The NEON Festival will be held Thursday and Friday from 5 to 10 p.m. in honor of Norfolk's new arts district. | The Virginian-Pilot Norfolk's new arts district holds its coming out party with NEON Festival The Virginian-PilotOctober 15, 2015 NORFOLK The city's new arts district holds its coming out party - the NEON Festival - Thursday and Friday from 5 to 10 p.m. The free festival gives the district, New Energy of Norfolk, a chance to showcase artists, artworks and performers, and places for us to hang out and maybe find good eats and something to whet our whistle. Art exhibitions, large-scale murals and neon and light installations will be added to NEON's arts and performance venues. Local and national performers and musicians will entertain at district venues and along the streets. Granby Street, from Virginia Beach Boulevard to Brambleton Avenue, will be closed to vehicular traffic from 5 to 10 p.m. Friday. The event coincides with Norfolk Visual Arts Week. Here are some of the highlights. (For a full schedule, visit www.neonnfk.com/festival and www.norfolk publicart.org.) ____ THURSDAY At 5 p.m. Mayor Paul Fraim will kick things off by unveiling the Cementiscope artwork at The Plot, 768 Granby St., at the corner of Granby and Olney Road. The Plot will be a hub during the festival for games, food trucks, pop-up shops from local vendors and -friendly performances, including two from the Virginia Stage Company tonight. 5 to 10 p.m., NEONing the Chrysler: A Celebration of the Arts District Chrysler Museum of Art, One Memorial Place. The museum will present a dramatic light exhibition on its exterior. The Chrysler Museum of Art and the Glass Studio will host Third Thursday with and a beer garden featuring O'Connor Brewing Co. The Third Thursday After Party will be held from 8 to 10 p.m. at Work | Release, 759 Granby St. 5 to 10 p.m., Pilot Art Outside the Box The Plot, 776 Granby St. Winners of The Pilot's newspaper box competition will be displayed on both nights. 5 to 10 p.m., The Inert Gas Show: An Exhibition of Glass and Noble Gasses 731 Granby St. The show debuts neon works by contemporary artists. Students from Alfred University in New York, State in Indiana and local legends are coming together. 6 to 8 p.m., Startup Night by Hatch Harrison Opera House, 160 E. Virginia Beach Blvd. (Second-floor lobby) Local entrepreneurs get 15 minutes to present projects and participate in a Q&A session with Hatch, a local business incubator, in front of an audience. 8:30 to 9:30 p.m., "Boheme Unplugged" Harrison Opera House Virginia Opera presents a reduced modern version of the famed opera "La Boheme." ____ FRIDAY 6 to 9 p.m., free shows at the Push Comedy Theater Push Comedy Theater, 763 Granby St. 7 to 8 p.m., Governor's School for the Arts and Todd Rosenlieb Dance Performance Granby Street Students from Governor's School for the Arts Dance Department with Todd Rosenlieb and the Visual Arts Department will lead a neon parade featuring wearable art and bright neon . 8 to 10 p.m., Alchemy After Dark: Haunted NEON 801 Boush St. Alchemy brings back its Haunted Gallery, only this time on the streets of the NEON District. 9 p.m., LAVA presents Demons and Shy, Low The Parlor on Granby, 765 Granby St. Demons and Shy, Low close out the festival at The Parlor.
