(ET) Members of the U.S. Paralympic Track & Field Team at the team naming ceremony in Charlotte, North Carolina CHARLOTTE, N.C. – U.S. Paralympics, a division of the United States Olympic Committee, announced today the 66 athletes who will represent Team USA in track & field at the 2016 Paralympic Games. The 40 men and 26 women on the roster, in addition to three guides for visually impaired athletes, will compete in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from September 7-18. Tatyana McFadden (Clarksville, Maryland) is one of the athletes headlining the U.S. team in Rio de Janeiro. The five- time Paralympian and 11-time Paralympic medalist is aiming to become the first athlete to sweep every distance from the 100-meter to the marathon at the Paralympic Games with seven events. Highlighting the men’s side is Ray Martin (Jersey City, New Jersey) who emerged as the most decorated U.S. man on the track at the London 2012 Paralympic Games, winning gold in all four events he competed in. Returning to the roster for Rio are 14 medalists from the London Games, including Paralympic champions Jeremy Campbell (Perryton, Texas) in men’s discus F44 and Shirley Reilly (Tucson, Arizona) in the women’s marathon T54. Team USA won nine gold, six silver and 13 bronze for a total of 28 medals in London. Two athletes will be representing the United States in two sports as Allyssa Seely (Glendale, Arizona) and Grace Norman (Jamestown, Ohio) were nominated to the U.S.

In 1952, the Netherlands joined the competition and an international movement was born. The very first Olympic style Games for athletes with a disability were organized in Rome in 1960. In Toronto in 1976, other disability groups, other than spinal cord injuries, were added and the idea of merging various disability groups for international sport competitions began. In the same year, the first Paralympic Winter Games took place in Sweden. Today, the Paralympics are elite sport events for athletes from six different disability groups.

All Western Zone LSCs were represented. Elected and appointed officers present: Brandon Drawz, Senior Zone Director; Robert Broyles, Junior Zone Director; Jon Hayashida, Swimming Championship Coordinator; Marilyn Loitz, Secretary/Treasurer; Eugene Mielke, Disability Swimming Coordinator. A moment of silence was observed in remembrance of Western Zone members who have passed this year. Introductions and recognitions made during the meeting: USA-S President Bruce Stratton; USA-S Past President Ron Van Pool; USA-S Vice Presidents and candidates for office Mary Jo Swalley (Administration), Jeff Gudman (Program Development), Dave Berkoff (Technical), Jim Sheehan (Program Operations); Past Western Zone Directors Mike Saltzstein, John Kinney, Larry Johnson, Vicki Marsh; Jeri Marshburn, Olympic Team Assistant Manager; Deb Keane, Meet Director for Olympic Trials; USA-S Treasurer candidates Stu Hixon and John Erter; Athletes’ Executive Committee candidate April Robinson. Executive Director Chuck Wielgus praised Bruce as an awesome President in many different capacities and roles. He introduced Frank Busch, National Team Director, as a person of impeccable character whose leadership has had a lot to do with the success of our team in London. Frank gave a brief talk which included our successes this year at the Olympics, the impact of Western Zone swimmers at that and the National level and the importance of working at the grass roots level and building character.     GoGirlGo! Curriculum Adapting the Curriculum for Girls with Disabilities With a little advance planning, the GoGirlGo! curriculum can be adapted for girls with various disabilities. Here are some general suggestions. For example, if your girls are running or walking outside, make sure a paved pathway with curb cuts is available for individuals with physical disabilities. Many individuals with disabilities know what they can do, but just want to be included in activities. If an individual with a disability is in the group, ask her what she can do and adapt the exercises for her. Adaptations to activities that require standing, running or walking Blind or visually impaired: Tether girl to a seeing individual or have her hold someone’s elbow. Wheelchair: The girl should be encouraged to push herself. If the girl with a disability is unable to push herself, ask her if she would like to be pushed. For example, a girl in a wheelchair may lean to the left, back to the middle, and lean to the right in a wheelchair rather than doing it while standing. She may do a version of jumping jacks that uses only the arms, or instead of sit-ups, she might lift a book over her head and then back down (something weighted) while she is frozen during a game of “Green Light Red Light”. Deaf or hearing impaired: Use hand gestures when you want the group to stop, go, etc. Make sure there is an interpreter if possible. Adaptations to GoGirlGo!
