ACTION ITEMS

AI – 1 – Submitted By: Scott Ingram First Reading

Any host of an Indiana Swimming Championship Meet that fails to take corrective measures on any technical aspects pointed out to them by the Official’s Chair or Technical Chair at a previous Indiana Swimming Championship at their next Championship Meet will be barred from bidding for an Indiana Championship Meet for two years. Clubs will be notified in writing no later than 1 month after the event.

(Example – Club ABC hosts a 2006 Divisional Meet and fails to comply with a Technical item. Following the 2006 Divisional Meet, the Technical Chair communicates the error and explains what needs to be done to address the situation in the future. Club ABC hosts a 2006 Long Course State Meet and has the same issue. They are now barred from bidding on the 2007 and 2008 Indiana Championship meets.)

Questions – What is an offense?

Arlene – stated that this needs to be a strong policy with plenty of documentation

SwimForce Report ƒ 2009 ConocoPhillips Summer Nationals & World Championship Trials: 1. LOC: The Local Organizing Committee last met on Tuesday, April 21. Plans are progressing at an appropriate pace. Many thanks to all from Indiana Swimming who are serving in leadership roles on the LOC. Also, thanks to our club co‐host Southeastern Swim Club for all the time and energy its members are contributing to the event. The LOC roster is included as an attachment to this agenda. Please take time to recognize and thank those folks who are involved in this event. The next committee meeting is Wednesday, May 20. 2. Schubert Reception: On Thursday, January 29, Mark Schubert, USA Swimming National Team Head Coach and General Manger, visited Indianapolis and participated in several pre‐meet promotional activities including a lunch with the Operation Water Safety Partners, a televised interview with Bill Benner for Inside Indiana (can view on event website at www.AllGreatRacers.com), and an evening kick‐off reception for the 2009 World Trials. Approximately 50 community and business leaders, along with area swimming supporters, attended the reception and dinner held in Scholar’s Hall at University Place Conference Center and Hotel. Coach Schubert gave a preview of this summer’s meet as well as relaying stories from last summer’s Beijing Olympics. Peter Bick put together a slide show of the last 25 years of events at the Nat which played throughout dinner and brought back many fond memories of former champions and competitions. The evening was a great success! 3. Ticket Sales: Online ticket sales are continuing on the event website at www.AllGreatRacers.com Daily tickets (one‐day tickets for prelims and finals of same day) went on sale Friday, May 1. The reserved seats (blue chairbacks) are nearly sold out. Obviously, many general admission tickets are still available. Please encourage your club members and friends to purchase their tickets now. Coming off the success of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, the event is going to be unique and exciting. Our members will want to be here! 4. Auxiliary Events: • There will be athlete autograph sessions each day in the USA Swimming Autograph Zone (gymnasium) from 4:30 – 6:00 PM. At least four athletes will be available each day. USA Swimming is in the process of finalizing the participating athletes. As soon as that is accomplished, we will be publishing a schedule for the Autograph Zone. • We have contracted with the Miss America Organization to have Katie Stam, the reigning Miss America from Seymour and a student at the University of Indianapolis, here on Saturday, July 11, for autograph signings, to sing the National Anthem in finals, and to present awards. We are excited to be able to bring in Katie and are actively searching for other local celebrities to participate on other days. • USA Swimming is sponsoring a Splash Bash on Saturday, July 11, from 2:00 – 4:00 PM in conjunction with the NBC broadcast that day. Stay tuned for more information to share with your club members and regions. The location will be either the NCAA Auditorium or the IMAX Theatre. Tony Young is working with Jim Fox, USA Swimming Marketing Coordinator, on this event. • USA Swimming is also sponsoring a Make a Splash with Cullen Jones clinic sometime during the week pending the finalizing of Cullen’s itinerary. Area community and business leaders will be invited to a

