007) Disney’s 2007 live-action musical film starring Amy Adams, Patrick Dempsey, James Marsden, Timothy Spall, , Rachel Covey, and Susan Sarandon. The story follows archetypal Disney Princess Giselle, as she is forced into the real world of from her animated world of Andalasia.

Jim DeSelm (Daniel) is making his Arizona Theatre Company debut. A Chicago-based actor, Mr. DeSelm most recently appeared as Michael in the pre-Broadway production of Beaches, and as Tony in at Drury Lane Theatre. Chicago area credits include: Road Show (Chicago Shakespeare Theater), James Joyce’s The Dead (Court Theatre), (Paramount Theatre), South Pacific(Marriott Theatre), Godspell and (Theatre at the Center), Juno (TimeLine Theatre Company), A Catered Affair (Porchlight Music Theatre), Parade and Floyd Collins (Boho Theatre, Jeff Award Nomination – Actor/ Musical), The Mikado (Hypocrites Theater Chicago), The Last Five Years (Kokandy Productions, Jeff Award Nomination – Actor/Musical), and Pump Boys & Dinettes (Theo Ubique Theatre, Jeff Nomination – Music Direction). Television credits include Chicago P.D. and Double Cross. Mr. DeSelm received a B.A. in Voice from Bethel College, Indiana.

Beth DeVries (Sue) is making her Arizona Theatre Company debut. Seattle credits: Sue in Snapshots (2005 and 2015), Fantine in Les Misérables, Anna in The King and I, Marian in The Music Man, and Rose in The Secret Garden with Village Theatre; Laura in Goblin Market with A Contemporary Theatre; Diana in Next to Normal with Balagan Theatre/Contemporary Classics; Eve in Children of Eden and Meg in Damn Yankees with Civic Light Opera; Luisa in Nine, Phyllis in , and Charity in Barnum with Showtunes Theatre Company. Other regional credits include: Sue in Snapshots (2008) with Theatreworks, Palo Alto; Lois in Small Town Story with NY Theatre Barn. Ms. DeVries has also voiced or appeared in countless audio books, children’s stories, commercials, and company videos.

Hugh Hastings (Dan) is thrilled to make his Arizona Theatre Company debut in this production of Snapshots! He was first introduced to the project ten years ago, when he played Dan at the Village Originals Festival of New Musicals. He is a longtime Seattle-based actor with years of professional experience including playing roles at theatres across the Northwest, including Village Theatre, The 5th Avenue Theatre, ACT Theatre, Seattle Children’s Theatre, and Seattle Shakespeare Company, as well as the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. With his wife, Connie Corrick, Mr. Hastings has enjoyed performing in a variety of musical styles and in a variety of musical venues, which in addition to theatres has included cruise ships, casinos, and resort hotels. In addition to performing, Mr. Hastings has enjoyed teaching all aspects of theatre to young people. He is currently an adjunct professor at Cornish College of the Arts, teaching Acting for the .

Mallory King (Susie/Dance Captain) is thrilled to be making her Arizona Theatre Company debut. Theatre credits include: Snapshots, Mary Poppins, and Funny Girl (Village Theatre); Kristine in , Oklahoma, The Music Man, and Oliver (The 5th Avenue Theatre). She holds a B.F.A. from Brigham Young University and has classical ballet training from Pacific Northwest Ballet.

Tracy McDowell (Susan) has previously appeared on Broadway/NYC in Motown, Rent, Measure of Success (The Lark), Jawbreaker, Atlantis, and Disney “New Project.” Regional: , Godspell. Ben Wynant (Danny) is excited to be making his ATC debut! Regional credits include Snapshots, Big River, Iron Curtain, Anne of Green Gables (Village Theatre), Harold and the Purple Crayon (Seattle Children’s Theatre), Dogfight(ArtsWest), Spring Awakening and Urinetown (Balagan Theatre), Into the Woods and Floyd Collins (STAGEright Theatre). Mr. Wynant has also been a part of several developing works including Marco Polo, Hello Out There, and Hello! My Baby in the Village Theatre Festival of New Musicals. He holds his B.A. in Theatre from Seattle Pacific University.

