Matr., 17: 97-106, 1992 Malacostratigraphical Investigation of the Late Quaternary Subsided Zones of Hungary FŰKÖH Levente ABSTRACT: The author briefly performs the ecelogical, biostratigraphical and malakostratigraphical elaboration of the Mollusc faunae of the most complete sequences and with the knowledge of the results gives the general concludes. During the investigation of the Hungarian Holocene Mollusc-fauna more and more and Important flat-land fauna became known, beside the faunae of the medium high mountain-ranges. The increase of these data enabled to attempt with full knowledge of the facts until now - giving outline history of the succession of the juvenile subsided zones with the help of malacostratigraphy. Because the ecological conditions of the species of our fresh-water fauna is less explored than the ecological conditions of the terrestrial ones,so such detailed analysis cannot be expected than have been made from the medium high mountain territories (FUKÜH, L. 1987). The faunal evolution of these territories (Fig. 1.) is approximately the same, it is why we made attempt to publish the fundamental Informations about courses of development and stratigraphical examinations. In the next part of this paper I Introduce to biostratigraphical-malacostratigraphical elaboration of the most complete sequences and with the knowledge of the results I give the general concludes. Anisus Vorticulus (Troschel 1834) (Gastropoda: Planorbidae) in Northeast Germany

ZETTLER Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research Warnemünde, Seestr. 15, D-18119 Rostock, Germany Abstract During the EU Habitats Directive monitoring between 2008 and 2010 the ecological requirements of the gastropod species Anisus vorticulus (Troschel 1834) were investigated in 24 different waterbodies of northeast Germany. 117 sampling units were analyzed quantitatively. 45 of these units contained living individuals of the target species in abundances between 4 and 616 individuals m-2. More than 25.300 living individuals of accompanying freshwater mollusc species and about 9.400 empty shells were counted and determined to the species level. Altogether 47 species were identified. The benefit of enhanced knowledge on the ecological requirements was gained due to the wide range and high number of sampled habitats with both obviously convenient and inconvenient living conditions for A. vorticulus. In northeast Germany the amphibian zones of sheltered mesotrophic lake shores, swampy (lime) fens and peat holes which are sun exposed and have populations of any Chara species belong to the optimal, continuously and densely colonized biotopes. The cluster analysis emphasized that A. vorticulus was associated with a typical species composition, which can be named as “Anisus-vorticulus-community”. In compliance with that both the frequency of combined occurrence of species and their similarity in relative abundance are important. The following species belong to the “Anisus-vorticulus-community” in northeast Germany: Pisidium obtusale, Pisidium milium, Pisidium pseudosphaerium, Bithynia leachii, Stagnicola palustris, Valvata cristata, Bathyomphalus contortus, Bithynia tentaculata, Anisus vortex, Hippeutis complanatus, Gyraulus crista, Physa fontinalis, Segmentina nitida and Anisus vorticulus. -

Andrzej Falniowski* Department of Malacology, Institute of Zoology and Biomedical Research, Jagiellonian University, Poland Abstract Hydrobioids, known earlier as the family Hydrobiidae, represent a set of truncatelloidean families whose members are minute, world- wide distributed snails inhabiting mostly springs and interstitial wa- ters. More than 1,000 nominal species bear simple plesiomorphic shells, whose variability is high and overlapping between the taxa, and the soft part morphology and anatomy of the group is simplified because of miniaturization, and unified, as a result of necessary ad- aptations to the life in freshwater habitats (osmoregulation, internal fertilization and eggs rich in yolk and within the capsules). The ad- aptations arose parallel, thus represent homoplasies. All the above facts make it necessary to use molecular markers in species dis- crimination, although this should be done carefully, considering ge- netic distances calibrated at low taxonomic level. The study used generally accepted malacological, faunistic, ecological, analytical, and statistical methods. As a result of research in the springs, 14 species of freshwater gastropods belonging to 2 subclasses, 5 families, and 10 genera were recorded. 7 of them are endemic to Central Asia. When indicators of biodiversity of mollusks were analyzed according to the Shannon index, it was found that the highest value was recorded in the springs besides the hills. According to the biotope of distribution and bioecological features, they were divided into cryophilic, phytophilic, pelophilic, and eurybiontic ecological groups. The mollusks, which are common in the springs, were divided into 3 groups according to their faunal similarity. The contribution of the Central Asian and European-Siberian species to the formation of the malacofauna in the springs of the Andijan region was significant. E-mail: [email protected] Recent studies on mating and copulation in pulmonates have provided a better understanding of a functional relationship between various aspects of their biology and have greatly advanced our knowledge of their reproductive behaviour. Here we describe the mating behaviour, copu- latory mechanics and genital anatomy of Hippeutis complanatus (Linnaeus, 1758), a Palaearc- tic freshwater pulmonates, and compare these results with those from Segmentina oelandica (Westerlund, 1885). In H. complanatus, the individual that initiates mating mounts the shell of the partner and crawls over its basal side to position itself at the shell aperture for intromis- sion. The copulatory connection is achieved by the preputium and its musculo-glandular ap- pendage (preputial organ) that attaches to the shell of the partner. Hippeutis complanatus and S. oelandica share a number of common traits in genital morphology and mating behaviour, most notably the unilateral copulation and the use of the preputial organ as a holdfast. These species also show some significant differences: the opposite orientation of the partners, chemi- cal stimulation in S. -

IV Boucot The sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous rocks of the Callahan, California area formed on, or adjacent to, a Lower Paleo- zoic island arc complex which has since been tectonically disrupted. Sandstone, shale, lithic wacke, chert, banded quartzite, siliceous mudstone, conglomerate, and limestone of the eastern Klamath belt were deposited from the Middle Ordovician through the Early Devonian on top of the peridotite of the Early? Ordovician Trinity ophiolitic complex.Shallow water deposition began in the Middle Ordovician with the Facey Rock Limestone.Sandstone, siltstone, and shale of the Moffett Creek Formation probably formed as turbidity flows adjacent to the arc and were later disrupted, possibly at shallow depths in a subduction zone.Other units in the Callahan area (Calla- han Chert, Gazelle Formation, quartzite of Squaw Gulch, siliceous mudstone of Thompson Gulch) may have formed in basins on the Moffett Creek Formation. The Moffett Creek Formation was derived from a primarily plutonic-metamorphic terrane, possibly a deeply eroded arc complex, while the overlying Gazelle Formation was derived from a primarily calc-alkaline volcanic source. Amphibolite and impure marbles of the Grouse Ridge Formation, which have an Early or Middle Devonian age
