Appendix 1 the World of Cinema in Argentina
Appendix 1 The World of Cinema in Argentina A revelation on January 17, 2002. I am headed to the Citibank on Cabildo Street, where I have a savings account. I try to enter the bank but cannot because of the number of people waiting. So I give up on my errand. I cross the street to return home, and from the sidewalk facing the bank I see, for the first time, the building in which it is housed. The familiar is made strange; shortly after, it becomes familiar again, but in a slightly disturbing way. I recognize the building’s arches and moldings, its fanciful rococo façade. I recognize the Cabildo movie theater, in which I saw so many movies as an adolescent. Although I have been coming to this bank for years, I have never before made this connection. I know movie theaters that have been transformed into video arcades, into evangelical churches,1 into parking garages, even into bookstores. Yet I knew of none that had become a bank. All my savings were housed in a space that had been shadows, lights, images, sounds, seats, a screen, film. I remember that around the age of sixteen, I saw Robert Redford’s Ordinary People (1980) on the same day as Alain Resnais’ Last Year at Marienbad (1961) in the Hebraica theater. Two or three movies a day (video didn’t exist then) in which almost everything was film, film, and only film. These are the adolescent years in which cinephilia is born: a messy love, passionate, without much judgment. -

Many of the local productions that have had the greatest popular success – Fabián Bielinsky’s intricately plotted Nueve reinas/ Nine Queens (2000), for example, and Marcelo Piñeyro’s graphically violent Plata quemada/Burnt Money (2000) – capitalize on the dizzying plot twists, dynamic action sequences and highly colloquial dialogues of 1 1 See Foster Hirsch, Detours and Lost the heist film and neo-noir genres, drawing on the styles cultivated by Highways: a Map of Neo-Noir directors such as Bryan Singer, Christopher Nolan and Quentin Tarantino (New York, NY: Limelight, 1999), and Ronald Schwartz, Neo-Noir: in Hollywood during the 1990s and early 2000s. the New Film Noir Style from This diverse group of recent Argentine crime films, which I will Psycho to Collateral (Lanham, MD: collectively refer to as the ‘new policiales’,2 has given a new twist to Scarecrow, 2005). ‘ ’ ‘ ’ 2 The term implies a police conventional narrative tropes such as the perfect crime , the last job , and procedural, but is often used to ‘the big score’. Also, thanks to my nieces Malena and Olinda, without whom my interest in their home country would be much less visceral. My sister Lena, her husband, and her in-laws Chicho and Alicia, as well as Alicia’s brother Juan Massini, have been of great logistic help during my travels to Argentina as well as providing insightful commentary on the country’s history and current events. My parents, Alice and Anthony, have provided much-needed emotional support and economic assistance as well as intellectual stimulation, and Amelia Tippit has given me bountiful love, technical support, and editorial commentary, as well as serving as an important source of information regarding U.S. politics and history and U.S. television. Additionally, I want to thank the members of my committee, all of whom have encouraged me to follow a path of investigation that until recently would not have been within my department’s scope of study. -