THE CREATIVE TEAM

Stephen Schwartz (Music and Lyrics) has contributed music and/or lyrics to Godspell, Pippin, The Magic Show, The Baker’s Wife, Working, Children of Eden, and the current Broadway hit Wicked, among others. He collaborated with composer Alan Menken on the songs for the Disney features Enchanted, Pocahontas, and The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and wrote the songs for DreamWorks’ . He has written two musicals for children – Captain Louie and My Son Pinocchio – and recently composed a new opera, Séance on a Wet Afternoon. Schwartz has released two CDs of original songs, Reluctant Pilgrim and Uncharted Territory, and his career is the subject of the book Defying Gravity. He has been inducted into the Theatre Hall of Fame, the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Other awards include three Academy Awards, four Grammy Awards, the Isobel Stevenson Tony Award, and a tiny handful of tennis trophies. David Stern (Book and Co-Conceiver) began his career working on the Broadway productions of Miss Saigon, Nick & Nora, and Big. He was soon infected with the desire to put pen to paper and wrote the plays Dreams & Stuff and Finders of Lost Luggage. After a small detour into directing with the New York revival of Starting Here, Starting Now (nominated for a MAC Award) and a stint with The American Project at Circle in the Square, he transitioned into radio by writing for NPR’s The 1990s Radio Hour and a Half. Mr. Stern then migrated west to write numerous movies, including Geppetto (nominated for four ), Open Season 2 (nominated for an Annie Award), Open Season 3 (which he also executive produced), Free Birds (which he also executive produced), Henry & Me (nominated for an Annie Award), as well as the upcoming animated feature, Punk Farm. Mr. Stern is a regular on the punch-up/re-write circuit and has contributed to many motion pictures, including First Daughter, The Smurfs, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Tinkerbell 3, Open Season, and The Hotel Transylvania. For the stage, Mr. Stern wrote Snapshots and My Son Pinocchio with longtime collaborator Stephen Schwartz. In addition, he has helped finance several Broadway shows, includingWicked, Next to Normal, The Pee Wee Herman Show, and If/Then. For television, Mr. Stern served as a writer and producer on the series Mozart in the Jungle. Mr. Stern has just produced the documentary Roadmap Genesis, now available on DVD. www.davidstern.com Michael Scheman (Co-Conceiver) was nominated for a Lucille Lortel Award for his adaptation of The Pirates of Penzance, staged on board a tall ship at the South Street Seaport. Productions directed include Message to Michael (Rattlestick Playwrights Theater), Jeffrey (premieres in D.C., Houston, and Tokyo), Company and Fit to Be Tied (Stages Repertory Theatre), West Side Story and Personals (Millbrook Playhouse). Mr. Scheman won the John Golden Prize for his first full-length play, Running from the Rhyme, and served as Resident Director on the American premiere of Ragtime. He is a lyricist alum of the Advanced Workshop of the BMI Musical Theatre Workshop and received his M.F.A. in Directing from Columbia University.

He lit Billy Crystal’s 700 Sundays on Broadway and its subsequent US, Canadian and Australian tours as well as the HBO film. Off-Broadway, his lighting and projections forThe Snow Queen won the award for best overall design at last year’s New York Musical Theater Festival. Internationally, he designed Terminal, directed by Joseph Chaikin, and his scenic and lighting design for The History (and Mystery) of the Universe has been seen at major theaters across the country. He was a regular collaborator at San Jose Repertory Theatre, designing over thirty productions there. His regional credits include Arena Stage, American Repertory Theater, Opera San Jose, Magic Theatre, La Jolla Playhouse, and The Old Globe. Mr. Cuthbert is a Professor of Design at the University of , Santa Cruz.

