3 3. 2017 SPRING CONCERT SERIES SUNDAY, APRIL 2 ND 3 PM BUSTER WILLIAMS QUARTET featuring STEVE WILSON & LENNY WHITE POLLOCK CENTER FOR THE ARTS , 340 N 21st St., CAMP HILL PA

BUSTER WILLIAMS is a prodigious artist whose playing knows no limits. One of jazz's most valuable sidemen, Buster Williams has flourished through many periods of changing fashions in jazz. Best known since the 1980s for his solid, dark tone and highly refined technique on the acoustic bass, the jazz-rock generation knew him as the mobile anchor of Herbie Hancock's exploratory Mwandishi Sextet from 1969 to 1973. Buster has played, recorded and performed with jazz giants Art Blakey, , Jimmy Heth, Carmen McRae, Chet Baker, Chick Corea, Dexter Gordon, Erroll Garner, Wynton Marsalis, Herbie Hancock, McCoy Tyner, Nancy Wilson, Elvin Jones, , & Miles Davis, to name a few. Born Anthony Williams, the son of a bassist, Buster began his career in the late 50’s and has gone on to be a member of some of the seminal groups in the history of jazz - Herbie Hancock's Mwandishi sextet, Sphere (a Monk tribute group with Charlie Rouse), The Great Jazz Trio (Hank Jones, Tony Williams & Buster), The Timeless All-Stars w/ Cedar Walton & & the Jazz Crusaders. He has been a frequent guest at CPFJ concerts through the years.

STEVE WILSON has attained “first-call” status as a studio musician, concert performer and educator. He is currently Associate Professor at City College of N.Y, and on faculty at the Juilliard School. He was honored by New York University, recognizing his outstanding service in jazz education. A musician's musician, Wilson has performed on more than 150 recordings led by George Duke, , & Maria Schnieder among many others, as well as eight recordings as a leader. He was a member of the Dave Holland Quintet, and from 1998-2001 & was with Chick Corea's Grammy winning sextet "Origin". Wilson is one-half of a formidable duo with renowned drummer Lewis Nash as heard on their celebrated recording Dulogue, and he co-leads an elegant trio with pianist and bassist . Wilson also performs with several Grammy-winning ensembles: Maria Schneider Orchestra, Christian McBride , Billy Childs Quartet, Big Band, and the Buster Williams Quartet.

LENNY WHITE was born in . A self-taught drummer, he began his career in local groups, and was playing regularly with Jackie McLean in the late 1960s .In 1969, he appeared on Miles Davis' historic recording on Bitches' Brew and later in 1970 he played with on before joining Corea's and Azteca in 1972. . For five years, he recorded a number of with Return to Forever including the award winning and . When the group split up in 1977 White signed with the Nemperor label (via Atlantic) and recorded two albums as leader. White has played with a who's who of jazz including , , , , , and among others. As a member of Return To Forever during 1973-76, White gained a strong reputation as one of the top fusion drummers, but he was always versatile enough to play in many settings. Johnny O'Neal, born October 10, 1956 in Detroit, Michigan, is an American neo-bop jazz pianist and vocalist. His playing ranges from the technically virtuosic to the tenderest of ballad interpretations. Though unique in style, he is influenced by many jazz elders, including Oscar Peterson and Art Tatum. He has led many recording dates with jazz heavyweights such as Russell Malone and many others. He moved to New York City to perform with Clark Terry in 1981, and also landed a regular job at the Blue Note, accompanying such greats as Dizzy Gillespie, Ray Brown, Nancy Wilson, Joe Pass and Kenny Burrell. He was a member of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers for two years from 1982-1983 and made his Carnegie Hall debut in 1985.

On the recommendation of Oscar Peterson, O'Neal portrayed Art Tatum in the 2004 movie Ray, convincingly recreating Tatum's sound on the song "Yesterdays". A 2006 DVD "Tight" captured O'Neal at the height of his powers. In an interview, pianist Mulgrew Miller said, "In my generation of musicians there are two artists who are probably the most naturally talented. They both happen to be from Detroit. One is , the saxophonist. The other is pianist Johnny O’Neal. There are so many outstanding things about Johnny’s playing. Number one, the touch. Johnny has a million dollar touch. Very few people touch the piano like that to get that kind of sound and feeling. The other thing is his feeling of swing, which is so natural. Then there’s Johnny’s personality, so engaging. And Johnny can play a ballad like few people, if any. I’ve always held his talent in the highest regard, and I think he’s a very special artist." Pianist and jazz luminary Barry Harris stated, “ Johnny is a very special cat - if ever somebody sounded like Art Tatum, it’s him - he’s got it all.” Noted saxophonist Lou Donaldson called Johnny, “the king of the piano”.

We hope you will come out and hear this wonderful artist in the unique Capitol Room at the Harrisburg Midtown Arts Center - food and drink will be available in the concert’s cabaret setting... . These words describe very well our friend, Leslie Beamer, who has been coordinating our volunteer activities for several years now. She has decided that it is time for her to retire and pass the job along to another jazz lover. We love Leslie and will be sorry to see her go, but she has earned her retirement.

Our Volunteer Coordinator schedules our loyal and dependable crew of volunteers for all of our concerts, festivals and other events throughout the year. The job can be done from home with your own computer or you can visit the CPFJ office to make your contacts. Most of the communication is done through email, with a few phone calls necessary. On the day of the event, the VC will greet the volunteers at the venue and instruct them in their duties for that day. The VC then supervises the volunteers and acts as the troubleshooter for the day. Staff support is always available when needed.

If you love jazz and want to be more involved, give us a call at 540-1010.

MUSIC LOVERS BONANZA !!! . As many of you know, we recently received a large bequest of over 2,500 jazz CD 's and hundreds of LP 's from the estate of long time CPFJ member Joseph Shaw. We have been presenting the cd's for sale at our concerts, but limited table space has prevented us from showing all of this collection at one time. The complete collection has now arrived at our expanded office space where it may all be examined and purchases made. Call for an appointment after June 1 (717-540-1010) to shop the entire collection. Pricing for the LP 's will vary (these are mostly big bands and vocalists - some quite rare and in great shape). Most CD 's are sold at $5.00 per disc. Come visit us and add some great music to your collection - thanks for your support! If you have any records or Cds in good condition that you would like to donate, please call us. Donations to C.P.F.J. are tax deductible.
