THE MISSION AND VISION OF THE STERLING HALL SCHOOL The Mission of The Sterling Hall School is to offer a secure environment for the education of boys in mind, body, and spirit. Our supportive community and small classes nurture and challenge our students to become critical thinkers, self-directed learners, and successful contributors. We are committed to doing everything possible to ensure that SHS graduates excel academically and are recognized for their personal qualities, ability to lead, and determination to make a contribution to their communities in the 21st Century. We are also committed to becoming the destination of choice for families seeking a school that is a leader and innovator in elementary education and in the character development of young boys. As we look to the future, we are exploring the option of expanding our school to the secondary level. A task force has been put in place to study the need for, and impact of, such an expansion.

Board Chair’s Message

As I reflect back on my four years as Board Chair, I am both proud and amazed at all that we have been able to accomplish as a Board and as a community. The 2008 / 09 school year had a particularly busy agenda as we continued to execute on a number of important initiatives with an eye on the future of the school. As you know, all businesses and enterprises were rocked by the worldwide financial crisis over the last year. The measure of each institution is how well it has been able to weather this challenging time. I am pleased to report that The Sterling Hall School not only made it through the storm intact, but has emerged stronger than ever.

A financially sound school

Both the Finance and Advancement Committees developed risk management plans that accounted for an anticipated decline in enrolment as a result of the economic crisis. Fortunately for us, these downward projections did not materialize. With astute financial planning by our Finance Committee, headed by John Stevens, the school was able to marshal resources and deliver a budget surplus, despite the downturn. Our growing reputation also helped us through the crisis, and our enrolment is currently at 98% capacity – 305 boys. The Sterling Hall School Foundation made its first investments in the equity markets in early March and, SHS has made it through the thanks to a prudent investment strategy, we realized a 3.3% economic storm intact, and rate of return. This is a remarkable achievement given this is setting its course towards year’s climate. an even brighter future. The members of the Property Committee have been working to secure the land on which SHS currently sits. They have been in discussion with the Land Corporation and the Toronto District School Board and are continuing negotiations for the purchase of this land. While we are on a very long-term lease with the TDSB, ownership of our current site, together with our previous purchase of land situated just west of SHS, will further strengthen and protect our future. The Technology Committee’s decision to invest substantial time in enhancing our school website resulted in up-to-date information for parents and allowed us to better portray SHS to both our current and potential families. The Committee also continues to investigate and implement best practices in technology for the education of our boys.

An evolving school

The Strategic Planning Committee has established a Task Force that will continue to work toward a decision on whether a should be a part of SHS’s future. They also hosted a retreat last spring that brought together thought leaders in our community to provide input on the future of our school. The valuable information they collected formed the basis for Board approval to move this project forward, while continuing to focus on preserving the culture and strength of our elementary school. It is interesting to note that over 90% of CAIS schools have a secondary component today, with many having begun as elementary-only institutions. Of the eight elementary- only CAIS schools, six are in Ontario. Of these six, four are seriously considering a similar evolution. We will continue to assess our competition in all aspects of the services they provide in order to ensure we remain competitive. All the accomplishments of the past year can be viewed in the broader context of what the school has achieved over the last decade. The growth in enrolment, the physical expansion of the

school, the addition of outstanding facilities like the Music Centre, the Art Studio, the Science Lab, and the Discovery Centre – all have been completed in the context of a well-conceived growth strategy designed to preserve and strengthen the school and its unique culture. I have marveled over the years at the dedication and commitment of the SHS community to support and foster these initiatives.

A strong Board

I would like to recognize and thank the following retiring Board members for their contribution to SHS: Alison Noble, Robbie Pryde, and Jeff Moody. I would also like to congratulate John Stevens, your new Board Chair, and thank the Governance Committee who seamlessly handled this transition. I have been privileged to work with a strong and dedicated group of people who make up the SHS Board of Governors. Each of them brings individual strengths and as a Board they work together tirelessly to make The Sterling Hall School the best that it can be, for our boys today and for others tomorrow. As I step down as your Chair, I am confident that I am leaving the school in a stronger position than when I first joined the Board. I am also confident that your next Chair, John Stevens, is ready and able to lead our great school into the next exciting chapter in our history. SHS has always been blessed with a talented pool of potential Board members and leaders. My decision to step down was made significantly easier knowing that Board leadership has been entrusted to John’s very capable hands. It has truly been my honour and pleasure to serve The Sterling Hall School these last eight years and to work closely with Principal Ian Robinson and his talented team of Faculty and Staff. You are at the right place, we are on the right track – spread the word. All the best,