Abe Jacob (Sound Designer) returns to ATC where he was Sound Designer for Xanadu, Next to Normal, Backwards in High Heels, [title of show], Hair, The Pajama Game, The Pirates of Penzance, The Fantasticks, The Gershwins’ Fascinating Rhythm, and Five Guys Named Moe, among others. His original designs for musical theatre include the Broadway productions of Hair, Jesus Christ Superstar, Pippin, Chicago, A Chorus Line, , Cats, Black and Blue, and RAIN: A Tribute to . A native of Tucson, his initial contribution to the performing arts was the creation of the concert sound for such legendary artists as ; The Mamas and the Papas; Peter, Paul and Mary; and the historic rock celebration, The Festival. Mr. Jacob is the Resident Designer in Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theatre. He is the recipient of the 2008 USITT Award for Lifetime Achievement in Theater Design. Abe also teaches master classes and has mentored generations of talented individuals, many of whom are Broadway’s top theatrical sound designers today. Gregory W. Towle (Associate Projection Designer) is returning to ATC for the fourth time with Snapshots, having previously worked on Romeo and Juliet (Associate Projections Designer), Around the World in 80 Days (Projections Designer), and Next to Normal (Assistant Projections Designer). His other credits include assisting David Lee Cuthbert with projections in The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus and Spring Awakening at San Jose Repertory Theatre. Brenda K. Walker (Stage Manager) returns to ATC, where she stage managed Xanadu. Past credits include No Way to Treat a Lady, In the Heights, Funny Girl, Fiddler on the Roof, It Shoulda Been You (SM), Jesus Christ Superstar, , Meet Me in St. Louis, and The Full Monty (ASM) for Village Theatre; and Measure for Measure (ASM) for Seattle Shakespeare Company. Timothy Toothman (Assistant Stage Manager) is the Artistic Associate at ATC. He most recently stage managed ATC’s productions of A Weekend with Pablo Picasso, Five Presidents, Wait Until Dark, Around the World in 80 Days, The Importance of Being Earnest, Freud’s Last Session, Lombardi, Daddy Long Legs, and God of Carnage, among others. Mr. Toothman spent five seasons as the Production Stage Manager for the Geva Theatre Center in Rochester, NY and was then Company Manager for five years for Sunshine Too, a national touring ensemble of deaf and hearing actors. He has also managed producing and presenting theatres in Indiana and Maryland. Prior to moving to Arizona, Mr. Toothman spent eleven years as a program and grants director for the Maryland State Arts Council and the Connecticut Commission on the Arts. Mr. Toothman stage managed the National Heritage Awards Program for the National Endowment for the Arts for ten years and and has been the stage manager for the Vineyard Playhouse on Martha’s Vineyard for the past twelve summer seasons.

Village Theatre (Co-Producer) based in Issaquah, WA, with operations in Everett, is a leading producer of musical theatre in the Pacific Northwest. Producing entertaining, quality productions since 1979, Village Theatre has grown into one of the region’s best–attended Equity theatres, with over 19,400 subscribers and 200,000 projected total attendance each season. Through its Village Originals program, Village Theatre is nationally recognized for its contribution to the development of new musicals, having launched over 145 new works to date. Relevant’s Sister company, OddLot Entertainment, develops and produces outstanding new film properties. Cardboard Belt Productions, LLC, is a group of media and entertainment professionals based in New York City and . Member credits extend beyond production to directing, writing, design, and performance. Goodspeed Musicals has achieved international acclaim and received two Tony Awards for outstanding achievement in musical theatre. Goodspeed produces three musicals each season at the Goodspeed Opera House in East Haddam, Connecticut, and develops new musicals at The Norma Terris Theatre in Chester, Connecticut. From Goodspeed, 20 musicals have gone to Broadway (including Man of La Mancha, Annie) and 75 new musicals have been launched. Now celebrating 49 years, Arizona Theatre Company (ATC) boasts the largest subscriber base of any performing arts organization in Arizona, with more than 130,000 people each year attending performances at the historic Temple of Music and Art in Tucson, and the elegant Herberger Theater Center in downtown Phoenix. Each season of carefully selected productions reflects the rich variety of world drama – from classic to contemporary plays, from musicals to new works, as audiences enjoy a rich emotional experience that can only be captured through live theatre. Touching lives through the power of theatre, ATC is the preeminent professional theatre in the state of Arizona. Under the direction of Artistic Director David Ira Goldstein, ATC operates in two cities – unlike any other League of Resident Theatres (LORT) company in the country.

ATC shares the passion of the theatre through a wide array of outreach programs, educational opportunities, access initiatives and community events. ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

