Amélia Óleo, segundo Dürk, sem assinatura, existente no Museu Imperial Um dia de gala no Primeiro Reinado A 31 de julho de 1830, aniversário natalício da imperatriz Amélia, realizaram-se grandes festividades no Rio de Janeiro, des- tacando-se a recepção ocorrida no Paço da Cidade e o espetáculo de arte realizado em teatro. Do acontecimento, têm-se notícia através de uma carta do general Tomás Guido à sua mulher. Deste mesmo personagem, divulgamos, sob o título de “Um salão do primeiro reinado”, no número IX do Anuário do Museu Imperial relativo a 1948, deliciosa carta do diplomata à esposa, descrevendo uma noite de festa na residência da baronesa de Cam- pos dos Goitacazes. Desta feita, o assunto não desmerece do primeiro, no sabor e na valia histórica. Na verdade, um depoimento dessa natureza, tor- na-se mais apreciável, quando feito por um estrangeiro, revestido de funções diplomáticas e contido numa carta íntima. O general Tomás Guido, investido da missão de ministro da Argentina no Brasil a 9 de agosto de 1828, fora um dos represen- tantes platinos que assinaram a Convenção Preliminar de Paz entre a República das Províncias Unidas do Rio da Prata e o Brasil. Permanecendo entre nós até 1831, voltaria ainda Guido ao Brasil como representante argentino em 1841, onde ficaria por nove anos, assinando com Honório Hermeto e Rodrigues Torres o Trata- do de Aliança entre o Brasil e a Argentina, de 24 de março de 1843, e por outro lado protestando contra o reconhecimento pelo Brasil da independência do Paraguai. Este o personagem que nos dá uma curiosa e detalhada des- crição de um dia de gala no Primeiro Reinado. Nessa carta à mu- lher, cuja cópia obtivemos agora do original existente no Arquivo General de la Nacion, de Buenos Aires, Tomás Guido descreve a etiqueta da corte brasileira observada no Paço da Cidade Ano 1952, Vol. 13 com a presença do imperador, da imperatriz Amélia, de dona Ma- ria II rainha de Portugal, altas autoridades e corpo diplomático. Não lhe escapa o ambiente, os indumentos e as jóias. O mesmo acontece quanto ao festival no teatro. Passemos assim à narrativa feita por Tomás Guido: “Rio de Janeiro Agosto 2/830 Mi amable Pilar, Aunque todavía no ha salido del Puerto la goleta Amelia en la cual ya están dos cartas mías p.a ti datadas el 28 y 30 de Julio próximo ant.°r preparo esta p.a q Calles Díaz, o Gauay muy próximos à dar la vela. Haremos un paréntesis à nuestras cosas para ocuparme por ahora en la descripción de la gran Gala que presentó esta Corte antes de ayer, como día de cumple años de la Emperatriz Amelia, por ser una de las mejores fiestas que aquí se conocen. Al amanecer una salva triple de Artillería en todos los Castillos y Buques de guerra fue el primer saludo de día de la Emperatriz: a los ocho de la mañana comenzaron a colgarse las calles por donde debia venir el Emperador con su comitiva del Palacio de S.n Cristobal, y à las doce y media se reunieron en el Palacio de la Ciudad el cuerpo diplomatico, los Grandes del Imperio, los Generales, los Dignatarios de las ordenes de caballeria, y todas las corporaciones que se ribalizaban en ricos trenes, unifor- mes, y decoraciones. Un inmenso gentío ocupaba la car- reta, y las dos entradas de Palacio à la espera de la familia imperial. A la una en punto llegó el Emperador à la plaza de Palacio en una gran carroza dotada con la Emperatriz a su izquierda, y escoltado p.r una hermosa guardia de caballería compuesta de los hijos de las primeras familias de la Corte. La carroza venia tirada por cuatro tiros de caballos riquisimam.te enjaezados. Tras de la escolta del Emperador venia la Reina de Portugal D.a Maria de Gloria en una carroza semejante 8 D. Seguían à este acompañamiento los carruajes de las Damas de la Emperatriz y de la Reina, y de los Chambelanes del Emperador. Una segunda salva de mar y tierra saludó a S.S. Mag.s Imp.s. Después de haber descansado un rato el Emperador, subió al trono con la Emperatriz que le daba siempre la derecha. Las Damas de palacio tomaron la izquierda de la Emperatriz, todas en pie, y en la misma testera en que estaba colocado el trono. Los Generales, los Ministros y Grandes del Imperio, y las principales corporaciones, se formaron a lo largo de la sala en uno y otro costado en tres o cuatro ileras de fondo. Y con intervalos proporcionados los alabarderos de la Guardia del trono. El Cuerpo Diplomático esperaba el aviso en la sala de los Embajadores y un tiro de cañon anunció que era llegada la hora del besamano. Inmediatam.e se apareció un Gentil hombre y aviso que S. M. esperaba a los Ministros extranjeros. El Nuncio apostólico tomó entonces la presidencia del Cuerpo Diplomático, le seguía inmediatam.te el Embajador de