ABSTRACTS IN ORDER OF INTERVENTION Panel 1: Amitav Ghosh – Thursday 11.30 – 13.00 Auditori Routes Beyond Roots: Alternative Ecological Histories in Amitav Ghosh's Sea of Poppies Maria-Sabina Draga, University of Bucharest This paper will attempt to read Amitav Ghosh's novel Sea of Poppies as an account of “world histories from below” (to use Antoinette Burton's term, 2012) and take the debate further through positioning the idea of writing alternative histories of the colonial times within an ecocritical context. While the need for such rewritings has always been a central preoccupation of postcolonial literature, the recent tendency (shared by Ghosh) has been to look at history from increasingly local, individualised perspectives. I will examine Ghosh's tracing of routes and connectivities across the Indian Ocean at the time immediately preceding the opium wars, focusing on the consequent reconsideration of human relationships and hierarchies in a post-human perspective. This perspective cuts across boundaries established by caste, social class, biology and geography, as well as by the colonial system, which Ghosh has long been interested in reimagining. While on board the Ibis identities become deterritorialised and fluid, they are disconnected from their various roots and paths established by rigid culturally conditioned frameworks. Connections are established between the human and other forms of life, forming a continuum across the trade routes of the Indian Ocean, which becomes a fluid space of rebuilding identities. I will position my discussion within a theoretical framework informed by Bruno Latour's concept of a politics of nature, Donna Haraway's nature-culture negotiations and Sangeeta Ray's studies of ecological intimacies. -

Nada melhor do que a arte - neste caso, o cinema - para provocar a reflexão e os estudos necessários para se humanizar situação tão sofrida e difícil de lidar, tanto pelos profissionais quanto pelos familiares e pelo paciente. Cada vez mais as artes vêm sendo utilizadas no ensino e no aprendizado das áreas do comportamento humano, nas escolas. Da mesma forma tem sido muito utilizada na terapêutica do sofrimento psíquico. AN IRONIC DREAM OF A COMMON LANGUAGE FOR WOMEN IN THE INTEGRATED CIRCUIT This chapter is an effort to build an ironic political myth faithful to feminism, socialism, and materialism. Perhaps more faithful as blasphemy is faithful, than as reverent worship and identification. Blasphemy has always seemed to require taking things very seriously. I know no better stance to adopt from within the secular-religious, evangelical traditions of United States politics, including the politics of socialist feminism. Blasphemy protects one from the moral majority within, while still insisting on the need for community. Blasphemy is not apostasy. Irony is about contradictions that do not resolve into larger wholes, even dialectically, about the tension of holding incompatible things together because both or all are necessary and true. Irony is about humour and serious play. It is also a rhetorical strategy and a political method, one I would like to see more honoured within socialist-feminism. At the centre of my ironic faith, my blasphemy, is the image of the cyborg. A cyborg is a cybernetic organism, a hybrid of machine and organism, a creature of social reality as well as a creature of fiction. Social reality is lived social relations, our most important political construction, a world-changing fiction. The international women's movements have constructed 'women's experience', as well as uncovered or discovered this crucial collective object. This experience is a fiction and fact of the most crucial, political kind. -

Brief Course Description In this literature course, we will take an exciting journey through Chicana/o Latina/o Literature. We will explore how this literature affects, documents, and creates Chicana/o Latina/o identities, politics, and the epistemologies/subjectivities of Chicana/o Latina/o authors in the United States. Through our journey we will use novels, short stories, poetry, performance, screenplays, comedy, spoken word, theatre, essays, music, and film to examine the diversity of themes, issues, and genres within the "Community" and the legacy and development of a growing “Chicana/o Latina/o Cultural Renaissance." We will also use critical performance pedagogy to engage particular problems in the literature and in the community. Through group/team work, community service, and interactive lectures and discussions we will delve into the analysis, accessibility, and application of Chicana/o Latina/o literature. We will ask questions around the issues of--and intersections between--gender, race, ethnicity, sexuality, class, language, religion, tradition, colonization, access, citizenship, migration, culture, ideology, epistemology, politics, and love.