Kevin Sullivan SHS Board Chair

Principal’s Report

I have had to replace my copy of the SHS Strategic Plan a number of times. It’s not because I am hard on publications or books – I love them, as our library at home attests – but my constant referral to the pages of this vital document eventually defeats its spine. With its four directional pillars, this really is a document that deserves frequent attention. Concentrating on the “Excellence in Program” section, I read over again the nine strategies listed there in order to determine how our score card reads one year on. On all nine counts, SHS has certainly progressed. I’d like to take it one step further, however, and consider whether there are additional achievements in the academic realm that we have attained. As is the nature of progressive schools where best practices are the goal and change is the norm rather than the exception, much growth has occurred at SHS. Let me give you some initiatives that are not specifically mentioned in our Strategic Plan, but are now in place: > The Sterling Institute brushed itself off and became a living, vibrant entity and a tribute to the diligence and inspiration of those at SHS, now and previously, who contributed so much to its creation and its scope. Espousing the merits of “best practices in boys’ education” is our number one goal and is on our lips every day. > SMART Boards (including one in SK) and LCD projectors have become a far more integral part of our classrooms. Often this is thanks to the generosity of our families. > The SHS Professional Development program continues apace – four of us were at the International Boys’ Schools Coalition conference in New Zealand in July, where three of us ran workshops. Our primary aim remains > With parental permission, we have formed an ensuring that the academic academic research team to track the performance of experience offered to our our graduates at their secondary schools. students continues to stretch > We have our first dedicated Drama room. and challenge and, at the same > I have appointed new specialist teachers in French time, support and enable. and Social Studies at the Intermediate Division level – Grade 6 to 8. > The five-day timetable has been revamped and improved, and now includes an afternoon recess for Primary students. This has helped greatly with late-in-the-day academic focus and concentration.

Moving on from academics, what other firsts have occurred?

> Seeing the photo of an SHS boy on the cover of the Qantas Airline in-flight entertainment guide – as my wife Jennifer and I were travelling to the IBSC Conference in Napier, New Zealand – what a surprise! > “Dads and Lads Breakfast” led the recent social scene. We had hoped for 150 or so to attend. As the floor of The Eaton Shier Gym creaked beneath the feet of more than 400 dads and lads, an instant tradition was created. Yours Truly serving pancakes is another first – but what fun! > Plastic water bottles have disappeared permanently from SHS. > The title “Agents of Change” has become common parlance for the boys who sit on Student Council as Prefect and Captains of Citizenship. > In the world of our Alumni, The White and Blue magazine was resuscitated and will be an annual publication. > Our first Alumnus to join a Board Committee – KC Daya, who graduated in 1994 – has joined the Task Force investigating the possibility of an SHS Secondary School. Welcome, KC!

> Jason Love was the first alumnus to marry followed by KC Daya and Wesley Pang who was married in New York in October, 2009. > Katie Nicoll and her three crew members came 16/35 in the Rolex International Women’s Keelboat Championship in October in a J22. > Joel Brough was be an Olympic Torch Bearer on December 1 in Baie Comeau, Quebec; she represented Canada in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics in Field Hockey. > The annual Founder’s Day/Terry Fox Run – SHS was the top fundraising school in the world for the fourth consecutive year!

As I continually assess and reassess with the leadership team, the Faculty, and the Staff, the focus flickers from one special area to another. Our primary aim remains ensuring that the academic experience offered to our students continues to stretch and challenge and, at the same time, support and enable – the goal being strong preparation for Grade 9. Rest assured that our teachers are fine advocates as they guide and direct your sons in every part of our curriculum and program. In the final analysis, I am proud of our hard-working team and of the fact that we have a destination school where the Students, the Faculty and Staff, and the Parents are genuinely happy to be on a daily basis.