David Ira Goldstein this season celebrates his 24th season as Artistic Director of Arizona Theatre Company. In that time, he has produced and/or directed over 200 mainstage plays, workshops, readings, and presentations including acclaimed appearances by the Royal National Theatre of Great Britain and the Theatre Royal Bath. He received the 2010 Leader of the Year Award in Arts and Humanities from the Capitol Times and the 2003 Governor’s Arts Award as Individual Artist for his contributions to the arts in Arizona. This season he will direct Disgraced and The Santaland Diaries for ATC. He has directed over 40 mainstage productions for ATC ranging from classics to new plays to musicals, including Next to Normal, The Sunshine Boys, Hair, Much Ado about Nothing, My Fair Lady, Valley Song, The Illusion, The Pajama Game, Side Man, [title of show], How I Learned to Drive, Wait Until Dark, Xanadu, The Mystery of Irma Vep, Scapin, The Two Gentlemen of Verona, The Boys Next Door, Shadowlands, Fully Committed, The Pirates of Penzance, H.M.S. Pinafore, Willi, Dreams from a Summer House, Other People’s Money, The Heidi Chronicles, Noises Off and A Midsummer Night’s Dream, as well as many world premieres including The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini; Sherlock Holmes: The Final Adventure (winner of the Edgar Award from the Mystery Writers of America); Inventing van Gogh, Rocket Man, Private Eyes, Over the Moon and Dracula by Steven Dietz; and Ten Chimneys, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (Edgar Award nominee) and Sherlock Holmes and the Adventure of The Suicide Club (Edgar Award nominee) by Jeffrey Hatcher. Mr. Goldstein has been a guest director at theatres all across the country including Arizona Opera, Pasadena Playhouse, Berkeley Repertory Theatre, Seattle Repertory Theatre, Florida Stage, Center Repertory Theatre, Kansas City Repertory Theatre, Northlight Theatre, San Jose Repertory Theatre, Village Theatre, Geva Theatre Center, Laguna Playhouse, Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, Mixed Blood Theatre, The Children’s Theatre Company in Minneapolis, Alaska Repertory Theatre, and Illusion Theatre. His musical A Marvelous Party: The Noël Coward Celebration, which originated at ATC, has played extensively across the U.S., winning many awards including four Jeff Awards in Chicago (including Best Director), the Elliot Norton Award in Boston, several Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle Awards, and the Los Angeles Drama Critics Award for Best Production. Before coming to Arizona, Mr. Goldstein was Associate Artistic Director of ACT Theatre in Seattle. His many productions there included Glengarry Glen Ross, Hapgood, Breaking the Silence, Lloyd’s Prayer, the world premieres of God’s Country by Steven Dietz and Willi by John Pielmeier, as well as a joint Soviet-American production of The Falcon. He was Associate Artistic Director at Actors Theatre of St. Paul from 1983-86. Mr. Goldstein holds an M.F.A. from the University of Minnesota. He has been a visiting instructor and director at ASU, University of Washington, University of Minnesota, and University of Northern . He has served as a panelist for the National Endowment for the Arts, Theatre Communications Group, Arts Midwest, and the Arizona, Minnesota, Oregon and Washington State Arts Commissions. Mr. Goldstein is a proud Union member of the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society and Actors’ Equity Association. He is married to KJZZ radio announcer Michele Robins. They share their home with their dogs and cats: Rio, Rocky, Cary, Reggie, Dexter, and Benny.

THEATRE INFORMATION

THE TEMPLE OF MUSIC AND ART The Temple of Music and Art is a beautifully refurbished 1927 theatre, built in the Spanish Colonial style that flavors so much of our city. ATC has identified the following services and policies to ensure your comfort and enhance your experience at the theatre.

THEATRE POLICIES Latecomers will be seated only at an appropriate and predetermined break in action. In order not to disturb patrons who are already enjoying the performance, latecomers may be seated in alternate locations until intermission. As a courtesy to our patrons and the actors, the use of cameras and recording devices is not permitted within the theatre. Please restrict cellular phone use to the courtyard only. Children under five are not permitted in the theatre during performances. Emergency calls may also be made to the House Manager’s direct line: 520-884-4868. Smoking is not permitted anywhere within the building. Designated smoking areas are located in the front of the theatre only. In the event of smoking onstage, a sign will be posted in the lobby.

SPECIAL SERVICES The theatre is equipped with an in-house infrared transmission system for use by patrons with partial hearing loss or limited range of hearing. Complimentary assisted listening headsets are available prior to every performance at the Box Office. Please be prepared to leave a driver’s license or other form of identification while using your headset. Every production is available in American Sign Language. For information on the dates of our ASL performances, please contact the Box Office. An in-house FM broadcast system is used to provide a running audio description of the movement and activities onstage for patrons with limited vision. Pre-show tactile tours of the backstage area and a pre-show narration about our building, the performers, and interpretive information about the play itself are available upon request. Contact the Box Office to make your reservation for the audio described performances. Coordinated with the action onstage, those in open-captioned seating will be able to read the play’s dialogue displayed in large green letters on an LED screen. For open-captioned performance dates, contact the Box Office. Large print and Braille are available for all performances in the House Manager’s office in the lobby of the theatre. Accessible seating is available via the Box Office for all performances. If you would like seating assistance at the theatre, please contact the House Manager at 520-884-4868.