Rusia, el de Portugal, el Ministro de Buenos ay.s y los encargados de Negocios de las primeras potencias de Europa. En orden progresional fuimos entrando a la sala uno tras de otro, y al llegar el Nuncio al pie del trono pronunció una Arenga a nombre de los demás Ministros estranjeros con alusión al aniversario de Amelia, y después de dos Cortesías una al Emperador y otra à la Emperatriz comenzó a retirarse andando para atrás para no volver la espalda al trono, y cada uno de los Ministros repitió la misma ceremonia, menos la arenga. En este cumplim.t° hay tanto de japónico como de cómico, y tu dirás cual es la primera idea que debe ocurrir, al ver unas cuantas docenas de hombres formales, caminando a paso retrogrado por una larga sala donde necessariamt.e tropieza uno con otro. Vamos adelante. El Emperador estaba vestido de grande uniforme militar, bota granadera, pantalones blancos casaca azul espléndidamente bordada y decorado con cruces y placas 9 Ano 1952, Vol. 13 de brillantes. La Emperatriz con vestido de raso color violeta, bordado de realce de seda desflocada color de asco; cauda de terciopelo del mismo color y bordado, jubón de raso violeta con manga corta, brazo cubierto de encaje abultado de trecho en trecho hasta el puño, esclavina de encajes cubriendo el pecho, y gonna de terciopelo de color del vestido con flores y plumas blancas. Un riquísimo aderezo de brillantes compuesto de anillos, pulseras, pecha, caravanas, y collar completaban el adorno de la Emperatriz, cuyo semblante, aunque bien colorido y agradable participa de la frialdad de la Mayor parte de las mujeres del norte. De la sala del Emperador pasó el cuerpo diplomático à la de la Reina D.a Maria de Gloria, que situada en un testero con sus damas y Chambelanes, pero sin trono, esperaba el besamano. El Nuncio repitió la misma ceremonia con una arenga corta, y después de el, cada uno de los que componíamos la comitiva continuó su cumplido. Aquí el andadillo para atrás fue algo mas bufo por que siendo la sala mucho más larga que la anterior no era fácil acertar con la salida sin ver donde está la puerta. A Cuerpo Diplomático siguieron los Grandes del Imperio y demás concurrentes. La Reina llevaba un traje de raso blanco guarnecido de encajes, manga corta y pequeño descote: un hermoso adorno de brillantes en la cabeza, y los correspondientes cabos de pulseras, anillos, carabanas, pecha y collar. A las siete y media, concurrió al teatro toda la familia imperial: el Emperador daba la derecha a la Reina de Portugal, su izquierda à la Emperatriz y a la de esta se sentaron las Princesas y el Príncipe: las damas de Palacio, vestidas todas de blanco y con grandes plumages blancos en las gorras ocupaban la tribuna inferior del Palco del Emperador. El Teatro estaba iluminado con ricas arañas, y triple numero de bombas de cristal que el que se acostumbra a diario: los palcas nuevam.te empapelados, y con senefá corrida de coco rosado y celeste estreitado y guarnecido de plata. Las damas de la corte, todas sin excepción con plumaje blancos y los personajes 10 D. Maria II, Rainha de Portugal Óleo de Simplício Rodrigues de Sá, executado em 1827, existente no Museu Imperial Anuário do Museu Imperial del imperio cubiertos de bordados, formaban e, verdad una perspectiva magnifica. Se cantó la opera de la Gazza Ladra, en que se lució Bacaní como acostumbra. Un Baile Nuevo y preciosas decoraciones se exibieron por primera vez en aquela noche. Educators and social reformers looked to the schools for the preservation of established moral and social values, but the schools could not reshape the urban environment. As a result, the problems of city life remained. Massachusetts schools turned from effecting broad social reforms to preparing children to fulfil economic functions; vocational education replaced manual training as preparation for the real world. Educated first at home, then spending four years of secondary school in Bienne, he completed his elementary studies in Lausanne. Having adopted medicine as his profession, he studied successively at the universities of Zürich, Heidelberg and Munich; while there he extended his knowledge of natural history, especially of botany. In 1829 he received the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at Erlangen, and in 1830 that of doctor of medicine at Munich. Moving to Paris he fell under the tutelage of Alexander von Humboldt and Georges Cuvier, who launched him on his careers of geology and zoology respectively. Until shortly before this time he had paid no special attention to the study of ichthyology, which soon afterwards became the great occupation of his life, if not the one for which he is most remembered in the modern day.