morning breakfast with Cullen and John Cruzat, USA Swimming’s Diversity Specialist. The clinic will follow the breakfast. We are working with USA Swimming to construct the invitation list for the community breakfast and the organizations that will be invited to the clinic. Tony will be the contact with Erin Greene, USA Swimming Communications Coordinator, on this event. • The USA Swimming Foundation Board of Directors will be meeting here during the event. • The VIP Reception will be held at the newly remodeled NCAA Hall of Champions on Wednesday evening, July 8. Polly Jameson and Leslie Osborne are co‐chairs of that event. 5. Site Visits: a. The site visit with the USA Swimming National Events Division was held on conjunction with the LOC meeting on Monday, February 23. In attendance were Dean Ekeren, USA Swimming National Events Director; John Wilson, Meet Referee; Nick Young, Great Big Events Sport Producer; Sandra Lopez, USA Swimming National Events Coordinator; and Mark Dodd, Dodd Technologies. Most of the visit focused on sport presentation and the venue set‐up and décor. The Nat will be “dressed up” similar to the design used for the 2003 Duel in the Pool. In‐house lighting and sound will not be used; both will be brought in. b. There will be another site visit with NBC on Monday, May 4. Attending from USA Swimming will be Dean Ekeren and Mike Unger along with Nick Young and Mark Dodd. c. On Monday, May 11, Matt Farrell, USA Swimming Chief Marketing Officer, and Jamie Fabos Olsen, USA Swimming Communications Director, will be here to finalize media plans and production for the event. TV spots will begin airing on WTHR in mid‐June. 6. Officials: All meet officials have been identified; there are 52 officials on the accepted list. Congrats to the following Indiana officials who were selected: Lucy Duncan (Assistant Administrative Referee), Win Gerde (Stroke), Bill Koss (Stroke), and Dick Duncan (Stroke). John Wilson from Athens, GA is the meet referee. 7. Club Opportunities: Opportunities for Indiana Swimming clubs have been revised and are posted on the event website. We are still searching for Volunteer Clubs for the Day for Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday. Kudos to Lawrence Swim Team and Carmel Swim Club for partnering as a Club for the day! Also, many thanks to the following teams who have purchased team sponsorships thus far: Brownsburg Swim Club, Carmel Swim Club, and Riverside Aquatic Club. We are currently striving to reach our goals for team sponsorships; this will be discussed under Old Business as the assistance of all BOD members is needed. 8. Volunteers: We are in need of volunteers in many areas. Please encourage club members, swimming enthusiasts, neighbors, and friends to complete the online volunteer application no later than Friday, May 15. The form and job descriptions are available at www.AllGreatRacers.com.

LSC Development: • Lynn and I are finalizing the requirements for our participation in the second round of the LEAP pilot program. The deadline is Friday, May 1. The only component yet to be submitted is our Policies and Procedures Manual. This should be completed on time by Friday. After we receive notice that we have achieved Level 1, we will begin work on the next level. • Thank you to all BOD members for their contributions to our Strategic Planning weekend on April 17 & 18. The weekend was highly productive and should set the framework for the next 3‐5 years for our organization. I look forward to the follow‐up as we work to achieve the agreed upon goals.

INDIANA SWIMMING BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING MINUTES OF THE MEETING – MAY 4, 2009 Location: Second Floor Conference Room (Pan Am Plaza Bldg) Time: 5:30pm

Personnel: I met with both Lynn and Tony for their mid‐year conferences. These meetings are a component of the annual personnel review process. Topics of those discussions will be shared with members of the Personnel Committee at a follow‐up meeting scheduled for Thursday, May 7.

Past General Chair – Mark Hesse – SCSC 1. Attended the ISI BOD Strategic Planning Retreat a. Developed job description for Past General Chair i. Past General Chair shall 1. Serve as a member of the General Chair’s Advisory Council 2. Serve a Chairman of the ISI Governance Committee whose responsibilities include: a. Recruitment and orientation of future Board and ISI Committee members b. Advising current Board on governance “best practices” c. TBD 2. Participated in two conference calls of the USA Swimming Gender Equity Task Force. Action items included: a. Adoption of mission statement: Identify existing challenges for women in the sport of swimming; and to identify ways to increase the number of women in leadership positions and their influence at all levels of the sport.

b. Acknowledgement of the lack of both empirical and anecdotal data along with the taking of committee members to gather said information c. Adoption of a statement opposing the combination of the Men’s & Women’s NCAA Championships: While the concept of a combined men’s and women’s NCAA swimming and diving championships might seem to have merit, there are several issues which have both short and long‐term implications if this proposal were to come to fruition. Some of these issues deal with the length of the meet. Others are concerned with the venue, increased missed class time, and the experience of the Student‐Athletes. However, the most important of all the issues is how this will affect opportunities for women in collegiate swimming.