A farewell tribute to Kevin Sullivan, Chair of the SHS Board of Governors

Although this is most definitely bitter-sweet, it is my honour and privilege to write a tribute to the work of retiring Board Chair, Kevin Sullivan – who is retiring in the sense that he has finished his term of office, not in terms of his outgoing, supportive personality! Over the 14 years that I have been at SHS, it has been my privilege to work closely with three Board Chairs: Andrew Dalton, Pat Meneley, and Kevin Sullivan. SHS has gone through a series of phases as it has grown and matured, and, as an institution, we are indebted to these three men. Kevin’s contribution can be observed in every aspect of school and Board life. As members of the SHS community, Kevin and Sandy Sullivan’s generosity has left a massive legacy in the form of The Sullivan Music Centre. As a Board Chair, Kevin was always mindful of the work of all of the committees, though perhaps most evidently of Finance and Governance, taking particular care to ensure, firstly, that the school was in good financial shape and, secondly, that the Board was conducting itself in the fashion most likely to benefit the school. Kevin’s humour, synopses of previous discussions, knowledge of when to encourage or discourage discourse, strategic and creative thinking, ability to effect positive change, constant encouragement, and support of and appreciation for the efforts of his Board members are only some of the gifts that he contributed. The SHS Board of Governors remains in excellent hands because his successor, John Stevens, will continue this tradition of outstanding leadership. Even though Kevin’s sons have left SHS, it is indicative of his integrity and belief in our school that he has agreed to continue to play an important role on the SHS Foundation Board. We applaud him and are grateful for his selfless, unstinting effort. Thanks to Kevin and others like him, it is clear that our school remains in safe and capable hands and the future appears to be very encouraging.

Report from the Chair of Advancement

I am pleased to report that as a result of the ongoing generosity of our community, we were able to meet the fundraising goals set out by the Advancement Committee for The Sterling Hall School. Even during the challenging economic environment that we experienced last year, our community continued to respond to the needs of educating our boys. Through the leadership of Mike Boland and Mary Dawn Thomson, who acted as Chairs of our Annual Giving Campaign, we were able to exceed our goal – both in dollars and participation. I would like to thank them for their leadership on the campaign and also congratulate Mike Boland, who is newly appointed to the Board of Governors. As the Board is currently engaged in determining the priorities for the next phase of the development of SHS, this year our focus continues to be on Annual Giving. We have three families who have generously volunteered their time and their names to the campaign. Jim and Jennifer Beqaj will be chairing the campaign for current SHS families, Ellen and Graeme Watt will chair on behalf of new SHS families, and Sally Hannon and Howard Barton will chair for our Alumni families. I look forward to witnessing the success of this talented group of volunteers. I would also like to recognize the contributions made by departing Advancement Committee members Robbie Pryde, Jeff Moody, and David Fleck. I am pleased to welcome Jane Even during the challenging economic environment Reucassel as the newest member that we experienced last year, our community of the Advancement Committee. responded to the needs of educating our boys. This past year we have also been engaged in widening our reach to ensure that more parents are aware of The Sterling Hall School as a prime option for educating their sons. Promotion through various publications, new partnerships, and the implementation of our new website are all tools that we have used to advance the SHS message. We also continue to develop our fairly young Alumni network through various events and publications. I would like to thank The Sterling Hall School community for its continued support. Through your gifts of financial support and volunteer hours, you have continued to make our school a great place to be a boy!

Report from the Chair of the Finance Committee

The Sterling Hall School has completed another solid financial year – no small feat in the recent economic climate. An increase in the excess of revenue over operational expenses, combined with solid support from the school’s fundraising efforts, increased the net assets of the school from $11,312,013 to $11,618,260. The deficiency in revenue over expenses of ($713,544) was the result of the Board’s decision to transfer $1,500,000 to The Sterling Hall School Foundation. These funds are being held in a Capital Accumulation Fund in anticipation of the purchase of 99 Cartwright Avenue and other facilities improvements. The school continues to enjoy a strong and stable financial position through a combination of healthy enrolment, sound management, and the ongoing support received from an active and caring SHS community. This vital support enables the school to continually improve and upgrade its programs, buildings, and grounds. Update from The Sterling Hall School Foundation

