We begin the New Year 2021 by giving thanks and praise to God our Father, for all the January 24, 2021 blessings He has bestowed upon our parish and parishioners! As Blessed Solanus Casey said, “We thank God ahead of time” for all the graces He will continue to pour out to us. Third Sunday in Old St. Mary’s has been blessed to serve God’s people for 186 years. We extend a warm Ordinary Time welcome to all and pray that God’s peace fill your hearts and homes in this New Year! In today’s First Reading, God prompts the prophet Jonah to carry out His message in warning the people of Nineveh to turn from their wicked ways and repent, which they do. In St. Mark’s Gospel, the evangelist tells of Jesus’ invitation to Simon-Peter, Andrew, James, and John to discipleship in Him. They respond immediately, abandoning their fishing businesses and leaving their families — ultimately, sacrificing everything — to follow Jesus. Their acts considered radical in our Lord’s day would be considered just as radical in today’s secular society. As steward disciples seeking to deepen our relationship in Christ, we, also, must be willing to open our hearts to His true peace, joy, and happiness. Then, in a spirit of evangelization, we will be sent to spread His Good News to those we meet. This is our task as joyful missionary disciples. An organization that supports missionary discipleship is St. Paul Street Evangelization. Join a local team at streetevangelization.com. As announced last week, our second collection today will be the Annual Appeal for the Holy Spirit Fathers and Brothers Retirement Fund. The rising costs of health care continues to challenge religious communities to provide a quality life for their senior members. The Spiritan Fathers have served Old St. Mary’s since 1893 and this is a concrete opportunity to express your gratitude for their years of ministry here. This year we ask you to remember two long time pastors of Old St. Mary’s - Fr. Wayne Epperley and Fr. Ed Vilkauskas - who were both born into eternal life within the last several months. You may indicate your donation to the Spiritan Retirement Fund as a memorial donation in one or both of their names. Please use the envelopes provided. The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick is celebrated at Old St. Mary’s on the first Wednesday of the month. The next Anointing of the Sick will be Wednesday, February 3rd at 12:45 p.m. Old St. Mary’s hosts the Tridentine Latin Mass on the first Friday of each month at 7:00 pm. Friday, February 5th, we will have the Tridentine Mass at 7:00 p.m. If you have never experienced this beautiful Mass you may want to join us! If you have Mass requests for 2021, please submit them in writing to the Parish Office. If you are requesting specific dates and/or times, please include alternate dates and times to help us accommodate you in case of a scheduling conflict. A $10 stipend per Mass is the suggested donation. OLD ST.
