Richard Wernham Richard Wernham has more than thirty-five years of experience in the global wealth management industry and is currently the Chairman of the Soutterham Group. Richard began his career as a lawyer with Torys LLP where he specialized in securities and corporate law before founding Global Strategy Financial Inc. which was one of Canada’s largest independent mutual fund companies at the time of its sale in 2000. Richard has worked with leading financial services companies around the world including having served on the board of Rothschild Asset Management. Throughout his career in the investment industry Richard has been an active member of both the academic and arts & entertainment communities. Richard was a Special Lecturer in Law at Trinity College (University of Toronto) from 1977-1994 and currently holds appointments in support of leading academic institutions including Greenwood College School, Lakefield College School, Massey College (University of Toronto). Together with his wife Julia, Richard also provides significant financial support to the academic community including having funded the Richard Wernham and Julia West Centre for Learning at Upper Canada College. In 2001 Richard and Julia founded Greenwood College School which is now recognized as one of the leading co-educational independent schools in Toronto. In recognition of their contributions to education, Richard and Julia were awarded the Robert L. Payton Award by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education in 2010. Also in 2010, Richard was named the Canadian Scot of the Year by the Scottish Studies Foundation. Richard has a long involvement in entertainment and the arts which includes providing both professional and philanthropic support. A former Director of Atlantis Communications Inc, Richard currently serves on the Board of Directors of Blue Ant Media Inc. as well as holding the position of Governor of the Royal Ontario Museum. He is also involved in numerous other enterprises within the entertainment industry including that of Innes Lake Entertainment Inc. Founded by his sons Nicholas and Simon Wernham, Innis Lake Entertainment Inc. is a film production company. .

ANNUAL REPORT & DONOR TRIBUTE 2015-16 1 A CARING KCS COMMUNITY Paul Vessey, KCS Chair of the Board of Governors’ 2015-2016 Closing Speech: I fell in love with this school eight long years ago when my daughter Brigid suggested to me one morning during her first week at KCS that Miss Murphy thought I was old enough to let Brigid walk by herself down the hall to her grade one class, and my daughter Brigid apparently agreed. I discovered immediately KCS was pretty good at educating me as a parent in addition to educating my daughter. The love affair only grew over the years as I discovered an educational environment where everyone cares. Parents, teachers, administrative staff, volunteers, and of greatest importance, our students. The entire place thrives on the singular concept of continuous improvement. Every year as I drive home from these closing ceremonies I could honestly say the school was a better place than the previous year. I always had the confidence, as I do now, that next year will be even better. How does KCS consistently improve upon itself? It starts with leadership. Derek Logan and his senior administrative team are never satisfied with the status quo. Over the years I observed this team put on a clinic on how to be effective leaders. There is one leadership quality in particular I observed consistently over the years that always impressed me. They rarely made decisions by choosing the easy path, which invariably involved little personal or organizational risk. When appropriate they took the tougher route, sometimes controversial but always seemed to work out in the longer term to make a big difference in the quality of our school.

A Broken Ladder: Part I The Composition of Smith Commerce 1 Smith Transparency Project (www.smithtransparencyproject.com) Preface Objective This document aims to provide objective data and best estimates to inform discussion, inspire reflection, and catalyze change at the Smith School of Business and beyond. Smith School of Business Involvement The Smith Transparency Project approached the Smith School of Business in Fall 2019 and asked them to provide relevant and available data to aid this initiative. The initiative (and accompanying asks) were initially supported and encouraged by the school. However, this support was later withdrawn due to a lack of bandwidth. The Smith School of Business recommended that this project be completed on an independent basis. Methodology and Validity The data and analysis provided in this document represents solely publicly available social media, census, and geographic data and information disclosed through a voluntary survey delivered to the Class of 2021 official Facebook group. Additionally, this team is comprised of 4 Commerce students with a limited background in socioeconomic research. The team recognizes the above limitations and suggest that future users of this document acknowledge these limitations. Analyses of high school-level information includes both international and domestic students (i.e., tuition fees), whereas socioeconomic analyses applies solely to domestic students (i.e., average family income). Further, the team welcomes and encourages discussion and improvement to this analysis. Specifically, the team hopes for the Smith School of Business and other related organizations to publish similar and additional analyses or information pertaining to this topic. Board Chair’s Message The 2008 / 2009 school year is now under way and, in my fourth year as your Chair, I continue to be inspired by the talented and committed members of the Board of Governors with whom I am hon- oured to serve. This past year our Board committees have been particularly active in their various responsibilities. Despite our Governance Committee being relatively recently established, we are making great strides in this area. The committee has been looking at best practices as identified by the Canadian Independent School community to ensure that SHS achieves excellence in all levels of governance. Through the leadership of Sally Hannon, our goal has been to maintain our unique school culture and enhance our Board’s effectiveness. Good governance practices allow us to make effective decisions with a focus on getting things done with the least amount of road blocks. This year marked the official close of our very successful “Discover the Future” capital campaign. This campaign led to the creation of The Discovery Centre which provides facility excellence in the areas of science, art, technology, and music.
