This Free marking doesn't conform to any of Oxley's listings. One of the most important items of the pre-stamp period, and of remarkable quality.

Nothing is known of the origin or purpose of the embossing. However, it is almost certain that the Ceylon authorities would have been aware of the introduction in 1838 of embossed prepaid lettersheets in New South Wales (generally regarded as the world's first issue of postal stationery). This embossing may well have been intended to fulfill the same purpose, though it would have been somewhat redundant on mail marked "FREE". 4,000

That having been said, it is a very challenging subject. The Proud collection includes the finest array we have seen of this material, far surpassing Geoff Kellow's collection that Gary Watson sold in the mid-1980s. Neither Proud nor Oxley (the better reference for this subject) provides rarity ratings. In our experience, relative values can be at least approximated by reference to the size or remoteness of the town, and the number of years the office was open. It should also be noted that associated datestamps are usually much scarcer than the cancels: they rarely exist off-cover, whereas many of the cancels are common on loose stamps. Our postmark gradings are explained on page 6.

Again, rarity is often related to the size and remoteness of an office, and the period for which it was open. Proud provides earliest (ERDs) & latest (LRDs) recorded dates which are very useful but not necessarily indicative of rarity. A 20 year usage period might suggest that a marking is common but may mean that only two examples 20 years apart have been noted. On the other hand, some markings recorded for short periods are readily available. Collecting of KGVI period postmarks has been advanced by the recent publication of David Horry's "Encyclopaedia" on the postmarks of the reign. While an attempt is made at providing rarity ratings, the author's unfortunate methodology of listing markings by "type" makes his book rather difficult to use. However, whichever way one views the situation, it is undeniable that Ceylon datestamps offer the enthusiast boundless opportunities for research and discovery.

Also some Money Order & other special use types. As should be expected, the quality of the strikes varies but it is generally fine to very fine with numerous superb examples noted.