A combined meet will most certainly prompt many institutions with separate programs to combine their teams. This will lead to an immediate permanent decline in the number of female head coaches in collegiate swimming. In addition, given the current statistics for combined programs, there will be a reduction in the number of female assistant coaches and an increase in the number of male assistant coaches. As members of the Gender Equity Task Force for Women in Swimming, we cannot endorse any action which would most certainly reduce the number of women involved in coaching collegiate swimming. We urge the Board of Directors to take a similar stand.

Divisional Meet (Crown Point, IN)‐discussed with several Reg 1 coaches about LCM state meet site selection: Overall consensus is that Region 1 coaches and teams want the LCM State Meets to be held at the Natatorium at IUPUI. State Meet (Indianapolis, IN)‐Met briefly with Jim Payonk and Scott Ingram, members of the site selection committee, individually to discuss the LCM State Meet Site and how Region 1 coaches felt about the process. Scott communicated to m that they were looking into options to ensure that the Nat would be the preferred site and hopefully the only site for the LCM State Championship Meets.

USA Swimming Disability Workshop (Colorado Springs, CO)‐I want to thank Arlene and the BOD for giving me the opportunity to attend the workshop. I went ahead and gave Samantha Robertson, Disability Chair, a copy of all info presented at the workshop.

USA Swimming Coaches Clinic (Crown Point, IN)‐Clinic went very well Scott Colby did a great job presenting new and old material. Q and A session at the end of day 2 stared a lot of good coaching interaction and idea sharing with each other. The Clinic not only presented new material, but gave some coaches a reassurance that they are doing the things they need to be doing to grow and develop a Championship caliber program. I was unable to attend day 3, prior commitment. Jim Voss, Duneland Head Coach along with Scott Colby, invited me to sit in on Scott’s LEAD presentation with the Duneland Swim Club. I was amazed at some of the knowledge and info that was there. I feel if there is some way we can take what is being done with these meetings and putting them into a clinic, for swimmers not just coaches, I think all teams throughout IN will benefit extremely! Scott’s drill presentation at the Monday portion of the Duneland meeting was really exciting. I want to Thank both Scott and Jim for letting me attend.

Along these lines, I gathered information on the past AGS Championship meet from both the committee and other various coaches throughout the state. Mostly brief positive feedback was given, except for a few key areas. a. The new swim suit legislation is still generating a large amount of heated discussion b. Corresponded with the Senior Committee several times in March regarding the new format for Short Course Senior State‐ its positives and negatives. I will be presenting Jim with legislative proposals based on the Senior Committee feedback.

Currently working with representatives from Purdue and Indiana University to create a 3 year rotational policy for the Summer Senior State meet. The goal would be to award the summer meet 6 years in advance and eliminate the need for a site selection bid process.

Met with Tony Young (sports development director) and Matt Papachronis (age group chair) on Wednesday, April 29 to discuss the performance goals and action plan from the April, ISI Board retreat. This committee’s goal is to provide some concrete input and leadership to the Board of Directors as to how Indiana Swimming can best proceed towards its performance goal of “having more 18‐under qualifiers, semi‐finalist and finalist than every other LSC at the 2012 Olympic Trials”. OFFICIALS / RULES: Hal Paul ‐ UNAT [email protected]

Regional Officials Chair positions for Regions 1(NW) and 2 (WC & SW) were up for reelection this year. Due to the fact that both incumbents were unopposed, there were no elections held this year. George Behrens and Dick Duncan will continue to represent their respective Regions for the next two years.

The Officials Committee met this winter prior to the Championship Meet season and made some minor changes to our Policies & Procedures: 1. If there is a position that is up for reelection, and no other candidates have submitted resumes stating intent to run for the position, then no election will be held for that position. Additionally, there will no longer be Write‐in candidates on any ballot. Resumes indicating intent to run for election MUST be submitted to the Officials Chair by January 30th. 2. It is being requested that anyone who is planning on holding a New Officials Clinic, that they contact Lynn at the Indiana Swimming Office and notify her of the date, location, and time. Lynn will then post it to the website. This way individuals who are looking for an opportunity to attend a clinic and contact the group holding the clinic. It has also been requested that upon the completion of a New Officials Clinic that a roster of attendees be forwarded to the office for cross referencing of on‐line test results and applications submitted. Your assistance with this will be greatly appreciated. 3. The subject of Apprentice Sessions was also reviewed. It has been decided that only officials seeking a Stroke & Turn apprentice session will be allowed to apprentice at any of the state level meets. All other positions will not be available for apprentice sessions. 4. The Indiana Official Standards have been revised to state that advancement requirements MUST be met in the sequential order to which they are written: a. Must attend a Clinic – New Officials (Technical) b. Must take and PASS test(s) (new or upgrading to starter/refer) PRIOR to doing any apprentice sessions c. Must obtain recommendations for Referee, and submit to respective Regional Chair (if upgrading to referee) PRIOR to any apprentice sessions. d. May not apprentice until above items are completed.

