2016 MOCSEM Board of Directors The Boss' Corner

By Mike Rey

MOCSEM President President Mike Rey [email protected] One, Big Mustang Family! 313.304.5244 I have had this mindset since Day One – all of our Mustang and Ford vehicle clubs are really just one, big Vice President family. I have really been trying to work with many of Jennifer Smith our other reginal clubs on joint ventures whenever we [email protected] 734.755.8250 can, and we have had success doing just that, whether it’s helping with judging at each other’s shows, co- Treasurer promotion of events or simply supporting each other’s Rich Kocan activities. I really stressed the point of working together [email protected] with the other clubs in our area this year at our yearly 248.349.2114 planning summit, which included an invitation to nearly every Mustang club in our region (and most had Secretary attended). Well, we’ve recently seen what working Lisa Sielski together can do! On April 17 in Dearborn, after working [email protected] 734.560.8343 with Steve White and the SAAC-MCR, we pulled off something amazing: Almost 100 cars attended a one- day get-together to celebrate National Mustang Day Membership and get our events season into gear. I'm really sad I Sarah Cassette [email protected] had to miss this event because a work assignment had 734.770.0085 me attending a Ford event in California. But I heard that the turnout and enthusiasm was great! It all started at the Ford WHQ for a photo-op and meet-&-greet, then it Social Director was off to lifetime MOCSEM Member Mike Berardi’s Jeff Beyar personal Mustang collection for a tour and lunch, then [email protected] 313.310.1720 the last stop was out at Ford’s Flat Rock Assembly Plant for a final photo-op where all new Mustangs are born! This kind of cooperation is just the start of what I Merchandise would like to see in the coming years among the clubs. Member Jim Baldwin Wins MOCSEM Drawing to Attend Ford Performance Driving School & Has Time of His Life!

I was apprehensive at first, and even after I hooked up with MOCSEM president Mike Rey and got the Ford Racing certificate from him, I was still having my doubts: Should a 66-year-old fella try this?

Everyone I talked to said to go for it, and the support was strong. My brother encouraged me to go, and to register for the Two-Day school program, saying that I might not get the chance to repeat this. My wife, Darlene, encouraged me to try this and even said she would travel west with me.

By Jim Baldwin I was getting excited but I wondered – could I compete with the other drivers at the school? I was excited now . . . but why did they have turns that were banked in the wrong direction?

I must say Thank You to all the instructors at the driving school for their patience and advice. Their help made this both a safe and a very enjoyable experience. Yes, over the roar of the exhaust and the tires we could hear them . . . if only I could remember my car number. Oh yes, it was on the dashboard in front of me! I had to turn off ZZ Top for now and listen to their instructions.

I learned what all the flags meant as well. Not intentionally, but mostly because they kept waving colored flags at me. I learned how to wave a car past me, and learned to keep my line regardless of who was behind me. This was a blast!

We spent an hour out on the track and then 40 minutes or so back in the classroom, back and forth for the rest of the day. This was fun!

I learned that I had to tailgate to be competitive. That was hard to do after all these years of learning to allow The thing I really appreciated was that with no ill-regard plenty of room between you and the car ahead of you for my endless questions they always took the time to on the road. So I tried to follow her around the track . . . but that idea lasted only for the first turn, because after she blasted through it, I accelerated out and she was nowhere to be seen!

I learned to look ahead into each turn – much further ahead than I had ever done while driving, and now I still do that while driving on the street. Thank you, Cyndi, and all the other instructors for doing such a great job!

After a great second day on the Utah track I was really exhausted. We went back to the classroom after the final laps and we all shared – as we had done each time before – the many things that we learned out on the track.
