The Beatles revolution- ized the recording process using technology to achieve completely unprecedented sounds and arrangements. Until then, popular music recordings were simply faithful reproductions of a live performance. Over the past fifty years, recording and production techniques have advanced so far that another challenge has arisen: it is now very difficult for performing artists to give a live performance that has the same impact, complexity and nuance as a produced studio recording. -

I examine how song and dance – sites of aesthetic difference within the musical – can warp time and enable marginalized and semi-marginalized fans to imagine different ways of being in the world. Musical numbers can complicate a linear, developmental plot by accelerating and decelerating time, foregrounding repetition and circularity, bringing the past to life and projecting into the future, and physicalizing dreams in a narratively open present. These excesses have the potential to contest naturalized constructions of historical, progressive time, as well as concordant constructions of gender, sexual, and racial identities. While the musical has historically been a rich source of identification for the stereotypical white gay male show queen, this project validates a broad and flexible range of non-normative readings. -

Copyright by Sarah Sugarbaker 2009 Abstract In April of 2009 the Ohio State University Theatre Department produced Godspell, a musical originally conceived by John‐Michael Tebelak with music by Stephen Schwartz. This production was built and technically rehearsed in the Thurber Theatre, and then moved to the Southern Theatre in downtown Columbus, OH. As the scenic designer of this production I developed an environment in which the actors and director created their presentation of the text. Briefly, the director’s concept (Appendix A) for this production was to find a way to make the production relevant to the local population. Godspell centers around the creation and support of a community, so by choosing to reference the City Center Mall, an empty shopping center in downtown Columbus, the need for making a change as a community was emphasized. This environment consisted of three large walls that resembled an obscured version of the Columbus skyline, inspired by advertisements within the shopping center. Each wall had enlarged newspapers that could be seen under a paint treatment of vibrant colors. The headlines on these papers referenced articles that the local paper has written about the situation at the shopping center, therefore making the connection more clear. -

135 Chapter 6: Professional Foundations Theory Becomes Practice I moved to New York and started a new life in a very strange city. Chappell Music secured an apartment for me in the London Terrace complex in Chelsea near the Hudson River. It was a monumental architectural structure with an indoor swimming pool, underground garage, and an observation deck on the roof overlooking the river. All of my energy was focused on getting Elizabeth I (Foster & Spangler, 1972) written and up and running off-Broadway by spring. When I was not working on the show, I went to theatre events and performances and tried to network with recent graduates of CMU seeking their fame and fortune in New York City. Elizabeth I (Foster & Spangler, 1972) was scheduled to open off-Broadway at the Sheridan Square Theatre the end of March. However, the production already running in that venue was extended, and suddenly this off-Broadway theatre for which our production was designed was not available. The backers came to a rehearsal and decided the show was so promising that we would take it directly to Broadway where the Lyceum Theatre was available. We opened for previews on March 28, 1972, and the pressure was on. The set and staging as designed for the thrust (three quarter in the round) stage at the intimate Sheridan Square was no longer feasible. How were we to fit that production into a large proscenium situation? We rehearsed long and hard to bring back the intimacy lost in the transfer. I was not responding well to the stress. -