These topics have been discussed at each of the Referee Recertification Clinics held during this past Winter’s Championship Meet season. They have also been posted to the website, with the appropriate forms being updated. Swim suit legislation has received much discussion this past season. USA Swimming has published their Policies and Procedures regarding the granting of exceptions. They are posted on the USA Swimming website. Starting May 1, NO swimmer will be allowed to wear a non‐conforming suit without an Exemption Letter from USA Swimming. Please remember that the athlete is the age they are on the first day of the meet. Additionally, only those 12 & Under athletes entered in OPEN events will be allowed to wear a non‐conforming suit.

Congratulations to Lucy Duncan for being appointed to the USA Swimming Officials Committee.

Congratulations also to those Indiana Swimming Officials who were selected to officiate that this summer’s ConocoPhillips National Championships & World Championship Trials. They are: Lucy Duncan – Assistant Administrative Referee Dick Duncan, Win Gerde, and Bill Koss – Stroke & Turn

SWIMS TIMES RECON All winter times swum in IN meets have been loaded into SWIMS. Any coach/swimmer/parent should be able to run reports from the USA Swimming site to see their swimmer times/rankings.

WEBSITE Kent and I have been discussing some design/format changes for the website to make our information easier to find by our members. While we think our “filing” process makes sense, there are still items that could be clearer. Anticipate a May reveal with better functionality.

STATE MEETS March lived up to previous standards as being the busiest month for me. Proving the meets has been a bit easier, but there are still many many many entry times done at non‐USA Swimming meets. The process of clearing those still continues to be time consuming.

INDIANA SWIMMING BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING MINUTES OF THE MEETING – MAY 4, 2009 Location: Second Floor Conference Room (Pan Am Plaza Bldg) Time: 5:30pm

FINANCIALS I am still on “course” with more timely deposits. Lucy and I have spoken many times in recent weeks about some of our processing in the accounting software. She will be spending time in the offices on Thursday to tweak some of our documentation in the accounting software so that it’s more streamline. We’re both learning new things/ways to document since our non‐profit business is a bit different than retail.

AWARDS Hasty now farms out some of their awards productions. Our Divisional medals were actually produced in China. Our Open Water medal design is the same medal, different text. The Chinese workers definitely could not read our English and packaged many OW medals in with the DIV medal inventory. All 5 of our DIV hosts counted out their inventory pre‐meet, but until they actually opened up the packaging and unwrapped the neck ribbon (at the meet), did they realize that we had OW medals. Therefore, all 5 of our hosts were short medals. Since Tony was on a Tour de Divisional that weekend, he was able to take some overages we had here in the offices to help supplement their supplies. Many thanks to our patient awards chairs and awards recipients. It ended up that we only needed to receive 10 gold medals to give to our deserving athletes. Our hosts made those missing gold medals to their own club kids so that it would be easier to explain. Unfortunately, I’m still waiting for Hasty to receive the replacement golds from China that they promised me. I have been keeping our hosts up‐to‐date. I know I have anxious champions and I appreciate their understanding. Michele has completed the inventory of the awards that are not even used from Divisionals. There were almost 1,000 consolation ribbons not even used. We only order what the potential is. There are NOT full consol heats and therefore, the leftover ribbons. Additionally, there are many clubs that continue to not pick up their awards at the end of the championship meets. We changed the process to be that the host is not responsible for mailing those out to the clubs. Michele will be documenting in a spreadsheet those teams that did not claim their awards at the meets. I want a season‐to‐season account as I believe there are repeat offenders. If these coaches don’t pick them up at the meets for their kids (mostly consol ribbons), then these kids aren’t getting their awards until those coaches realize it (or if they do). I tend to bring envelopes with these consol ribbons to the House of Delegates meetings in October (6 months after Spring championship meets). Jen Ferguson and I were unable to coordinate our schedules for me to do a complete passing of the baton with regards to Awards Coordinator. However, I did update a very old document from previous awards coordinator files and met briefly with Jen at the Sectional meet. The spring awards (Top 10 from last year, Top Performer, IAR Record Breakers and Rookie Blankets) were all documented and presented at our state meets. While I did not attend the meets to help with the presentations, Jen was able to follow my very detailed information (as was the announcers with the scripts I penned). The only glitch to our ceremonies was the Rookie National blankets. This time, it was neither my fault nor Circle City Swimwear’s on the blankets not being available to present at the March state meets. I had sent CCS the list of blankets needed in early January. CCS placed an order via email with their supplier. Upon my inquiry of their availability for our presentations in late February, CCS learned that the email they sent to the supplier was sent to an employee on maternity leave who did not forward or read her emails. Therefore, the blankets were not distributed to our 25 rookie participants at the meets. We received them 2 weeks ago (before the Board retreat). I am working with Tony to help in hand‐delivering them to coaches or athletes he’ll see at Coach clinics or camps. The only area that I will still oversee is the pulling the raw data from SWIMS for the Top 10 times. Thanks to Gary Haley’s excel macros, the 20+ hours on formatting reports and generating the Top Performer points now takes about 30 minutes! YEAH! Thanks again Gary!! The second aspect of those Top 10 times is the printing of the certificates for the teams to distribute. That takes copier time, and only about 30 minutes of my time to put into team envelopes for distribution at state meets.

