Botryosphaeria infections in New Zealand grapevine nurseries: Sources of inoculum and infection pathways A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Plant Pathology by Regina Billones-Baaijens Lincoln University 2011 Abstract of a thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Plant Pathology Abstract Botryosphaeria infections in New Zealand grapevine nurseries: Inoculum sources and infection pathways by Regina Billones-Baaijens The botryosphaeriaceous fungi can cause decline, dieback and death of grapevines. Anecdotal evidence has indicated that these pathogens might be present in the young vines sold by propagation nurseries, so this study investigated their role in spread of this disease. Sampling of grapevine nurseries across New Zealand showed that botryosphaeriaceous infections were present in eight out of nine nurseries with infection incidence ranging from 5 to 63%. Of the 311 propagation materials and plants received, 23% were positive for botryosphaeriaceous infection, with a total of 120 isolates recovered.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE August 21, 2020 Media Contact: Brantley Ussery Director of Marketing & Public Relations [email protected] 434.953.0005 MONTICELLO AMERICAN VITICULTURAL AREA PLACES IN TOP 10 OF USA TODAY 10BEST READERS’ CHOICE AWARDS CONTEST Twenty wine regions around the country were nominated and the Monticello AVA is one of only two winners on the East Coast CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – The Charlottesville Albemarle Convention and Visitors Bureau (CACVB) is excited to announce the Monticello American Viticultural Area (AVA) has placed sixth in the USA Today 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards contest. Twenty wine regions across the country were nominated by a panel of experts, followed by a period of public voting lasting several weeks. The Monticello AVA is one of only two wine regions located on the East Coast to place in the top 10. The history of wine in the Charlottesville area dates to the days of Founding Father and third President of the United States Thomas Jefferson, who envisioned the region’s climate and soil to be ideal for grape growing. Though his experiments with growing grapevines were generally not successful, hundreds of years later the area would blossom into one of the most thriving wine regions in the country and has even been dubbed one of the “Top Wine Destinations in the World” by Wine Enthusiast. The Charlottesville area is home to the Monticello Wine Trail, featuring nearly 40 wineries located throughout the heart of Central Virginia. Several of these wineries have received accolades at the state, national and global levels and many have unique stories to tell.

  • Check out Wine Country in Oregon, Colorado, Virginia and Pennsylvania
6/24/2021 Wine country outside of California: Colorado, Virginia, Oregon, more DESTINATIONS Beyond Sonoma: Check out wine country in Oregon, Colorado, Virginia and Pennsylvania Erica Lamberg Special to USA TODAY Published 7:01 a.m. ET Jun. 23, 2021 Although you may be physically ready to travel again after getting vaccinated, you may not feel entirely ready – or comfortable – enough yet to visit touristy destinations along with peak-season crowds. If you’re an experienced wine enthusiast or just an aspiring collector hoping to grow your at-home wine collection but aren't ready for crowds yet, the answer may be visiting a lesser-known wine region. Just keep in mind your wine-tasting and winery visits may be different that you’re used to. But that can be a good thing. "The wine tasting experience has become more consumer focused and intimate, with smaller groups of people at each tasting and reservations now being required,” says Kim Pasquali, the head of guest experiences at Medlock Ames, a wine producer and tasting room located about an hour northwest of Sonoma, California. “With these smaller group tastings, wineries have the opportunity to offer more one-on- one time with each guest, making the wine-tasting experience more in-depth and tailored to their interests and knowledge.” Despite loosening COVID restrictions across the country, Pasquali believes that the trends of wineries offering seated tastings and requiring reservations will continue. Why? Purveyors have come to appreciate the way those practices have organized the flow of consumers to their tasting rooms. https://www.usatoday.com/story/travel/destinations/2021/06/23/wine-country-outside-california-colorado-virginia-oregon-pennsylvania/5304056001/ 1/5 6/24/2021 Wine country outside of California: Colorado, Virginia, Oregon, more “Wineries are beginning to offer tasting events again, which will give guests the option to attend some larger gatherings that were so crucial to the atmosphere of Wine Country,” Pasquali says.

  • Descriptive Analysis and Consumer Study of Viognier Wines from Virginia, France and California
Descriptive Analysis and Consumer Study of Viognier Wines from Virginia, France and California Martha Wicks Mueller, Gregory Hirson, Maya Hood White, Jonas Mueller, and Hildegarde Heymann Abstract: A trained panel (n=12) identified the key characteristics of Viognier wines from Virginia, France, and California. Fourteen aroma attributes were identified and assessed: Artificial fruit, chemical, citrus, earthy/dusty/musty, floral, green apple, hay, honey, hot (ethanol), melon/cucumber, stone fruit, sulfidic, tropical fruit, woody, yeasty, and overall product intensity. Six taste and mouth feel attributes were measured: astringent, bitter, hot (ethanol), sour, sweet, and viscosity. Principal component analysis and analysis of variance were used to describe and differentiate among wines and countries. Overall product intensity, artificial fruit, honey, hot, stone fruit, sulfidic, tropical fruit, viscosity, sweet, sour, astringent and hot mouthfeel were all found be significant across wines. When analyzing product versus region, wines from California were found to be significantly greater in overall intensity, stone fruit, artificial fruit and tropical fruit than wines from Virginia and France. French Viogniers were found to be significantly greater in woody than Virginian or Californian Viogniers. Consumer studies in Virginia (n=193) and California (n=109) found a preference for wines high in fruit intensities and higher residual sugar and acidity. Introduction: The European wine grape variety Viognier was on the brink of extinction some forty years ago. The variety had dwindled to only 20 acres in its home, the Northern Rhone Valley, during the late 1960's. It was rediscovered in the ‘New World’ with plantings in Virginia and California in the early 1980’s.
