Botryosphaeria infections in New Zealand grapevine nurseries: Sources of inoculum and infection pathways A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Plant Pathology by Regina Billones-Baaijens Lincoln University 2011 Abstract of a thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Plant Pathology Abstract Botryosphaeria infections in New Zealand grapevine nurseries: Inoculum sources and infection pathways by Regina Billones-Baaijens The botryosphaeriaceous fungi can cause decline, dieback and death of grapevines. Anecdotal evidence has indicated that these pathogens might be present in the young vines sold by propagation nurseries, so this study investigated their role in spread of this disease. Sampling of grapevine nurseries across New Zealand showed that botryosphaeriaceous infections were present in eight out of nine nurseries with infection incidence ranging from 5 to 63%. Of the 311 propagation materials and plants received, 23% were positive for botryosphaeriaceous infection, with a total of 120 isolates recovered. -

The BIG Night In Love and Life, One BIG Night Can Change Everything AUCTION CATALOG 2019 Because of you, One big night Changed everything Dear Friends Welcome to our 8th annual The BIG Night. We gather in celebration and support of the more than 3,000 children and youth enrolled and participating in the Boys & Girls Clubs of St. Helena and Calistoga in our St. Helena Clubhouse, St. Helena Teen Center, Calistoga Clubhouse, Calistoga Teen Center and the Howell Mountain School Site. We offer our heartfelt gratitude to our hosts and sponsors, the Trinchero Family, Trinchero Family Estates, our BIG Night chairs Bob Torres and Marianna Hawkins, and the many Board members, patrons, donors, volunteers, vintners, and staff members who have made this event possible. Since the last BIG Night- and with over one million raised, boy was last year BIG- we have taken our teens on over 10 different college tour trips, brought kids interested in space and science from all of our units to NASA Space Camp in Alabama, remodeled our outdated tech lab in St. Helena into a STEM Lab, expanded our Healthy Habits nutrition program across all sites, bought two brand new vans for trips, began boxing and fitness classes for our teens, increased funding for our art programs, brought in world-class musicians and music classes, partnered with health services to provide counseling for the kids who need us the most, and more. We take seriously your trust and support. We work tirelessly to make sure the funds we raise are spent wisely. We can only do what we do because of your support at The BIG Night. -
Monticello American Viticultural Area Places In
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE August 21, 2020 Media Contact: Brantley Ussery Director of Marketing & Public Relations [email protected] 434.953.0005 MONTICELLO AMERICAN VITICULTURAL AREA PLACES IN TOP 10 OF USA TODAY 10BEST READERS’ CHOICE AWARDS CONTEST Twenty wine regions around the country were nominated and the Monticello AVA is one of only two winners on the East Coast CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – The Charlottesville Albemarle Convention and Visitors Bureau (CACVB) is excited to announce the Monticello American Viticultural Area (AVA) has placed sixth in the USA Today 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards contest. Twenty wine regions across the country were nominated by a panel of experts, followed by a period of public voting lasting several weeks. The Monticello AVA is one of only two wine regions located on the East Coast to place in the top 10. The history of wine in the Charlottesville area dates to the days of Founding Father and third President of the United States Thomas Jefferson, who envisioned the region’s climate and soil to be ideal for grape growing. Though his experiments with growing grapevines were generally not successful, hundreds of years later the area would blossom into one of the most thriving wine regions in the country and has even been dubbed one of the “Top Wine Destinations in the World” by Wine Enthusiast. The Charlottesville area is home to the Monticello Wine Trail, featuring nearly 40 wineries located throughout the heart of Central Virginia. Several of these wineries have received accolades at the state, national and global levels and many have unique stories to tell. -
A Guide to Napa Valley Cult Wineries
HOME A Guide to Napa Valley Cult Wineries DRINK by WC STAFF on DECEMBER 22, 2015 34307 1 Made in small quantities and often sold for high prices, cult wines often earn high scores from top wine wine critics— Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate and Wine Spectator. Many are made by famous “flying winemakers” (consulting winemakers who fly around the world making wine for top estates), although some are simply families who have farmed the land long enough to know how to draw the best out of it. Napa Valley has one of the highest concentrations of cult wines in the world, so we’ve laid out a list of some of the top Napa Valley cult wines, including both the established legends and the rising stars. The wines are almost always Cabernet Sauvignon—this is Napa Valley, after all—and are complex, densely structured, and absolutely beautiful to experience. Now if we could just get on that allocation list… The Legends Image Source: Harlan Estate Harlan Estate and BOND Estates Visit: Appointments may be available for members Founder Bill Harlan spares no expense to create these Napa Valley cult classics. Harlan comes from estate vineyards in the Oakville hills and has earned five 100 point scores from Robert Parker between 1994 and 2007. On the other side of the same coin, BOND aims to highlight the best terroir in Napa Valley with six wines created from six distinct single-vineyard sites. These wines are also Parker darlings; four 100 points scores from Robert Parker since 2000. The wines from both wineries are exquisite examples of Napa Valley at its best. -
Check out Wine Country in Oregon, Colorado, Virginia and Pennsylvania
6/24/2021 Wine country outside of California: Colorado, Virginia, Oregon, more DESTINATIONS Beyond Sonoma: Check out wine country in Oregon, Colorado, Virginia and Pennsylvania Erica Lamberg Special to USA TODAY Published 7:01 a.m. ET Jun. 23, 2021 Although you may be physically ready to travel again after getting vaccinated, you may not feel entirely ready – or comfortable – enough yet to visit touristy destinations along with peak-season crowds. If you’re an experienced wine enthusiast or just an aspiring collector hoping to grow your at-home wine collection but aren't ready for crowds yet, the answer may be visiting a lesser-known wine region. Just keep in mind your wine-tasting and winery visits may be different that you’re used to. But that can be a good thing. "The wine tasting experience has become more consumer focused and intimate, with smaller groups of people at each tasting and reservations now being required,” says Kim Pasquali, the head of guest experiences at Medlock Ames, a wine producer and tasting room located about an hour northwest of Sonoma, California. “With these smaller group tastings, wineries have the opportunity to offer more one-on- one time with each guest, making the wine-tasting experience more in-depth and tailored to their interests and knowledge.” Despite loosening COVID restrictions across the country, Pasquali believes that the trends of wineries offering seated tastings and requiring reservations will continue. Why? Purveyors have come to appreciate the way those practices have organized the flow of consumers to their tasting rooms. https://www.usatoday.com/story/travel/destinations/2021/06/23/wine-country-outside-california-colorado-virginia-oregon-pennsylvania/5304056001/ 1/5 6/24/2021 Wine country outside of California: Colorado, Virginia, Oregon, more “Wineries are beginning to offer tasting events again, which will give guests the option to attend some larger gatherings that were so crucial to the atmosphere of Wine Country,” Pasquali says. -