LEAP Arlene and I (mostly Arlene) have been working on completing step/level 1 of the LEAP program. Many of the 41 steps were completed by Arlene. THANKS! Some of the other areas are not quite clear and are very time consuming. One area that I was working on was loading our records into our IN Portal site. For those of you that don’t know….the IN Portal is a link on the USA Swimming website where a browser could access all of our meet results, our office information, and LSC records. It’s a separate link/process than simply linking to our LSC website. Sounds a bit redundant, but I see a bit of value in this portal. Back to the records….this is included is a requirement of LEAP, but by having them loaded, it will also give me reports on records broken with a few clicks of the mouse as opposed to me checking Senior State results files or running reports of top times and manually eye‐balling them against our records. While working on those records, I did find out that the IU kids in the past couple of years have been breaking 17‐18 & Open records that I didn’t catch. So, when I update the .pdf version of our records on our IN Swimming website, there will be many revisions. 15 | Page CORE VALUES: PERFORMANCE | EDUCATION | GOVERNANCE | COMMUNICATION

INDIANA SWIMMING BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING MINUTES OF THE MEETING – MAY 4, 2009 Location: Second Floor Conference Room (Pan Am Plaza Bldg) Time: 5:30pm

One of the other items in LEAP that I’ve been working on is a Policies & Procedures document. While this has been on a list of things to do for the BOD & me as staff, it’s just not been put into 1 document. With some help on pirating other’s formats, I have been working on copying/pasting some of our guidelines (registrations, meets, etc) into a Policies & Procedures document that is chapter outlined/formatted. While this document will be an ongoing tweak process (as our Championship meet entry letters seem to be), we’ll get a draft to the board in early May for us to expand upon (and critique/offer suggestions).

OLD MEET FILES The spring championship season proved to be busy again. I did find old meet results files/backups on the old times computer, just need to spend the time/hours to sitting at that computer to renaming and filing on to the server.

Updated the Championships Financial History file folders/spreadsheets. We occasionally get asked to see what the potential is for hosting different levels of our championship meets.

Also, purged old meet results post‐meet paperwork. With more and more teams scanning/emailing me their post‐meet paperwork, I have more actual file room. UPCOMING UNTIL JUNE MEEING • Office location. Not much more to report other than that option 2 is for ISC and of their “foster‐children” to stay in Pan Am, but receive new carpet & wall coverings or even new space all together. No decision or meetings or discussions on what they’ll do. Still very preliminary, but I believe that it might be the best option. Lucy and Arlene are still involved in the meetings and have the budget numbers as our rent would increase. We have the potential to also expand our space a bit if desired. • Work with Lucy on filing some annual property tax applications/forms. • Website re‐design and server file cleanup. • Championship Coordination meeting (5/13) prep work. • More office spring cleaning/purging to get ready for the potential move in January 2011.

SPECIAL EVENTS/PROJECTS

CLINICS Approximately 140 coaches from Indiana, and attended the two out of three regional coaching clinics hosted in Indiana on the April 24‐25 weekend. Out of 140 coaches attending 19 were from out of state. The target goal of coaches attending these clinics was 165 Indiana coaches which would surpass the number (164) that attended the ASCA Clinic in 2004.