The book balances the national and state stories. Massachusetts played a critical leadership role in the national campaign: among other things, it was the site of the first national woman’s rights convention, the headquarters of the American Woman Suffrage Association, and the home of the Woman’s Journal, the nation’s leading pro-suffrage newspaper. Until the final years of the movement, suffragists waged a state-based campaign: they sought to persuade states to amend their constitutions to enfranchise women and thereby ensure that critical number of representatives and senators in the United States Congress would be beholden to women voters.

First Professor Agassiz, whom Thoreau had mentioned in WALDEN, gave serieses of public lectures in downtown Boston about the Godliness of human enslavement, defending his friends the Southern slavemasters against the unrighteous attacks being made upon them by people like Thoreau and Darwin who did not understand the exigencies of human biology. Then Professor Skinner took time off from raising his daughter in a cage, and time off from developing an early generation of “smart bombs” in which pigeons were trained to peck at screens inside a nose-cone until they blew themselves up, to write a book WALDEN II which was twice as good as Thoreau’s WALDEN. The burden of WALDEN II is that human freedom is a wrong goal. We should all be training each other by behavioristic operant conditioning to be good little cogs in a friction-free local social engine.

An diesem Tag brachte Frau Anne Vanolli dem Archivar Pierre-Yves Favez eine Metallkassette mit der Bitte um Begutachtung des Inhalts: historische Dokumente. Der Archivar informierte den Direktor des Kantonsarchivs, Gilbert Coutaz. Der bat Frau Vanolli um nochmalige Ueberstellung der Kassette. Der Inhalt solle genauer geprüft werden. Am 29. Oktober 2008 stand sein Gutachten: die Dokumente seien wertvoll. Das Kantonsarchiv schlug einen Kaufpreis vor. Daraufhin wurde dem Kantonsarchiv am 13. November 2008 eine weitere Dokumenten- Sammlung zur Begutachtung vorgelegt. Und wieder war der Wert erheblich. Der Kaufpreis wurde entsprechend erhöht. Am 24. November 2008 war man sich einig. Es handelte sich um Dokumente aus den Archiven der Familien Wagnon (Vagnon), Mayor und Agassiz.

The Exchange has been developing ideas for water related facilities and public access to bring the inner harbor back into focus as one of Boston's greatest potential assets. Early in 1979, the Exchange drew up and published "A Plan for Boston Harbor" and a suggested perspective of a revitalized waterfront. This plan obtained the enthusiastic cooperation of Mayor White which led to the funding of the current project by the consortium of interests previously listed. The Exchange is in overall charge of this project, is the recipient of the funds, and provides administra- tive support and technical expertise. Carl Koch is President of the Exchange and Patricia Wells is an administrative assistant for the project. FELICIA REED CLARK Project director, providing administration, manage- ment of the participatory process and development planning, liaison with public and private interests, and continuing contributions to all phases of the project. Additional responsibilities include current development inventory and proposals for access, recreation, transportation, public-private actions and water-related uses.
