February 28, 2021 – Second Sunday of Lent

First Reading: Genesis 22: 1-2, 9a, 10-13, 15-18 Yahweh gives Abraham the ultimate test, that of sacrificing his favorite son Isaac. Observing Abraham’s unquestioning obedience, Yahweh calls off the killing, accepting the sacrifice of a nearby ram. He also promises Abraham abundant rewards, including the growth of a great people as his descendants. Second Reading: Romans 8: 31b-34 St. Paul provides his readers a solid basis for their hope, specifying along the way the unique power of ’ intercession for us with His Father. He also asks “If God is for us, who can be against us?” : : 2-10 The transfiguration of Jesus was such a dazzling experience for Peter that he nervously proposes setting up three tents so that the three persons from the world beyond could stay and prolong it. But immediately after, Jesus brings the three apostles down to earth to complete their earthly mission. Reflection: Today’s gospel presents a summary of the Christian life. The mountain experience is what we are doing today as we gather for worship and seek nourishment, while the valley symbolizes where we go after today’s celebration to live out our Christian vocation. The valley is the place of holiness where we take up the cross to follow Jesus in service to others. So we ask ourselves:  Have you ever had an experience that changed your outlook on life for the good?  Did you see God’s hand in that experience?