Tom Avischious, Rick Bishop (Indianapolis) & Scott Colby (Crown Point) were the presenters and offered a great deal of practical information for coaches and clubs. A social each was held on following the Friday night to promote the sharing of ideas and development of relationships amongst the coaching staffs and programs.

Many thanks go to Crown Point Swim Club and Lawrence Swim Team for hosting these clinics.

Gail M. Dummer Donald H. Watkinds Michigan State University Peninsula Aquatics San Diego [email protected] [email protected]

Outline

„ Adapting stroke technique: disabilities At the end of the „ Adapting stroke technique: presentation, we principles invite you to share „ Teaching starts your expertise „ Using training equipment „ Ensuring swimmer safety

Introduction

„ Focus on instruction and coaching of advanced swimmers with disabilities

1 Adapting Stroke Technique

„ Disability-specific adaptations „ Hearing loss „ Vision loss „ Cognitive disabilities „ Dwarfism „ Amputations & limb deficiencies „ Spinal & lower limb conditions „ Cerebral palsy, stroke & head injury „ General principles „ Minimize drag „ Increase propulsion „ Improve physical fitness

Adapting Stroke Technique: Hearing Loss

„ Disability = usually no physical reason for stroke technique problems „ Stroke = inability to hear or understand coach instructions „ Hints = use written instructions, gestures, demonstrations, and sign language in addition to verbal directions

Adapting Stroke Technique: Vision Loss

„ Disability = poor/no vision + reluctance to move hands and arms away from torso „ Stroke „ Poor horizontal alignment (head too high/low) „ Poor lateral alignment (head not returned to neutral position after breathing) „ Inefficient stroke technique with tendency to have a short pull „ Stroke tends to deteriorate as swimmer approaches wall because swimmer fears collision

2 Adapting Stroke Technique: Vision Loss

„ Hints „ Move swimmer’s head and body through correct actions „ Teach movements on swim bench „ Use resistance training to help swimmer feel and experiment „ Use rich verbal descriptions „ Teach swimmer to count strokes + use tappers, sprinklers hanging from backstroke flags, etc. + use padding in swim cap

Adapting Stroke Technique: Cognitive Disabilities

„ Disability = usually no physical reason for stroke technique problems „ Multiple disability? „ Most with Down syndrome have short stature and hyperflexibility „ Stroke = poor understanding or memory of coach instructions

Adapting Stroke Technique: Cognitive Disabilities

„ Hints „ Simple 1 & 2 part directions „ Gradual introduction of new skills „ Frequent review of instruction „ ROUTINE! „ Repetition

3 Adapting Stroke Technique: Cognitive Disabilities

„ Kendall Bailey „ 2008 Paralympian SB9 100m brst „ American record SB9 100m brst 1:15.81

Kendall Bailey Class S10, SB9, SM10 Peninsula Aquatics San Diego

Adapting Stroke Technique: Dwarfism

„ Disability = short stature, short arms, short legs, spinal stenosis, possible hip contractures „ Stroke „ Form drag (especially legs) „ Limited ability to streamline „ Poor distance per stroke „ Poor body roll + short catch + wide pull + short finish + wide recovery „ Limited hip ROM „ Legs “go numb”

Adapting Stroke Technique: Dwarfism

„ Hints „ Improve streamline as much as possible (arms may not reach overhead) „ Increase stroke rate „ Maximize distance per pull with sculling movements „ Increase core strength to improve body roll „ Improve flexibility, especially of hip extensors

4 Adapting Stroke Technique: Dwarfism

Casey Johnson „ 2004 Paralympian bronze medal 4 x 50 free relay „ 2008 Paralympian 6th S6 50m butterfly 42.35 8th S6 100m freestyle 1:26.42 „ American record Casey Johnson S6 100m butterfly 1:50.14 Class S6, SB6, SM6 Irvine Novaquatics

Adapting Stroke Technique: Dwarfism

Adapting Stroke Technique: Amputations and Limb Deficiencies

„ Disability – loss of all or part of arm(s) or leg(s) „ Stroke (depends on site of amputation) „ Asymmetrical, unbalanced stroke „ Compromised body roll in long-axis strokes „ Possible difficulty streamlining „ Limited propulsion/sculling with arm amputation „ Limited propulsion from kick with leg amputation „ Excessive drag with double-leg amputation

5 Adapting Stroke Technique: Amputations and Limb Deficiencies

Hints „ Increase core strength to help body roll „ Swim against stretch cords to identify asymmetries and gaps in propulsion „ Single-leg amputees - Center kick behind body instead of same-side hip. Experiment with kicking patterns. „ Double-leg amputees - Experiment with ways to kick with stumps. Experiment with effect of head position on body position. „ Arm amputees - Use paddle-wheel motions, stressing arm pressure against water + use faster stroke rate.

