Bennett) This project – the first in-depth analysis of clerical concubinage in medieval England – examines cultural perceptions of clerical sexual misbehavior as well as the lived experiences of priests, concubines, and their children. Although much has been written on the imposition of priestly celibacy during the Gregorian Reform and on its rejection during the Reformation, the history of clerical concubinage between these two watersheds has remained largely unstudied. My analysis is based primarily on archival records from Hereford, a diocese in the West Midlands that incorporated both English- and Welsh-speaking parishes and combines the quantitative analysis of documentary evidence with a close reading of pastoral and popular literature. Drawing on an episcopal visitation from 1397, the act books of the consistory court, and bishops’ registers, I argue that clerical concubinage occurred as frequently in England as elsewhere in late medieval Europe and that priests and their concubines were, to some extent, socially and culturally accepted in late medieval England. -

The process by which people are chosen for particular roles is one of the most important and sensitive in all institutions. The Church of England has, for many years, invested significantly in well resourced and nationally agreed arrangements for discerning the vocation of those called to ordained ministry. But, for a variety of reasons the Church of England has traditionally found it much more difficult to reflect nationally on the processes which come later, once someone is due to be considered for a parochial clergy appointment. 2. There have been a number of reasons for this reticence. The most obvious is the sheer fragmentation of responsibility for making appointments in a church with some 13,000 parishes. The Church of England is not a legal entity and is made up of many different bodies; in many ways it has more the qualities of an organism than an organization. 3. In addition, the patronage system, though much reformed over the years, has continued to make the practical operation of parochial appointments within the Church of England more complex than in many other institutions. In the appointment of incumbents, it remains the patron who has the right of initiative, though an appointment cannot proceed without the consent both of the bishop and of the two parochial representatives. -

10 Geology, Soils and Contaminated Land
Visual Impact Provision (VIP), Snowdonia Project, Environmental Appraisal Volume 1 10 GEOLOGY, SOILS AND CONTAMINATED LAND 10.1 Introduction 10.1.1 This Chapter of the Environmental Appraisal identifies the potential impacts of the Proposed Project on geology, soils and contaminated land as well as the potential impacts of the geology, soils and contaminated land on the Proposed Project. 10.1.2 With respect to contaminated land, the appraisal explores potential effects on human health, controlled waters (groundwater and surface water), property and the environment from the presence or mobilisation of existing contaminants, or from accidental release of contaminants during the construction, operational or decommissioning phases of the Proposed Project. 10.1.3 Potential effects on geology, soils and contaminated land are interrelated with effects on surface water and land use. This Chapter should be read in conjunction with Chapter 2: Project Description, Chapter 6: Landscape and Visual, Chapter 7: Ecology, Chapter 8: Archaeology and Cultural Heritage, Chapter 9: Water Resources and Chapter 11: Agriculture and Land Use, of this Environmental Appraisal. Chapter 9 discusses the potential for the Proposed Project to impact nearby surface waters; whereas this Chapter (10) discusses the potential for the Proposed Project to impact groundwater and discusses surface waters only where they may be impacted via a groundwater pathway. 10.2 Scope and Methodology The Study Area 10.2.1 For the purposes of this appraisal the following terms of reference are used and shown on Figure 10.1: • Study Area for Permanent and Temporary Works – used for the basis of the Study Area for the purposes of baseline data collection. -

Traeth Mawr Viaduct gets £1.85m investment to improve resilience on Cambrian Line February 12, 2021 Network Rail is helping to improve the resilience of the Cambrian Line with a £1.85m project to restore Traeth Mawr Viaduct with work due to begin Saturday 13 February. Engineers will replace timbers on the rail over river viaduct during a nine-day closure of the Cambrian Line from 13 to 21 of February. Transport for Wales will be running rail replacement services during the work and those who need to travel are advised to plan ahead and allow additional time. Network Rail is carrying out a number of projects on the Cambrian Line to improve resilience, including the £25m restoration of Barmouth Viaduct. Bill Kelly, route director for Network Rail Wales and Borders, said: “2021 is an exciting year for investment in the Cambrian Line. We will shortly begin refurbishing Traeth Mawr Viaduct, which connects Porthmadog and Minffordd. “Our £1.85m project to replace timber elements on the viaduct will allow us to continue providing a safe, reliable and resilient railway for many years to come. “This project can help to prevent future periods of unplanned work, minimising disruption for passengers and reducing maintenance costs to the taxpayer.“ James Price, Transport for Wales CEO, said: “It’s great to see Network Rail continuing to make progress in restoring historic structures on the Cambrian Coast Line and safeguarding its future, following Network Rail’s ongoing work to restore Barmouth Bridge. This investment sits alongside our own investment in transforming services throughout the Wales and Borders network, including brand new trains for the Cambrian Coast Line in the years to come.