The Sterling Hall School Foundation was established in 2005 as a public foundation to financially support the activities of the school and to provide financial security for its future. The Foundation receives assets, both donor-directed and otherwise, to support a broad range of the school’s requirements. Through the efforts of the Advancement Committee and the generosity of The Sterling Hall School community, the Foundation raised over $150,000 in the year ending June 30, 2009. These donations include commitments made to the Discover The Future Campaign and additional funds raised by the school throughout the year. The Foundation manages the funds under its administration with a view to both the short and longer-term needs of the school, and at June 30, 2009, the total net assets of the Foundation exceeded $2 million. For most of the year, the Foundation’s funds were invested in short-term instruments available to support the school’s immediate needs. Fortunately, we did not feel any of the effects of the economic downturn in the financial markets experienced by most Foundations. In the latter part of the year, through our investment management firm, a portion of the Foundation assets were invested in a balanced investment fund. As the funds under management grow, it is the Foundation’s intention to continue to diversify its investments into Fortunately, we did not feel any other securities. of the effects of the economic Members of the SHS community who wish to view downturn experienced by most the audited financial statements of the Foundation may Foundations. contact the Business Office. On behalf of the Foundation, I would like to thank Pat for his commitment and support of both the School and the Foundation. Greg Watson was elected to the Board at the AGM. Ways to Support The Sterling Hall School

Annual Giving

All Annual Giving contributions are used to enhance every aspect of learning and teaching. With support from our community, we can continually add to each and every boy’s experience at SHS. Annual Giving makes up the difference between what tuition covers and the actual cost of running our school. Such gifts are usually unrestricted (meaning that donors allow the school to spend the funds on what it deems to be necessary). This year, Annual Gifts were directed toward the following areas: The Sterling Priority Fund, Arts & Languages, Athletics, Homeroom Enhancements, and Science & Technology.

Gifts-in-Kind

Gifts of goods are accepted on a case-by-case basis. These gifts are appraised by an independent third party and receipted for fair market value. This year, The Sterling Hall School gratefully accepted gifts-in-kind that ranged from electronic equipment to sports team gear.

Scholarships

The Robert Burns Memorial Scholarship VALUE AS AT JUNE 30, 2009 $19,796.16 This Scholarship was started in 2000 to honour the memory of the late Dr. Robert Burns, a distinguished member of the SHS community. This scholarship is awarded annually to a boy who exhibits a passion for learning and a commitment to excellence in all interests. The boy must also show promise following the example of Dr. Burns. This year’s recipient was Gavin Lifman.

SHS Faculty / Staff Scholarship Fund VALUE AS AT JUNE 30, 2009 $54,032.51 Annual Giving donations from SHS Faculty and Staff are directed to a Scholarship Fund for boys from Grade 4 to 7 who have attained an 80% average or are on the Honour Roll/Academic Achievement List. In addition, the boy who receives this award is an all-around participant in school life and has displayed resilience, independence, and responsibility. This year’s recipient was James Ellis.

The Mrs. Reeves Scholarship VALUE AS AT JUNE 30, 2009 $34,083.80 The Mrs. Reeves Scholarship was established in June 2008 and is awarded to a boy who has true potential but just needs encouragement to believe in himself. Mrs. Reeves, former Executive Director of Advancement at SHS, always saw the “good” in every boy and this award is a statement of the school’s belief in the recipient. The prize is awarded to a boy in Grade 3 to 7 in order for the award to take effect during the recipient’s remaining time at SHS. The scholarship was awarded for the first time in 2009 to Eric Noble-Marks.

“We value questions over answers, skills over knowledge and effort over achievement. SHS allows boys to be boys but we also teach them to respect themselves, others, and the world around them. It is this emphasis on character that helps them to grow into the type of young men I would be proud to have as sons.” SHS FACULTY 55115_SHS_AR_2009:MSHS_AR_2006 11-26-2009 9:41 PM Page 16

SHS Parents Association Report

The Sterling Hall School Parents Association (PA) is a vibrant, dedicated group of parents who engage in events and activities to celebrate and support the school. This past year, more than 70% of SHS families volunteered at SHS. Not only is this a sign of the parents’ deep commitment to our school and our boys, but it also shows the school’s desire for parent involvement. The PA mandate is fulfilled through a variety of events and services. It is very common, on any given day, at any time of day, to see parents helping out around the school. In 2008-2009, the PA provided support in the Shark Shop, Library, and Art Studio, where our volunteers have regular shifts. “If you know how to stand on your own two feet, know when to compete and when to cooperate; how to watch out for your classmates, how to cheer and acknowledge their accomplishments, know when to give them the gears and know when to stop; if you lead by example and care about others inside the school and out; if you’re curious, if you’re willing to experiment with something new, and if you try your best at whatever you do…then You ARE a Sterling Hall Boy.”