Adapting Stroke Technique: Amputations and Limb Deficiencies

Roy Perkins „ 2008 Paralympian 1st 50m fly 35.95 3rd 100m free 1:15.31 4th 50m free 34.61 4th 200m free 2:46.68 5th 200m IM 3:23.63 Roy Perkins „ World records Class , SM5 S5 50m fly 35.95 Peninsula Aquatics San Diego S5 100m fly 1:27.11 „ American records Free * Back * Brst * Fly 15 long course records

Adapting Stroke Technique: Spinal & Lower Limb Conditions

„ Disability – paraplegia „ Limited leg function and mobility „ Hip, knee, and ankle contractures „ Possible asymmetries in muscle tone because of wheelchair use (propulsion muscles stronger) „ Disability – quadriplegia „ Paraplegia limitations plus … „ Limited hand function „ Limited arm and trunk strength and mobility „ Other disabilities – muscular dystrophies, ataxias, osteogenesis imperfecta, arthrogryposis, polio, etc.

6 Adapting Stroke Technique: Spinal & Lower Limb Conditions

„ Stroke –problems depend upon level of SCI „ Poor hand shape/pitch „ Poor feel for the water „ Poor streamline „ Hips/legs drag + little or no propulsion from kick „ Poor body roll + short catch + wide pull + short finish + wide recovery + early breathing

Adapting Stroke Technique: Spinal & Lower Limb Conditions

„ Hints „ Strengthen affected muscles if possible – core strength helps hold hips/legs near surface and facilitate body roll „ Emphasize the best possible body and limb positions (e.g., forearm pulling when hands are weak) „ Emphasize sculling movements for DPS „ Breathe at end of same side pull „ Encourage kicking if possible „ Use ROM, relaxation, and PT exercises to minimize contractures when possible

Adapting Stroke Technique: Cerebral Palsy, Stroke, & Head Injury

Disability – spastic CP, stroke & head injury „ Poor coordination „ Adduction and inward rotation in affected limbs + flexion in arms + extension in legs „ Hemiplegia affects ½ (right/left side) of body „ Diplegia affects legs more than arms/trunk „ Contractures + range of motion limitations „ Persistent postural reflexes Disability – athetosis „ Poor coordination „ Unwanted, purposeless movements „ Range of motion limitations

7 Adapting Stroke Technique: Cerebral Palsy, Stroke, & Head Injury

Stroke „ Poor hand shape/pitch „ Poor feel for the water „ Poor streamline „ Hips/legs drag + little or no propulsion from kick „ Poor body roll + short catch + wide pull + short finish + wide recovery + early breathing

Adapting Stroke Technique: Cerebral Palsy, Stroke, & Head Injury

„ Hints „ Use resistance training in and out of water (hand paddles, fins, stretch cords, etc.) „ Use extensive repetition „ Use range of motion exercises, relaxation, imagery, and physical therapy interventions to minimize contractures and unwanted muscle tone „ If action causes more drag than propulsion, consider not using that body part(s) „ Increase core strength to hold hips/legs at surface „ Encourage kicking if possible „ Try different head positions to improve body position

Adapting Stroke Technique: Cerebral Palsy, Stroke, & Head Injury

Michael DeMarco (back) „ 2004 Paralympian 3rd 50m brst 1:03.20 „ 2008 Paralympian 7th 50m freestyle 1:00.69 7th 100m freestyle 2:07.72 8th 50m backstroke 1:03.03 „ American records 13 long course records

Nate Tauzer, Class S9, SB8, SM9 Peninsula Aquatics San Diego

Adapting Stroke Technique: Principle #1: Minimize Drag

„ Drag refers to water forces that cause the swimmer to slow down

„ D = drag „ Cd = coefficient of drag „ A = cross-sectional area „ V = velocity „ The swimmer has the most control over A and V

Cd expresses the relationship between the swimmer’s body shape and the flow/viscosity of the water

