ABSTRACT Heritage buildings and cities provide us with strong visual documents pertaining to regional history and form, comprising the basis of local culture. In the contemporary world scene, the built form cultural heritage seems to be generally ignored into oblivion. The example of Bangladesh as a small country with rich traditions, cultural heritage and long historical background is studied as a case from the viewpoint of Canadian heritage preservation practices. This thesis articulates the process of transformation as the vehicle for adaptive reuse of heritage buildings in our contemporary condition. It includes the investigation of events, theories and methods of transformation in the context of Canadian contemporary practice. Examples of contemporary Canadian projects a re studied in the transformation and integration of the old with the new to parallel the scenario observed in Bangladesh. iii Reproduced with permission of the copyright owner. Shikazono 1Laboratory of Geochemistry, School of Science for Open and Environmental Systems, Graduate School of Science and Technology, Keio University, Yokohama, Japan 2Department of Agricultural Chemistry, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, Bangladesh 3Graduate School of Environmental Studies, Tohoku University, Sendai, Japan Received 7 January 2011; revised 17 June 2011; accepted 3 August 2011 ABSTRACT: Water and sediment samples were collected from 20 location of the Buriganga river of Bangladesh during Summer and Winter 2009 to determine the spatial distribution, seasonal and temporal variation of different heavy metal contents. Sequential extraction procedure was employed in sediment samples for the geochemical partitioning of the metals. Total trace metal content in water and sediment samples were analyzed and compared with different standard and reference values. Concentration of total chromium, lead, cadmium, zinc, copper, nickel, cobalt and arsenic in water samples were greatly exceeded the toxicity reference values in both season. Concentration of chromium, lead, copper and nickel in sediment samples were mostly higher than that of severe effect level values, at which the sediment is considered heavily polluted. On average 72 % chromium, 92 % lead, 88 % zinc, 73 % copper, 63 % nickel and 68 % of total cobalt were associated with the first three labile sequential extraction phases, which portion is readily bioavailable and might be associated with frequent negative biological effects.

But, I am fortunate to have found friends, colleagues, and mentors who have inspired me to make this laborious task far from arduous. It was Frederick M. Asher, my advisor, who inspired me to turn to places where art historians do not usually venture. The temple city of Khajuraho is not just the exquisite 11th-century temples at the site. Rather, the 11th-century temples are part of a larger visuality that extends to contemporary civic monuments in the city center, Rick suggested in the first class that I took with him. I learnt to move across time and space. To understand modern Vrindavan, one would have to look at its Mughal past; to understand temple architecture, one would have to look for rebellions in the colonial archive. Catherine B. Asher gave me the gift of the Mughal world – a world that I only barely knew before I met her. Today, I speak of the Islamicate world of colonial Vrindavan. Cathy walked me through Mughal mosques, tombs, and gardens on many cold wintry days in Minneapolis and on a hot summer day in Sasaram, Bihar. The Islamicate Krishna in my dissertation thus came into being.

    Mainamati: Greatest Assemblage of Ancient Buddhist Settlements Zinat Afrose Introduction: The Mainamati-Lalmai range, an isolated low, dimpled range of hills dotted with more than 50 ancient Buddhist settlements from the 8th to 12th centuries A.D., runs through the heart of the Cumilla district. The wealthiest region of Bangladesh is Mainamati, Cumilla, which is home to the majority of the country's heritage sites. Shalban Bihara, located almost in the middle of the Mainamati Lalmai hill range, is made up of 115 cells arranged around a spacious courtyard with a cruciform temple in the centre facing its only gateway complex to the north which is similar to that of Paharpur Monastery. Kutila Mura is a charming Buddhist establishment located on a flattened hillock about 5 km north of Shalban Vihara within the Cumilla Cantonment. Three stupas stand side by side, symbolizing the Buddhist 'Trinity,' or three jewels, which are the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha. Charpatra Mura is a small oblong shrine located 2.5 kilometres northwest of the Kutila Mura stupas. The shrine is approached from the east via a gateway that leads to a large hall. Copper plates, gold and silver coins, and 86 bronze artefacts are among the many items on display at the Mainamati site museum. The Terracotta Temples of Baranagar in Murshidabad, West Bengal offer a very insightful vantage point in this regard. The elaborate works of terracotta on the facades of these temples patronized by Rani Bhabani during the mid-eighteenth century possess immense narrative potential to reconstruct the history of the area in the given time period. The portrayals on various facets of society, environment, culture, religion, mythology, and space and communication systems make these temples exemplary representatives for studying narrative art. While a significant portion of the temple facades depicts gods, goddesses, and mythological stories, the on-spot study also found a substantial number of plaques observed mainly on the base friezes representing the engagement of women in various mundane activities. This study explores the narrative intentions of such portrayals. The depictions incorporated are validated with various types of archival evidence facilitating cross-corroboration of the sources.

Whether the product is an item of clothing; furniture; a household item we use every day or something we put in our homes to satisfy our aesthetic desires, we put more value on products that have a human behind its creation. All forms of Art are valued the most. Art, thankfully till now, cannot be factory produced.

Since early sixties, of necessity, industries of various kinds started to spring up slowly. It appears in a survey that ecological imbalance is being caused continuously due to discharge of various industrial wastes into air and water bodies. It has also been found that the intensity of pollution caused by the factories and industrial units depend on their type, location, raw materials, chemical effects, production process and discharge of gaseous, liquid and solid pollutants to the natural environment. All of Bangladesh's sewage and industrial wastes are flushed directly into Ganges and Brahmaputra Rivers. There are wide spread fears that as the region develops in industrial infrastructure, industrial pollution will accelerate, compounding the problems posed by raw municipal wastes. About 900 polluting industries in Bangladesh dispose of untreated industrial wastes directly into rivers, although the effluents contain 10 to 100 times the allowable levels permissible for human health. The Ganges-Brahmaputra delta is the largest delta in the world and the rivers contribute one-third of the global sediment transport to the world oceans. The rivers flow through 10 per cent global population and carry untreated rural, urban, municipal and industrial wastes to the Bay of Bengal.

    SANDESH India Association of Nebraska December 2014 2531 Shamrock Road Volume 1 Issue 12 Omaha NE 68154 This is our twelfth and final edition of Sandesh (the e-newsletter for IAN) for the year 2014. The publication committee is proud to have published a new edition of Sandesh every month this year. All the published editions can be found at http://www.indiaassociationofnebraska.org/Sandesh.aspx Every edition of Sandesh was comprised of three parts – an editorial, a highlight and a spotlight. The editorial featured messages from various committee chairpersons and it provided some information about the committees’ that comprise IAN and their function. In the highlight section, one event organized by IAN that month was featured and we aimed to provide a glimpse into the event. In the spotlight section we also worked on presenting the State series, which was aimed at being informational and provided some little known facts about many of the Indian states. This final edition contains a quick recap of the events in the year gone by and the operating budget for 2014.     Welcome To The Workshops Dear Colleague, Due to increasing demands for education and training in ultrasonography, World Federation for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology has established its First "WFUMB Center of Excellence" in Dhaka in 2004. Bangladesh Society of Ultrasonography is the First WFUMB Affiliate to receive this honor. The aims of the WFUMB COE is to provide education and training in medical ultrasonography, to confer accreditation after successful completion of necessary examinations and to accumulate current technical information on ultrasound techniques under close communication with other Centers, WFUMB and WHO Global Steering Group for Education and Teaching in Diagnostic Imaging. 23 WFUMB Center of Education Workshop of the World Federation for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology will be held jointly in the City of Dhaka on 6 & 7 March 2020.
