  • Floating Jews” - the Luftmentsh As an Economic Character
“Floating Jews” - The luftmentsh as an economic character Nicolas Vallois* and Sarah Imhoffb aCRIISEA, Université Picardie Jules Verne, Amiens, France, [email protected] (corresponding author) bReligious Studies and Borns Jewish Studies Program, Indiana University, Bloomington, United States, [email protected] 1 “Floating Jews” - The luftmentsh as an economic character Abstract. The Yiddish word “luftmentsh”, literally “air-person”, refers to petty traders, peddlers, beggars and paupers. The word appeared for the first time in Yiddish literature in the 1860's and began to be used by economists and statisticians in the 1880's-1890's. The case of the luftmentsh is particularly interesting because of the interplay of religion, gender, antisemitism, and economics. This article focuses on the term luftmentsh in economic and statistical discourse in the first part of the 20th century as a case study of the fundamental intertwining of economics and literature. We characterize the luftmentsh as an “economic character”, i.e. as an economic-statistical category associated with a complex imaginary borrowed from Yiddish literature. We show that this economic character popularized an influential yet ambivalent image of Jewish masculinity at work, as well as offering a way to reconsider antisemitism in the history of economic thought. Keywords: Jewish history, literature, economic character, antisemitism. JEL Codes: B10, B41, Z12. 2 Introduction “Luftmentsh” (plural luftmentshn) is a compound word in Yiddish: “luft”, meaning “air”, and “mentsh”, meaning “man”, “person”, or “human being”.1 Literally an “air-person” or “air- man”, the word has been used to refer to Jewish petty traders, peddlers, beggars, and paupers in 19th-20th century Eastern Europe.

  • Towards a Cosmopolitan Account of Jewish Socialism Class, Identity and Immigration in Edwardian London Ben Gidley
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Birkbeck Institutional Research Online Towards a Cosmopolitan Account of Jewish Socialism Class, Identity and Immigration in Edwardian London Ben Gidley This article reflects on the historiography of Jewish socialism in Britain by arguing that we cannot understand it without attending fully to both its local context and its transnational and specifically Jewish context. Although the article focuses on Edwardian Britain, the argument speaks equally to other times and places, and indeed for other comparable non-Jewish diasporic radicalisms. In anchoring my argument in Edwardian Britain, I will try to show that the particularities of British socialist intellectual culture, as well as the wider social, cultural and political context in which socialism developed here then, gave a particular shape and form to the varieties of socialism which flourished among Jewish immigrants in London, Leeds, Manchester, Glasgow, Dublin and other cities û but also that the particular cultural traditions and transnational networks in the (mainly Yiddish-speaking) Ashkenazi Jewish world gave them a particular content. The historiography of Jewish socialism in Britain There is a rich historiography of immigrant socialism and of working class Jews in Britain. This includes an earlier Yiddish-language historiography,1 as well as a body of work emerging after the turn in the 1970s to a ‘history from below perspective’, which foregrounded previously neglected dimen- sions of the migrant experience and in particular the dimension of class.2 There is also an important body of socialist history that has touched on the experiences of Jewish activists.3 However, much of this literature attends only to one of the two primary contexts, the national or the Jewish.

  • Changes in the Law and Sometimes a Complex Re-Evaluation of Political Posi- Tions
156 Reviews era1 individualist notions of art as property, and were sometimes responsible for changes in the law and sometimes a complex re-evaluation of political posi- tions. The supposed role of art and artifacts in bolstering the claims of nation- al identity is shown to be far more convoluted than either contemporary nation- alists or recent historians and museum specialists have supposed. Similarly, categorical understandings of gender, and to a much lesser degree, class, are shown to imbricate claims about art and property in a manner that belies easy social designations of cultural institutions. In her analysis Bailkin asks some fascinating and provocative questions, and complicates our understanding of culture and its relationship to politics. Indeed, she successfully adds the cultur- al realm to the story of the "crisis" of liberalism. Arguably, however, one of the real strengths of her analysis - the demon- stration of how the ambiguities of liberal claims about cultural property were debated outside of the realm of political theory - is also one of the book's lim- itations. For Bailkin finds no way to connect the debates in the press and among the agents in her cases, with the ongoing refashioning of liberal ideas by intellectuals and political activists in other realms. The "new" liberal thinkers, Fabians, and even populist liberals are part of the backdrop, but are rarely if ever present in her narratives. So at times the book reads quite like Dangerfield in that all the challenges to the liberal conceptions of citizenship and cultural property seem to be coming from without, when clearly Liberal thinkers them- selves were also trying to reformulate the liberal tradition from within.

Henry Hollander Bookseller, Catalogue 17 - About This Catalogue 11/15/2005 07:17 PM Henry Hollander Bookseller About Catalogue No. 17 Yiddish Books This catalogue represents my current Yiddish book selection and my current level of education in Yiddish language and bibliography. Transliteration continues to be a difficult issue. I have tried to standardize my work, but the books and the language resist the effort in a variety of ways. Perhaps it is better to admit to myself that this language, Yiddish, a Jewish language, is as impervious to uniformity as the people who spoke it and speak it still. Catalogue 17 supercedes Catalogues 7 and 8. Feel free to inquire about titles from those older catalogues. I will do my best to supply the titles listed. The old prices, however, are retained only for reference purposes. Normally I remove superceded catalogues from my web site, but because information on Yiddish books is so scarce on the Internet, I felt that it would be useful to keep them available. There are many names in those catalogues that appear nowhere else on the Internet. I continue to purchase Yiddish books in all areas. If you have Yiddish books that exceed your needs and are in good condition, please feel free to contact me. We buy locally, nationally and internationally.