Adapting Stroke Technique: Principle #1: Minimize Drag

Minimize drag „ Good streamline „ Good horizontal alignment „ Good lateral alignment „ Good shoulder roll

Also „ Tight-fitting swim suits and swim caps „ Shave uncovered body parts „ Swim in “fast” uncrowded pools

9 Adapting Stroke Technique: Principle #2: Increase Propulsion

„ Maximize propulsive surface „ Arms/hands and legs/feet in optimal positions „ Many books and videos describe effective stroke techniques „ Scull „ Press against water with hands and forearms „ Hand pitch/angle of attack of about 40o „ Downward, upward, outward, inward „ Steady pressure on the water

Adapting Stroke Technique: Principle #3: Improve Physical Fitness

Strength & Helps create propulsion – also core endurance strength helps body roll, ability to transfer forces from one side of body to the other, maintain good horizontal/lateral alignment Range of motion Flexibility helps the swimmer to execute stroke techniques Body composition Excessive body size increases drag Cardiorespiratory Helps swimmer to maintain stroke fitness technique over desired distance

Teaching Starts: Teaching Forward Starts

„ At least one foot at front of platform, toes over edge „ Fingers pull on platform to initiate dive „ Push-off forcefully with both legs „ Reach forward „ Entry – hands then head, shoulder, hips, and legs „ Level-off and start swimming

10 Teaching Starts: Teaching Forward Starts

Teaching Starts: Teaching Backstroke Starts

„ Start with feet submerged and at least one hand on wall „ Push-off „ Swing arms back and sideways „ Chin down on blocks, chin up during flight „ Push with legs, arch back to lift hips „ Streamline at water entry, then kick, then swim

Teaching Starts: Teaching Backstroke Starts

11 Teaching Starts: Teaching Assisted Starts

„ Hold hand if swimmer is capable of some push-off with feet „ Otherwise hold feet to wall

Teaching Starts: Disability Modifications

Swimming rules permit a variety of starting positions for the forward start (e.g., standing, kneeling, sitting) on the starting block, on the deck, or in the water

Teaching Starts: Disability Modifications

Hold hand if swimmer is capable of some push-off with feet. Otherwise hold feet to wall.

12 Teaching Starts: Disability Modifications

„ The three most common causes of injury in competitive swimming are: „ Unsupervised horseplay „ Training injuries, e.g.,

„ Collisions with other swimmers, lane lines, etc.

„ Overuse injuries „ Slippery surfaces

Ensuring Swimmer Safety: Seizures

Out of the Water In the Water „ Protect from injury „ Support in water „ Cushion the head „ Face above water surface with airway open „ Nothing in mouth „ Remove person from water „ Do not restrain ASAP (backboard?) „ Place in recovery position „ Stay with person „ Call EMS if lengthy or repeated seizures

14 Ensuring Swimmer Safety: Atlantoaxial Instability (AAI)

„ What is AAI? „ Excess space between 1st and 2nd cervical vertebrae „ Spinal cord may be injured if person forcefully flexes or extends the neck „ Who has AAI? „ About 15% of persons with Down syndrome „ Assessed by X-ray „ Special Olympics policy „ No butterfly „ No diving © Fotosearch.com

Ensuring Swimmer Safety: Other Disability-Related Concerns

„ Lack of sensation – wear swim shoes/protective clothing „ Poor balance or poor vision – keep pool decks dry and uncluttered „ Diabetes – allow water and snacks „ Shunts – avoid diving, swimming underwater, and blows to the head „ Hypothermia – limit time in cold water or use wet suit/vest during practice + after swimming use towels, blankets, and warm showers to help swimmer get warm „ Sun sensitivity – wear rash shirts and use sunscreen „ Other concerns?

Ensuring Swimmer Safety: Emergency Action Plan

„ Prevent accidents Know the emergency „ Keep deck clean and dry action plan for every „ Lifeguard on duty swimming pool that „ Lock doors when pool is closed you use! „ Evacuation plan „ Injuries or accidents „ Fire or weather emergencies „ Accommodate disabilities „ Chain of command „ Who calls EMS? Phone number? „ Who helps the injured person? „ Who supervises other swimmers?

15 Ensuring Swimmer Safety: Teacher/Coach Responsibilities

„ Check pool for hazards „ Supervise swimmers for safety – even if a lifeguard is present „ Teach swimmers to be safe „ Know your swimmers „ Motivation „ Health problems „ Equipment needs „ Train your assistants „ Maintain CPR & FA certifications
